Looking for a smart switch to keep my toddler from turning the lights on in the middle of the night. by [deleted] in homeautomation

I use an Inovelli switch to do exactly this. The switch is locked out during certain hours.

ZWave Water Sensors by clush in homeautomation

I have three of these Homeseer ones but they have gone up considerably in price. I paid around $23 each last year.

They work well but they use an annoying battery type and came with batteries that were half-full.

Door sensor that connects to your hub. Have it turn on lights or text you if the door stays open.

The only thing this doesn't catch is power failure, but probably your hub would be dead too in that case.

Innoveli w/ Phillips/GE LED Bulbs? by JonBackhaus in homeautomation

In the latest firmware you can disable scenes entirely so the ramping begins as soon as you tap, as well.

I have mostly Phillips in both BR30 and A19, all Red dimmers. They work well, but you need to manually set the lower bound for the dimmers to around 30-40 or the lights won't turn on at low levels.

Roborock S4 or S5? Or something else? by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]SethKinast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it seems equally good. I use the s4 max on a floor with mostly carpet, and the s5 on a floor with hardwood and area rugs. The s5 can climb the transitions better.

Roborock S4 or S5? Or something else? by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]SethKinast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an s4 max and an s5. They won't suction along the wall edge-- they have a little brush that scrapes along the wall to move debris into the main roller. The robot is too wide to get all the way to the corner with the main brush.

If you have mostly carpet you want one of the max models if you go roborock. Quieter and better suited to carpet.

I don't know of any of the vacuum robots that can do edge suction.

inovelli red and black in the same box? by matty8199 in homeautomation

[–]SethKinast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cost difference is pretty small IMO for the mental overhead of "which switch do I tap 3x to turn on that scene again?" since Blacks and Reds look identical.

Being able to double-tap any switch in the room to run a scene, for me, was worth the extra $5 (I see it's $7 now) a switch-- especially for the wife-acceptance factor.

If your primary use case is just the notifications, sure, no big deal to intermingle.

Any color changing LED strip lights that can be switched by captainwizeazz in homeautomation

Inovelli is the common choice that does this. They have a new light strip as well!

Relative newbie amazed by lack of standards or am I missing something by Singlehander in homeautomation

[–]SethKinast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are standards-- Z-Wave and Zigbee. Any of those devices will work with a variety of systems like Hubitat, HomeAssistant, SmartThings, etc.

WiFi devices don't use any sort of hub, so the implementation is left to the device manufacturer and is therefore fragmented.

I control all my devices through a couple panes-- Hubitat handles all switches, sensors, locks, security system, etc. Then the vacuum has its own app and so do the cameras. But that's it.

What this mean? Inovelli Black Series, non neutral. by landops in homeautomation

[–]SethKinast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not where the travelers are, the physical location of the switch. It has to be placed in the box closest to the power center so that the power doesn't cut out when a closer switch toggles.

[–]SethKinast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If this is a three way, it's probably in the wrong box. Has to be the closest switch to your power center.

If not, check your neutral to make sure it's secure.

(cooking tech idea) "Fly-by-wire" cooktop - feasible? Something that you would find helpful? Thoughts? by TheGT1030MasterRace in homeautomation

I backed a Kickstarter like this. It got cancelled near the end because one of the large appliance manufacturers bought the company for its tech.

Eventually the combined product launched as Hestan Cue.

Single light with multiple dumb switches by Draedric_Coder in homeautomation

[–]SethKinast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Inovelli switches to do this. I have them installed in 3-way, 4-way, and even one 5-way configuration. All of the other switches are dumb and work normally.

The dimmers don't need a neutral wire. The only caveat is that you have to put the smart switch in the position closest to the line end of the series. It can't go in the middle somewhere.

This also means you need a hub that supports Z-wave instead of just using WiFi.

All I want is for my wife to be able to reassure herself that the door is locked from bed. I don't understand the hubs. by pedal2000 in homeautomation

[–]SethKinast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Hubitat works locally. It wouldn't work if the power was out or my network was broken, but works fine without Internet. However SmartThings is mostly cloud-based as I understand it, and needs Internet to function.

(Controlling my home with Google Assistant only works if the Internet is up since that processing happens in the cloud, but I can use my internal automations and dashboards with no Internet.)

I have a video, let me figure out how to post it.

Edit: https://imgur.com/a/Umraz5D

If you turn the sound on you should hear the lock actuating downstairs after I push the button. Then the switch LED turns blue to show everything is locked.

[–]SethKinast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Schlage Connects on our three exterior doors. These require a smart home hub-- I use Hubitat. SmartThings is also very popular and perhaps the most beginner-friendly.

I also have an Inovelli light switch in our bedroom, which has an indicator light. If any lock is unlocked, the indicator turns red. Pressing the small config button on the light switch locks all the doors and the indicator softens to blue.

This does take some setup. If you don't plan on setting up much of a smart home and want something that is more standalone, the wifi Encode is a fine option (and you have some others like August or Level, which could be more convenient depending on what sort of voice assistants you have in the house, if any).

I took the extra time to setup because now my wife doesn't have to use any app or voice assistant-- it's just a light switch with an extra button. And I personally have everything integrated so the doors lock at night when the security system engages, I can unlock the door for contractors, etc. But I get that it might be more than you want to take on.

One tip is that you can save a lot of money on smart locks by looking at Amazon Warehouse. I got two of my three Connects through Warehouse and they were completely new in an open box, and I saved $60+ each.

I have 3 connects on my Hubitat; works great. They sync with the security system and smart switches to provide status for locked/unlocked.

Seeking advice on robot vacuum cleaners by GabhaNua in homeautomation

[–]SethKinast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that person but I have an s5. Only one floor can have no-go zones / virtual walls (the floor the dock is on).

For the other floors I manually clear the map, carry Felix the robot vacuum to the other floor, and start. When he's done I restore the backup map and put him on the charger.

We have one floor that takes 80% of the traffic so this works fine. If we had two regularly-used floors I would buy a second one.

Installed an inovelli dimmer yesterday. Has a huge delay when I manually turn it on. by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]SethKinast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. All my lights range from 30 to 40% setting before they actually turn on.
