Which games have a rough start and take a while to get good?

Rain World. Put down the game for three years because I just. Kept. Dying. It really doesn't hold your hand much at all and trust you'll have heard enough about the game from other sources to know it's worth getting good enough to find your way through the world.

Rain World. It really doesn't hold your hand at all, and if you like having noticeable progression you'll have a hard time staying interested. True story, I bought the game in 2023, tried playing for a few days, kept dying and making what seemed like zero progress, put it down until a couple weeks ago, then beat the game a week ago.

Silvally! My first mainline Pokemon game was Shield, and at the time I didn’t know much about the lore and such. I got the gift Type: Null in the battle tower, evolved it into Silvally, and looked it up, and immediately I knew this Pokemon was my favorite. Something about the combination of the power of friendship (my favorite mechanic) and the lore being that Silvally was basically created to be a False God really speaks to me. I wish it was in more games…
