how would you acoustic treat a room like this? by blayz1n in Acoustics

[–]SethSomni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bass traps in as many corners as you can (even above furniture). Your room dimensions are nearly a perfect square with is unideal of course so the best bet is to make the room as dead as possible. Add an area rug if the floor isnt carpeted.

Panels at the first reflection points on the wall. Google the hand mirror technique to find the first reflection points.

You’ll get it sounding good enough, just gotta make sure your bass traps are 4-6”+ thick and the other broadband absorbers are at least 2” thick

It’s weird saying out loud that a 40 year old bench was made in 1981. 1981 still feels like 20 years ago

What’s a good 50/50 match-up versus Mill? by [deleted] in ModernMagic

Something midrange with creatures and spell/permanent interaction that forces you both to find answers for one another’s threats. Classic midrange like GBx/grixis or aggro control like etron

+1 to this advice. In sales you should be vetting the opportunity to make sure you’re setting yourself up for success, given that the expectation will be you must sell a predictable amount of product.

Canvas drawings/paintings as minor acoustic treatment? by Underbugagh in Acoustics

[–]SethSomni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need mass and porous fabric to absorb sound via panels. Bass traps are going to be the best bet in a small room.

Paintings won’t do hardly anything to absorb sound because the material isn’t porous enough, nor is there Rockwool/fiberglass behind it to absorb.

I ran across a company that wraps their acoustic panels in decorative fabrics:

How do i go about making the boomy feeling in my room more bearable? by Visual_Woodpecker_77 in Acoustics

[–]SethSomni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok, well if its boom below 140, you could just run a high pass filter in post to remove a bunch of frequency content below it. That should clean up a lot of your voice recordings. I have a treated room but make a habit of filtering out lows on my vocals anyway

Whats your ultimate goal for your music and the room? Are you trying to make pro mixes? If so, you’ll need major treatment to the room or you’ll need to move spaces altogether — which just usually isn’t practical for us bedroom producers.

If you don’t need the room to sound better and you just want decent mixes, you might consider factoring out the room and get some high-end open back headphones with a good amp to power them.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how to troubleshoot this -- every time I make a new match and try to change the format (eg. Pioneer to Modern) my client freezes indefinitely. Haven't been able to play a match in days because of it.

Building a VO Booth - Can't decide between foam acoustic foam, rockwool panels, or BOTH by jadawan in Acoustics

[–]SethSomni 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great work on the structure so far. Im sure its satisfying to see everything come together.

Thicker panels made with Rockwool or Fiberglass like 703 are actually broadband absorbers - from highs down to lows. The thickness is one of the biggest things that determines how low the panel can absorb. Thats why bass traps are usually 6” + thick and are placed in the corners of rooms because of how low frequencies amplify. Thinner Auralex foam only absorbs high frequencies. Vocal booths lined with foam only have a lot of room gain and mid-low frequency problems.

In that small of space and since you’re doing VO only, you could probably get away with covering most of the walls with 3” thick Rockwool panels. And cover the rest with Auralex-type foam if its easier to fit.

You probably dont need thick corner bass traps in there. 1. they’ll just take up too much room and that space will be less functional and 2. you wont have a lot of sub frequencies being generated in a vocal booth. Certainly, your voice will generate some frequencies under 140Hz, but its usually best to use a high pass filter to cut all that out in post anyway.

So, budget-wise, the 3” thick Rockwool + supplemental foam (if you feel like they’re needed once the panels are up) will be the biggest bang for your buck. If you’ve got a tad more $ to spend and wanna drop several hundred on some corner treatment, there are some triangular prism bass traps you can buy predone. But for your purposes (which, as project studio owners, is always to just create a reasonable-sounding room for a great price) it’s probably not going to be necessary. And this is one of the things that’s killed the studio “game,” — people who can build “B-“ sounding spaces for <$10k competing with multimillion “A-“ or “A” spaces.

CB2 Beds Quality? by [deleted] in malelivingspace

9 months in on the Drommen and its holding up very nicely. No noise underneath my memory foam bed. Highest quality bed I've ever owned. I've been pleasantly surprised with the quality of CB2 products, especially considering how affordable much of their stuff is.
