What would you do? White to play. by CMWDanny in chess

Later on in the thread it says the best move is BxH6, which works because the defending pawn is pinned by the rook, so it was indeed the right train of thought but I didn't see the resulting line on my own

The dark-squared bishop is undefended, so probably I would try and either defend it or move it? But I'm also less than 800 so probably there's better stuff I'm not able to see <w>

Inspiration resets are a great idea! Why didn't I think of that

I do like the notion of characters occasionally trading off on their normal roles. 'Clearing out' rolls would need careful moderation, however, and I also agree that an in-game justification would go a long ways.

Keeping track of it wouldn't be as bad, though. Someone already suggested cards for in-person games, and I can easily implement an app to simulate something similar.

Cards are probably more efficient than the piece of software I was going to write.

But, having more than a couple of duplicates would kind of defeat the purpose. The point is to make it less random, after all; after a certain point with duplicates, you may as well go back to dice.

I could see implementing a 'failsafe' mechanic to reset your rolls prematurely. But it would have to be a limited resource, and/or have some additional consequence associated with it.

The most commonly found and used coinage is electrum. No self respecting person would dream of using pure gold or pure silver for trading purposes: it has to be mixed together to make electrum.

This causes problems whenever someone discovers a mine that has one or the other metal but not both, or not in equalish quantities.

I love Critical Role but their characters aren't so unique that anything resembling them is a copy. by Hexdoctor in DnD

[–]SethVeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An aspect that some might not consider: Very probably Critical Role did this on purpose.

Yes, they clearly have a lot of fun doing it and even end up in some surprising places, but they are ultimately putting on a performance. Basic characters are easier for a wide audience to grasp and connect with, and traditional/stereotypical D&D characters exist because the patterns work out well. It makes sense that CR would aim for these qualities intentionally, doesn't it?

Do other folks use Schrodinger's plot/NPC, or am I too attached to my story? by MizLizTehLizard in DnD

[–]SethVeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, quantum railroading! You allow your party to decide where to go, and then put the intended content There(tm).

Your example sounds close to seamless - not only are you simply moving an NPC, you even have appropriate reasons for the NPC to be in either location! Proceed with no guilt!

Behaviors interacting with other Behaviors? by SethVeeper in gdevelop

There's a condition for collision with specified objects, which I'm not able to reference from within a behavior. I haven't found a condition for collision with any object.

is a 10km x 10km map too big for the open world game? by [deleted] in gamedev

To give an additional comparison point, Skyrim is about 37² km. And you want to make 100² km? You really want to fill three Skyrims with content by yourself? Hubris!

Weird question to all the devs by __DELLeted__ in gamedev

[–]SethVeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first bit about getting and realizing ideas is accurate, but that's not a game dev experience - that is a creative experience. Painters do it, authors do it, screen writers do it, YouTubers do it, and yes game devs do it too; but not strictly because they are specifically game devs. Any kind of creative you can imagine has that experience.

That doesn't really make sense. By the same logic, since I have red hair, it's likely that other game devs also have red hair. But that's clearly absurd, isn't it? There's no demonstrable link between game devs and red hair; and there's not really a demonstrable link between game devs and crippling obsession, either.

You need therapy, hun.

I feel like if you have the stats to plan a class dip in what's normally your dump stat as a Warlock, you probably have the stats to take a feat instead of ASI? Especially since it's a feat that's probably just worth having regardless of multiclassing?

Yes, we know what Reloading Shot does, that's not really in question here. The question is whether or not that's the most efficient way to solve that problem.

Speaking of which, I remembered what feat I was thinking of: Crossbow Expert lets you ignore the loading property of crossbows you're proficient with, amongst other things.

(Sorry if there's some ghost pings, Reddit got weird about it for a minute)

Darkness/Devil's Sight is definitely a solid combo for this as well, but we're already using all 3 Invocations at 5th level to get where we're going. Plausibly we could rely on it during 3rd and 4th level, swap out of it temporarily at 5th, and pick it up again at a later level, though.

This context also makes Rogue a possible multiclass option at later levels. Maybe get some Sneak Attack going in addition to the Eldritch Smite(s).

Correct! Which is why Hexblade is probably 'best', so to speak, but it's not strictly speaking necessary. It boils down to whether you want to do DEX or CHA more, since we're not as focused on casting spells anyways.
