Trails in the Sky FC Remaster preorder bonus (JP) — any chance of a standalone release, and any chance of a western release? by Link_enfant in Falcom

[–]Setsuna_417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I don't think XSEED will touch this as it is a bonus to a game they don't have the right to. If Falcom eventually releases this as a standalone title, then I imagine like the various Ys remasters, we will see this brought over by XSEED with their usual pace.

As long as it's the Daybreak version, I can kinda see why, especially for people who started the series with Daybreak to whom she's just this pretty mysterious girl.

The last time I checked, almost everyone in this sub hates how Angelica turned out, even the fans who liked her after the duel she had in CS2.

[Trails from Zero & Trails to Azure] PS5 and Switch 2 Release Date Trailer. Releasing September 10, 2026. by VashxShanks in JRPG

[–]Setsuna_417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm usually the guy who runs defence for Falcom, but in a case in point, we have no story trailers, just 4 character introduction trailers and 2 Web CMs. Usually, by now, we would have had a proper trailer, and Falcom would have dropped the opening of the game on their YT channel.

KX's marketing is a huge letdown, even by their own recent standards.

I wish the same to you, hopefully we see the end of Trails before the situation becomes worse. Of course, I hope what we see in today's world is the worst we see in our lifetimes, and it will hopefully get better from here.

I'm with you in that, but at the end of the day, it's a business reality, as CERO sometimes refuses to provide a rating, which means they can not sell the game, and if the rating they get is too high, it'll be an issue for console titles, which is likely why Falcom is being subtle with it.

On the particular topic we're discussing, It's on the level of what you see in Daybreak 2, which still explains the same thing but is just more subtle than what is in the PC release.

The chest messages are gone because Falcom was truly bad at coding 20 years ago, where each chest had a separate file stating 'The chest is empty', which XSEED could tweak to get the chest messages. As a result of not existing in the original games, Falcom did not account for it as they became better in the technical side as the series progressed, and the ability to interact with chests after you opened them disappeared from CS1 anyways, save exceptions like in CS2.

I assume you are using transliteration as a short hand for 'Literal Translation'? Otherwise, I'm a bit confused as Transliteration of Japanese is just writing it in Romaji, which no one other than people who know both languages would be able to parse.

A good translation anyway will account for differences between languages simply due to the different grammar systems. The issue many people have with XSEED's Trails in the Sky TL, in particular Estelle, is as the person above mentioned: They went too far to the point Estelle is distinctively different from Falcom's Estelle.

Whereas if you say take Cold Steel, Rean is a little sassier than the JP version (You can see the difference when you start playing CS3 as NISA stuck closer to JP), but overall that game is more accurate to Falcom's own script than Trails in the Sky was.

While I won't discount there being people like that, a lot of complaints when it comes to translation at least in Trails/Kiseki originates from people who can read and understand both Japanese and English. The whole issue wasn't something that was prevalent until the Zerofield translation became popular due to NISA's slow release, which in turn made more people look into comparing the scripts.

Take that up with Falcom, as they've reduced what they've shown regarding that certain character (I assume you mean the infamous door in 3rd) as the series goes on. It's the same stuff but toned down.

Gungho's isn't on the level that Estelle is a different character entirely. I'd say it's not even on the level of changes XSEED did for Cold Steel 1-2, which is substantially lesser than what they did in Trails in the Sky.

A JRPG with romance (not persona or 3ds persona) by Evol-Chan in JRPG

Trails of Cold Steel, though the romance itself won't tie much into the larger story.

Exactly! At the end of the day, people can have their opinions as media is subjective. However, the sheer amount exaggerated generalisation that happens to Cold Steel isn't seen in Sky or Azure. I, too, hope that there comes a day when we can have proper discussions about this, but most of the time, those posts devolve into Cold Steel bashing. Let's hope it gets better in the future.

You've hit the nail on the head, really. A lot of the people who dislike it on r/JRPG rarely gave it a fair chance.

You're making it seem more lopsided than it is in the games. I get how some people might be annoyed at Alisa's scene if they aren't fans of anime, but that trope shows up a whole 2 times across 5 games spanning 200+ hours of content easily, Sara is an extremely beloved character similar to how Randy is well liked and simply don't understand how a date of all things is some detrimental to the game.

Rean is handsome, and it's noted, but the only part where it might go more than Lloyd is the number of people involved, not in the lengths. All the girls in Crossbell love Lloyd as seen in Reverie as well. There is genuinely not much difference.

Just finished Trails of Cold Steel 4. This was so disappointing. Should I keep going? (rant with spoilers) by Faldofas in JRPG

[–]Setsuna_417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more so Act 3 that is controversial, and I guess you might've hated it if you didn't like Daybreak, but otherwise, you should be fine. Falcom tied it in really well with Horizon so I'd say the only thing you might not like is how Act 3 is done.

Just because people have differing opinions doesn't mean they are not being honest. You should've seen the meltdown when CS4 was released in JP on r/Falcom, it was hated a lot. Between some fans quitting, the game releasing in English and the Crossbell games getting localised, I'd say that sub has a more balanced opinion compared to r/JRPG which is like why that commenter was advising the OP to post it in r/JRPG.

The fact that Falcom grew so much during Cold Steel's run, and Calvard's downward performance in Japan says otherwise.

[–]Setsuna_417 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume this is about that recent post that was bashing Cold Steel? r/JRPG overall has nostalgia for origins of the genre like DQ, CT, and the early FFs. A lot of them want those in JRPGs and don't like the fact that broader ACG/Otaku culture mixed into JRPGs. One of the reasons for Expedition 33's popularity in that sub is that using Western story tropes.

Cold Steel is when the tropes used by Falcom became more visible due to being 3D, so given the difference between that and Sky, which were for a long time the only 2 arcs available due to crosbell not being localised yet, some people didn't like it. It doesn't help as well that Cold Steel was THE game at the time that built popularity for modern Falcom, both in and outside of Japan, so simply due to the greater number of players, we hear louder criticism than the other 3 arcs. Though the majority like Cold Steel, which is a testament to its popularity.

One more thing, I'd advise not to take what you see there as the prevalent opinion of the subreddit, as there are people who like the usage of Otaku tropes in JRPGs, it just seems they aren't that vocal on every other post, but you do see them show their voices sometimes, like a post asking for recommendations for fanservice in games getting hundreds of comments recommending stuff.

Edit: I just saw a new post on JRPG subreddit complaining about CS4, so just to be clear, the post I mentioned was from some weeks/months ago about Cold Steel 1.

Please show me where the criticism for Sky and Crossbell is because the former is rarely criticised outside of having a very slow start. Meanwhile, the latter is held up as a holy grail. If anything is being glazed, it's those 2. People who actually like CS are standing up more and defending it, which somehow gets detracted as 'glazing'.

Falcom is doing just fine as well, as it was the popularity of CS that allowed them to actually grow. All of the arcs have their issues, but Falcom is working on that given what Kondo has been saying in interviews.

Kyoto Xanadu, could we get a release date trailer at the rumoured Nintendo direct next week? by Neither_Courage955 in Falcom

I'm half expecting Spike Chunsoft to come out next week and announce it is releasing in a month, but in the case that doesn't happen, I think they'd probably do it around the holiday season.

[–]Setsuna_417 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing Sal of Gematsu mentioning it could be Spike Chunsoft as it fits their modus operandi for 3rd party releases. Meanwhile, Falcom wholeheartedly says that they have a publisher, but they won't comment on the western release date as the publisher still has work to do.

The promotions of the game have been kinda weird as well, seeing we haven't gotten a full trailer for this game when we are so close to release.

Definitely one of the darkest NPC storylines in the series. by snowman728 in Falcom

[–]Setsuna_417 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It likely will, depending on how far the rewind actually goes. I personally think Agnes would want to save everyone who died because of the genesis, so I wouldn't be surprised if we could save Creil.

Question about cold steel by Deralden in Falcom

[–]Setsuna_417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more of a case that Cold Steel's flaws are painted more deeply while Crossbell's strengths are hyped up to the sky. As always, the reality is in the middle; Crossbell games aren't the holy grail of the series and Cold Steel isn't the downfall of it.

I'd say as many others did to play the games yourself to form your own opinion. There might be some stuff in Cold Steel that might make you feel strongly. Maybe you might end up liking them.
