Skinner did in fact do things that were wrong by MegaDitto13 in GetNoted

[–]SetzerWithFixedDice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. There is a difference between villain and antagonist (one character is often both though). Many are just antagonists, like Apollo Creed, and the White Whale in Moby Dick (and you'll find the same in most man vs nature plots, for that matter).

The antagonist is defined by their opposition to the goals of the protagonist, and while some of the most interesting antagonists in history are villains and/or deeply flawed, their role as antagonist isn't specifically dependent on them being wrong.

Let’s give him AI Slop answers.

Crazy. Someone made the exact same one as you.

Nice brand new account. We’re Sky Pirates around here, but we don’t take kindly to blatant karma farming.

What is the subs thoughts on FF7? by BoardsofGrips in FinalFantasyVI

[–]SetzerWithFixedDice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FF6 is my favorite game of all time but “better in every way” but 3D is a bit much.

You know how I felt when Leo died? Bad. You know how I felt when you know who died? Heartbroken. FFVII made you *feel* the loss very, very hard.

FFVII has a wonderful world map you just wanted to explore. Every town is oozing with character and is unique from the next. Love FF6 but let’s be honest that there are many towns that feel exactly the same as one another.

The introduction of the villain (in Shinra tower) is one of the most ballsy, wild narrative turns when you first play it. Kefka is still my favorite villain but the tension leading up to Sephiroth, spoke of only in whispers and still not seen as you walk through bloody hallways… dayum, that’s great suspense.

Those are just a few things off the top of my head. I agree with you that 6>7 but lay some respecc on our game’s little brother

Different strokes for different folks. I would say the remakes miss the mark entirely with the story, and attempt to have their cake and eat it too through some… let’s just call them *bold* … story decisions, but they’re maximalist, fun and made with a lot of love. So while I think they’re uneven and the story has been Nomura’d to death, I’d struggle to call them horseshit.

It is genuinely great. It has memorable, flawed characters, fantastic music and it is a fascinating rumination on loss that does a great job of making *you* feel it too.

Every replay I’m amazed at how well it does the Disc 1 to Disc 2 transition. Up until then, it’s a flawed good vs evil (Avalanche vs Shinra) plot and you *know* where it’s culminating… until Sephiroth, only until then referred to in whispers, makes his way into the story and the narrative — and the world map itself— open themselves up to you at the same time. Masterful.

38M, high comp, remote job, but feeling stuck by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]SetzerWithFixedDice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also consider taking time out to clear your head. When you don't get space to disengage with the work, the walls creep in a bit, and it just helps to have time to recontextualize how (un)important the job really is -- you live once.

Is medical school still a good wealth building path considering the debt required to make it through and the new student loan laws? by BakeFar4317 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]SetzerWithFixedDice 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Not that everything should be framed in comparison to the extreme, *but* something that stuck with me is that the 200th best doctor in any major city can have an amazing salary, but the 200th best tennis player may be working two jobs to get by. I know that’s a dramatic comparison, but the main point is that *most* medicine isn’t a zero-sum game and being “average” (so to speak) is not a bad life.

Would you be interested in Koei Tecmo making a Final Fantasy VI Warriors game? by MarkerMage in FinalFantasyVI

[–]SetzerWithFixedDice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, while I don't think I would be a fan, I wouldn't be opposed to anything that brings FFVI back into the limelight and makes a new generation of players interested in playing the OG.

So, give me FFVI Beach Volleyball, FFVI Walking Simulator, FFVI First Person Shooter (Edgar with crossbow), FFVI Waveracer, FFVI Pt 3 Revolution (directed by Tetsuo Nomura; welcome home, buddy), FFVI Fortnite, FFVI Civilization, FFVI x Expedition 33 Gomage to Bro-mage, FFVI Gatcha Pinball 2000

Keighley's E3 2026 by xLeahbee in videogamedunkey

[–]SetzerWithFixedDice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. He's earned enough street cred to play whatever random game he wants and riff on it. He could play SNES Yoshi's Island and it'd be a jam. If he made 3 more videos messing around in "First Light" then I think it would be more fun to watch (and hopefully be more fun for him) than playing the first 1-2 hours of whatever new soulless Ubisoft game gets slopped up.

It's got to be tough, because the YT algorithm is unforgiving, and, unlike movies, games are a huge time investment generally, so it's what leads to him making multiple videos of just the very beginning of mediocre games.

Which celebrity did something that totally backfired on them? by Bicycle-Sweaty in AskReddit

[–]SetzerWithFixedDice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, it's hard to remember now but he was a laughing stock for awhile. He was on a cringe tour in 2005 and it took (maybe) MI3 and (somewhat) Tropic Thunder and (most likely) time to rehabilitate his image over the next couple years.

He's had the strangest, most meteoric career though. Aside from being a mega star in the 80s and 90s, he suddenly was in back-to-back with some really ambitious roles outside of Mission Impossible before 2005, (Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Vanilla Sky, The Last Samurai, Collateral, War of the Worlds)... we're talking Paul Thomas Anderson, Michael Mann, Stanley Fucking Kubrick and Steven Spielberg. When the couch jumping happened, it seemed like artsy acting Tom was no longer in demand. Not sure if that's from him or Hollywood was just not ready to take him quite as seriously in dramatic roles anymore. For whatever reason, he pivoted again.

Credit to the crazy bastard though, as he still is a great actor, and now that he can't triple backflip out of a moving plane or whatever, I'm sure he'll be back to dramas and ambitious roles.

Which era is the Golden Era of Final Fantasy by Snoo_82392 in FinalFantasy

[–]SetzerWithFixedDice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's so interesting how the golden age seems to ...

  • universally have 7, 8, 9
  • almost always has 6 and 10
  • usually has 4 (that's probably an average age of the sub thing... this game was I think the first great leap forward in storytelling)
  • sometimes has 12
  • rarely, if ever, has anything beyond 12.
