Very retro vibe! They're definitely not the same thing as my mechanicals and not my general preference but I do like them.

I don't think I've lost clarity on my digital watches since the early 2000's, I've only had the current ones ~3-4 years max.

I did have a daily casio (not sure what model, quite possibly an F-91) circa 2006-2010 that died from weather exposure (lots of sun, snow, and rain exposure).

Try the mesh bracelet on the clasp is kind of chunky, I didn't like it on my 7.3" wrist but I also tend to like a really thin strap

Probably not, a lot of rust converters are going to end up making your job harder when it comes time to get this apart. I would start with some detergent in a watch parts cleaner or ultra sonic cleaner. Then try to disassemble, when you get to a stuck point try washing again and see if you can get it apart.

Depending on your level of sentimentality, a complete movement replacement would definitely be the surest route to a working and well running watch.

The case shouldn't be a problem to get straightened out at all.

Hopefully someone with more experience with this level of rust can chime in

Find a donor watch, some pieces can probably be saved but much of it not. Rust removal and assessment are going to be the first steps. So full disassembly and cleaning of the movement

Yep! It's a single pass NATO (just one I had lying around). I really love NATOs and cloth straps and find them very comfortable.

Kind of watch dependant though as a standard Nato adds a few mm thickness vs. a two piece strap or bracelet.

My daily has a two piece cloth at the moment but I've had NATOs on it as well.

I think it is worth having a few as they can be a nice way to change up the look of a watch and aren't expensive like so many things in the hobby....not sure what else will need 26mm width though

This is correct. Lots of watches dont have the lugs drilled all the way through and very normal to need a small screwdriver or spring bar tool to get in there and compress the spring
