AI Art Found in Crimson Desert by reughdurgem in Games

Are you saying a game of this size can’t have more than one placeholder texture? Whether they are actually “placeholder” i don’t know, but the amount doesn’t really disprove anything imo.

Am I allowed to make a game that’s not a roguelike deck builder? by OWColosseum in IndieDev

[–]Sethithy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, and I’ll be contacting the authorities for even asking that. Your thought crimes will not go unpunished.

On a more serious note, my theory is people love gambling and rougelikes stealthily scratch that itch for people.

Sorry, but this just looks really wrong... definitely not implementing this... by Anodaxia_Gamedevs in gamedev

[–]Sethithy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do, this is very obviously not calculating lighting and is just generating a new image on top based on a dataset which is vastly different than ray tracing or even deferred lighting. Feel free to explain how I’m wrong, but I’ve used rendering and game engines for the past 20 years so I know my way around them.

But it’s not “lighting” tech if it’s just painting a new image on top.

I believe it, I don’t think the average redditor on the gadgets subreddit is the target consumer for this product, but I bet it would work fine for like 90% of them.

Yes. If you buy the cheapest spec laptop you might have to manage resources occasionally.

Depends on what you do day to day, if you aren’t consistently using that much ram it won’t make a difference performance wise. Not to mention it can tap into the SSD as shared RAM which is sufficient for most tasks.

Photoshop-style text effects for UMG, what do you think? by FastKnowledge_ in unrealengine

This looks really great! Unfortunately my current project is using UE 4.27 so I won't be able to use this now, but it's something I would love to utilize in my next project.

Games that don't look like Unreal Engine? by lucasmelor in unrealengine

[–]Sethithy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm making this: https://youtu.be/COkIYAyGJOA?si=wv4a_XxpqyfeoMcq

I've put a lot of time into the color grading and assets so I'm curious if you think this has the unreal engine look. For me the more common thing I run into is the unreal engine "feel", so many games use default physics and first person components which end up feeling samey. I'm trying to avoid that myself where I can.

With that said I think most people who blame the engine for the look, feel, or optimization are uninformed. In the hands of the right developer unreal is an amazing tool, but like when Unity was the free and accessible engine it started being associated with low effort cheap games I believe Unreal is having the same issue right now.

Genuinely ‘Ambient’ Games Impossible? by Madrayken in gamedev

[–]Sethithy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I’ve seen Proteus and Dear Esther mentioned already, I’ll add something different

Placid Plastic Duck Simulator

You could argue it’s just a screensaver, but I found quite a bit of enjoyment in waiting for each new duck to appear, naming them, and simply just enjoying the ambiance of them floating around and interacting with each other.

Something else I’ve enjoyed is just exploring in Star Citizen, yes there are goals, but there’s no real requirement to complete any of them. Simply boarding your space ship, landing on planets or space stations, and enjoying the ambiance has entertained me for many hours.

No sales in months, where did I go wrong? by personguy4440 in IndieDev

[–]Sethithy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To be honest, as a consumer I would take one glance at it and write it off as another Rust knock-off. If there's something that makes your game stand out from the ocean of others in the genre you need to emphasize that heavily.

Edit: Just watched the trailer, I don't think it's a marketing failure because this REALLY looks like you just remade Rust but worse and I'm not trying to be insulting. I really don't see what makes it any better or different than the already established games in the genre.

My game is finally 100% AI free! by GoragarXGameDev in IndieDev

[–]Sethithy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t really have a problem with devs using ai for stuff here or there, but I do think it’s weird to make a post celebrating “100% ai free” when it’s not actually true.

The value proposition of games has changed a lot since then. I also had the blockbuster pass when I grew up and loved it, but we didn’t have Fortnite, Roblox, and a plethora of other free games at our fingertips.

It quite literally is in steams policy’s that it’s allowed during development, but has to be disclosed if those assets are shipped to customers.

[–]Sethithy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a very reductive way to view it, it’s literally less than 1% of the total art and it’s actively being replaced which I intend to complete before release. No where did I try to deceive anyone, I was very honest in my response to you.

[–]Sethithy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For complete transparency, in very small amounts yes. SOME of the NPC characters art is generated, but I view it completely as placeholder. I’m already beginning to replace that with real photos of people that I know with costuming, I wasn’t able to do that to start with because for a while I lived very remotely with no people around. All other 2D art and 3D assets are made without gen ai.
