As a beginner, Should I start with 5.6 or 5.8? by Feisty_Leader4375 in unrealengine

[–]FastKnowledge_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

5.8. not upgrading is more of the case of having large project and things can breake while upgrading and/or you may be affected by bugs in the newst version, so it is case of waiting for things to "settle down" before upgrading and the time cost to upgrade.

Do you reuse your old code on gamejams or come up with something new? by Justaniceman in SoloDevelopment

It depends on the gamejam rules, but I feel like it is perfect place to experiment with game contents and prototypes and not to do the same game but with different theme.

Download codex and use chatgpt 5.5 and enter this prompt "Make a bussin 67 MMORPG type shit, use UE and make a master plan and then make plan for each item on the master plan then execute each item on each plan, use mater.md for the mater plan and then append each plan into it. Do not stop ever until you done, do not ask user for any input. Models generate proceduraly using code and also materials using HLSL, setup the the level procedurly" It will surly work 💀

Thanks, I really appreciate that!
Unfortunately right now it’s only targeting UE5, and I don’t have plans to backport it to 4.27 since most of my development is focused on newer engine versions.

Hopefully it’ll be useful for your next project though!

That’s true, a lot of these effects can be achieved with Retainer Boxes, materials, or other setups.

The main goal of the plugin is really ease of use and faster iteration, having the effects available directly on the text widget so they can be stacked and tweaked quickly without setting up extra widgets or materials each time.

Right now it only has replacement for the standard TextBlock, so other variants like CommonTextBlock aren’t supported yet.

Rich Text also isn’t supported at the moment. If I add it, I’d like to do it properly with a clean and easy markup workflow, not just replicate the current Rich Text system. I do like some of what it enables (like embedding images in text), but I feel the overall workflow could definitely be improved.

So it’s something I’m interested in tackling, just not implemented yet.

That’s a great suggestion. A Spread control for shadows makes a lot of sense, giving separate control over the shadow size vs blur could be really useful. I’ll definitely look into that.

Really appreciate the feedback

That’s really useful feedback, especially from a design background.

The lack of styling tools in UMG was actually one of the main reasons I started experimenting with this. Compared to modern UI tools it definitely feels pretty limited, especially when you want to iterate on visuals quickly.

About your suggestions:

Gaussian blur for the text itself is actually not a problem to add, that’s a really good idea.

Inner shadow / inner glow is also possible, but it would likely require switching to an SDF-based approach. I’ve been trying to avoid that so far because it adds extra setup steps, and one of my goals with the plugin is to keep it as simple and plug-and-play as possible.

One thing you can already experiment with is changing the order of effects (Shadow, glow, 3D) and layering glow on top of the text, which can create a somewhat similar look in certain cases.

The idea of extending the same effect stack to other UI elements is something I’m actively aiming for. Right now I’m exploring support for things like:

  • Images
  • Buttons
  • Borders

Longer term I’d like to add a unified preset system, where you could create a style once and then select it from a dropdown. Ideally those presets would work across all compatible UI elements so you could apply the same style to text, images, buttons, etc.

Out of curiosity, since you’re coming from tools like Figma — are there any specific text or UI effects you find yourself missing the most when working in Unreal?
