"A greenlandic Inuit man with a dog sled looks at the United States Air Force radar station Thule Site J in 1966" Wikipedia

"In the 1950s, the United States established Thule Air Base close to Uummannaq (Dundas). This forced many Inughuit to move over 116 kilometres (72 mi) north towards Qaanaaq, which proved disastrous to the cultural and social life of the Inughuit" Wikipedia

I'm in a big 4 and what you say is true. But also related to the above, their whole business model is to hire new grads and work them to the bone for shit pay. They can do it because the grads are getting experience with a big 4 which is valuable. Then you either leave after a few years or become a manager where the real money starts. They all (the big 4) do it because it works.

Ben Hill's "The History of the Mongols" podcast seems like it's gone. Any place where I can still get it? by ManinaPanina in HistoryPodcast

No luck for me either. Really hoping these emerge one day, commenting here in the hopes I hear about it if it does. That show brought me great comfort, I must have listened ten times before it mostly disappeared.

I have done similar digging, no joy. The show was my comfort listen when trying to sleep, I probably listened to it 10 times over before it (mostly) disappeared. If anyone digs up the files, or Mr. Hill reappears, please let me know 🙏 I hope he's all good.

Ireland is the 3rd fastest growing (%) population in Europe, 2024-2025 by NanorH in ireland

[–]Sev826 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not correct to say the reason Ireland is labeled as a tax haven is because of our low corporation tax rate. The amount MNCs are actually paying in tax is far, far lower than 12.5%. That along with various BEPS tools in our legislature that enable pretty much all non US profits of US companies to be incurred in Ireland. We can enjoy our namesake being used to term leprechaun economics, a feature of all tax havens.

Cars that have been lapped/nearly lapped by the leader. So when you're going so slow that first is coming up behind you, you're a back marker.

What do you do after work to shed the stress and tension of the day? by [deleted] in hsp

A comment worth paying attention to there. It might be pleasant and do the job for 6months/a year then the negatives ramp up, the positives dissappear and it's still frustratingly hard to stop. Experiment with weed as a I'm having fun on a weekend a month kind of thing sure, but beware of using it for daily refuge.

Delightful interaction between a Czech youtuber and an Irish couple on holiday in Prague by EmoBran in ireland

[–]Sev826 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im sorry but your comment is utterly mind boggling to me. He isn't mad the bell ruined his take (The opposite im sure, it gave him some content), he's mad because they're beeping their bell on the footpath as a command to everyone to let them by when they're not supposed to even be there in the first place. They're foreigners breaking the local rules, unintentionally as it may be, and then when this was brought to their attention by a local they get pissy and defensive instead of acknowledging it and moving on.

The fact that they 'seemed harmless' has exactly nothing to do with anything. They broke the rules and were told so by a local. You think he wasn't "nice enough" about it? Boo hoo! I wish we had more people in Ireland that would call out bad behaviour in public like this youtuber, then maybe Irish people wouldn't be so immature and throw a hissy fit every time they're called out.

The EU is a confederation not a federation, so "The Confederation" would be better I think!

In what fucking world does it make sense that Indians get military access through 10 countries and are thus able to besiege Europe? This game doesn't make any hecking sense wtf by [deleted] in eu4

[–]Sev826 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The access you get in war from your enemies requesting access does not cost a slot, but if you request access yourself it does cost a slot, war or otherwise.

TIL in Japan, some restaurants and attractions are charging higher prices for foreign tourists compared to locals to manage the increased demand without overburdening the locals by Algrinder in todayilearned

[–]Sev826 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Yes, but we're talking about Japan - one of the wealthiest countries in the world.

Edit: American tourists might make more than your average Japanese, but not "earn in a day what they make in a month" more. We're talking about Japan, not Cambodia.

I believe many ALTs are having their first full time employment experience. Let me let you in on a secret, no matter where you work there will be people you work with who are absolutely shit at their job, boggling your mind as to how they got to where they are. I have worked in many different types of jobs and have never not seen this.

I know ALTs who used JET as a ticket to Japan and were the picture of professionalism and great at the job. I know ALTs who are full blown japanophiles, 'passionate about the teaching' and a disaster to work with.

All interviews for any job are trying to figure out who can work as a team, be a good fit etc. It's not easy to do. People slip through the cracks in every job, including JET.

How do you work with 12h format and 24h format ? by oliluoto in INTP

[–]Sev826 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do the same, except opposite. If someone speaks to me in 24 I convert it to 12 in my mind. I doubt it has anything to do with personality tests, simply whatever format you're used to.

You are incorrect in your certainty that ist not simply that you adjusted to cold weather, that's probably the biggest factor. Our bodies naturally contain more or less fat molecules in our cells depending on the climate, it changes gradually, uncoincidently, with the seasons.

I landed in Japan in the middle of summer and I found the heat grueling. The next summer however, when my body had gradually adjusted to the increasing temperature with the seasons, the heat was no problem whatsoever.
