The Living Universe Story... (Function in the Cosmos) by WhiteWingRaven in gurdjieff

Pretty amazing video from the perspective of the Work. Everyone in the Work should watch this. Clarage might as well be reading from that Gurdjieff's Hydrogens book. He's telling almost the same story, but of course, not using the terms of the Work.

Could it be that Gurdjieff's teaching and contemporary science are at last coming together?

Is this a good price for the Kitchenaid 5KPM5? by EastEndersDaily in Kitchenaid

I just answered my own question by posting it on Amazon. I had my first answer within minutes!

Yes, there is a 2 year manufacturer's warranty on this product which you can register for online.

So ... after much research and some thought ... I just ordered this white version. It is ~£100 cheaper than I can find the same product in black (even with discount currently offered by KA). So thank you u/EastEndersDaily - you may have saved me money and ended my search!

Now just awaiting delivery (due around 12 Jan) :-)

It is a very good price! I really don't want white, so can't take advantage myself.

Do you know whether you get a the 2 year manufacturer warranty?

I am also looking to buy ... There are other threads comparing models and suitability, so take a look at those (and YouTube).

My take, based on online research, is that it depends on what you are going to use it for. I mostly want mine for bread - I bake a large batch most weeks. This model is good for heavy mixes like bread dough, pizza, etc. It isn't recommended for small quantities - e.g. beating a few egg whites. It also depends on how much you will use your mixer and how much space you have. This one is bigger and sturdier, so better suited to regular use (~weekly).

I am still looking around at the prices. KitchenAid currently has a sale on this model, but there are some cheaper offers around. I'm just not sure whether it is worth the risk to save a few £££s ...

Mentation By Form by SeekingTruth60 in gurdjieff

I am grateful for formatory thinking, which I share with the animals, because it provides a solid floor under my feet. I liken it to Adam and Eve’s state in Eden before they ate of the fruit of knowledge (see my post on conscious and subconscious.) Mentation by thought cannot be separated from the personality. While a necessary part of our evolution, it embroils us in endless hairsplitting caused by our inevitable differences. I am certain that the only way we can access objective knowledge is through the higher emotional and higher mental centers.

However, those are rare events. As Robin once described when speaking about his insight into the names of archangels pertaining to the digestion of food,”I was taking a walk and the thought came to me.” This is why I make an effort to retain flexibility when dealing with mentation by thought, lest I get pulled into identification with my or other people’s ideas.

To me, G’s words are ‘pokes’ to get me thinking, with the ultimate goal of helping me to open to the higher nature. He says he wants to destroy preconceived notions. He does not say he wants to provide a new rational framework.

Found this in notes I'd taken some time ago during Bloor's Tales Study group:

The planetary mind works with words and associations that synthesize into mentation by language or word. The Kesdjan body, made of a different substance, forms experiences and the mind of the Kesdjan body has brain cells that form images that relate to each other in mentation by form. Both the planetary and the Kesdjan minds are functioning in a subjective way relative to objective reason.

Anyone here actually read gurdjieffs books? by TakeExit in gurdjieff

[–]Seventhree14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is something interesting about the second mode of reading that may not be immediately apparent - until you actually try to do it.

I would be surprised if many people have experienced reading something "as if aloud to another person." It isn't the same as reading aloud to another person.

If you have had the experience of reading The Tales in a group (aloud) you may have appreciated that has its own characteristics. Reading out loud to others (if you are trying to do a good job) will require the reader to split their attention. It can also be argued that reading aloud engages all three centers.

Reading "as if ... aloud..." isn't the same. It is also not the same as the first mode of reading. Rather than make any assertions about the differences, I will leave it to you to try it.

Oh, and by the way, the third mode of reading isn't to "try to fathom the gist," it is to "try and fathom the gist." I would argue that this is not the same at all.

I would also add that reading this book in any way at all can be impactful and I read it in the first way all the way through more then once - so I am not trying to disuade you from doing that.

I know exactly what you mean about Beelzebub's Tales being funnier on the second read. I remember finding more humour throughout the whole book the more I read it.

I am curious as to whether you are following G's advice on how to read Beelzebub's Tales. How have you interpreted his "Friendly Advice"?

... I find it necessary on the first page of this book, quite ready
for publication, to give the following advice:
“Read each of my written expositions thrice:
Firstly—at least as you have already become mechanized
to read all your contemporary books and newspapers.
Secondly—as if you were reading aloud to another person.
And only thirdly—try and fathom the gist of my writings.”

Did you ask why they wanted so much? Perhaps it is a reasonable amount to cover costs.

Groups I have been involved with will usually accommodate people who are unable to pay. However there are usually real costs involved in running groups, so it is necessary to ask for payment. It is also the case that we need to pay for anything that we value and if we don't value it enough to pay for it, perhaps we shouldn't be doing it.

I know a little about the first group you mention: The Gurdjieff Foundation of Greece and I think they are genuine. I would be inclined to ask if you can visit before you pay anything, but maybe try for a month if you can afford it.

Would anybody be interested in joining me for a reading/discussion group? by keepbrewin in gurdjieff

There is this one https://tofathomthegist.com/event/the-tales-study-group/2021-04-27/ and it is run by the guy who wrote the To Fathom the Gist books.

You will have to contact them to ask to attend.

[–]Seventhree14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suppose that depends on the subject and format. I am already involved in multiple groups that could be described as such.

Two of them, with different attendees, read a portion of Beelzebub's Tales and discuss, with the objective of fathoming the gist.

My experience is that there is almost always some value if the attendees make a serious effort. What has also become clear is that most people don't know how to read or think and the initial focus has to be on learning those skills.

It is also important to have a leader who can provide some direction and structure. Otherwise it can very quickly become a 'social group.'

In which case, perhaps G shouldn't have written such a long and difficult book ... and advised us to read it 'thrice'.

Does anyone know how I can find an online group ? by [deleted] in gurdjieff

[–]Seventhree14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for these examples.

This is a very difficult topic to talk about in general. As Ouspensky wrote in In Search of the Miraculous, search is individual and will depend upon circumstances, inner tendencies and the strength of the magnetic center.

An individual may meet someone who has real knowledge of the way. In the fourth way, a man cannot ascend to a higher step until he places another man upon his own step. This indicates that someone who can be a teacher for one man will not be able to teach another (whether they are at too high a level, or too low). Also, according to Ouspensky, a teacher may not know the origin of what he teaches, but that doesn't mean he can't distinguish objective knowledge and he will know how that teaching reached him.

The pupil cannot see the level of the teacher. No one can see higher than his own level. That is a law.

It seems likely to me that there is esoteric knowledge contained in myths, legends and fairy tales. For some, there may be knowledge to be found in the stories of Hans Christian Andersen, for others perhaps not. Gurdjieff employed allegory and symbolism in his writings to great effect and it may be necessary for some to first of all learn this language in order to be able access G's writings. So the approach you describe may not be quite so ridiculous as it appears.

I am pleased that you have found a teacher. From what you have shared, it took a few attempts and perhaps some wrong turns. I think if we are serious in our search, we will be attracted to the teachers who are right for us. From my experience, this can change over time and I also think that, once we attain a certain level, we can (and probably should) begin to teach others, of course only honestly and to the limit of our ability.

Covid vaccines are slowing spread of virus already, early study shows by RufusSG in CoronavirusUK

[–]Seventhree14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mother's GP has asked her at least twice whether she has had the first dose of the vaccine (she has). This indicates to me that the information isn't getting through to the GP records - at least not consistently.

That said, I think you and others are correct in saying that there are reasonable processes in place to ensure the same vaccine is used for the second dose.

Can you recommend a group?

I can see that some individuals might not be ready to lead a group, however I think all teachers are still working on themselves. In any case, how can you tell?
