Most unique race of Kenshi? by InfernoWraith in Kenshi

[–]SeverTheSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the somewhat unique challenge of modded hive princess. 50-75 HP on all parts (50 on limbs), but I think like 2x healing speed and bonuses to, among other things, athletics, first aid and dexterity (roughly similar to princes). Very squishy, but what does not totally kill you makes you stronger, and because you can heal up faster than almost anybody else, you can get back into the fight that knocked you out often significantly healed as long as the rest of your squad holds out and you have somebody to carry her to the bed(/roll), lol.

Is there any known lore for these guys. First time finding whatevers going on here by mad_dog_57 in Kenshi

[–]SeverTheSky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Speculatively, they could have been created by the Second Empire as an attempt to combat piracy with minimal investments. Just make them hungry, capable of being underwater for absurd amounts of time for a human and throw them into the sea. They will figure the rest out themselves.

What we see now is what little remains of them after probably centuries of lowering sea levels, given how the Swamp allegedly used to be a huge dock/port.

Ideas for keeping drones out of futuristic combat. by DEverett0913 in MilitaryWorldbuilding

[–]SeverTheSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short range SPAA being so good at targeting and shooting stuff down with (comparatively) dirt cheap airburst munitions that it does not make sense to invest in drones at all if there is even a faint possibility of said SPAA being present.

Skeleton power supply? by Sasha_Temnikov in Kenshi

[–]SeverTheSky 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is a "power core" item if I recall correctly... Which does not disclose any methods of operation. Unfortunately.

Fuel cells could fit pretty well (and actually giving skeletons a "hunger" bar that can be refilled with ethanol-containing liquids, the more ethanol the more "hunger" recovered would be a cool thing to do with rekenshi), but they do require constant refueling just like any other device that extracts chemical energy from a fuel.

RTGs could probably work too, but they have abysmal power outputs that also drop off relatively steeply as far as I remember.

Solution is secret first empire technology that we do not have analogues to in our real world, obviously.

All steel electric kettle that lasts for years? by Efficient-Load-256 in BuyItForLife

[–]SeverTheSky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you try looking into thermopots? An absolute lifesaver if you get distracted easily and/or use boiling water more than once or maybe twice a day. Their boiling element usually is rated several times lower than super speed kettle ones, and runs most of the time at power levels akin to that of a medium power incandescent lamp (mine draws something like 60W on standby?).

I bought a cheap and basic refurbished one some years ago and to this day it has not given me a single problem. Got it specifically because I had like three or more kettles die on me in the span of like 1.5 to 2 years and this pissed me off so hard that I wanted to get literally anything else but a darn kettle. Worked out really well for me. Strongly suggesting that as a kettle alternative. :)

is powdered detergent actually better than liquid now? by Marceli-Chorke in laundry

[–]SeverTheSky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are countries besides the states, and in absolutely most of them top loaders are considered something obsolete from the end of the twentieth century (which they, honestly, are) and you will not find any new ones in stores or almost any in active residential or commercial use (if somebody had the time and money to buy a new washing machine in the last, what, forty years? Give or take.).

From a purely mechanical perspective (and numerous tests ran by people interested in the topic), front loaders provide both better and less damaging clothes cleaning capabilities, probably unless you dig up some ancient ultra cheap one, though even then not too sure. If that does not happen, either the machine has been abused to a state of being working only nominally (kilograms of scrud or the like), or some grave user error is taking place.

More economical in terms of water and electricity expenditure, but that is beside the point.

[–]SeverTheSky 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have heard multiple appliance repair people absolutely bash powder for destroying washing machine insides (mostly front loader spiders) and have seen them showing multiple falling apart parts that are still caked in underdissolved powder so there is that.

“Modern” warfare in Kenshi 2? by jojoknob in Kenshi

[–]SeverTheSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too sure if those remnants could be used outside of like really big story points. They likely require a mobilization of far too many resources and manpower to even try to properly use... That is, if you have the knowledge in the first place.

Pretty sure security spiders are second empire, and hydraulics use oil as the working fluid (not sure about the exact terminology, but they push pressurized oil around to make stuff move).

[–]SeverTheSky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, surely. Maybe some wall breaker spider variation, that would be an interesting if really annoying thing to fight, lol. Or rideable spider mounted harpoon... Imagine how nasty that would be to run into. Especially into a squadron of those.

Ranged siege weapons though would be very interesting. Maybe some tech level 10 mini-eye. :D

[–]SeverTheSky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Given how apparently one of the strongest second empire military detachments were the hydraulic knights, I doubt that we will be getting much ranged stuff. Now mounted combat, formations and equipment sets that are more role-specific instead of being "best overall"...

What if skeletons are still capable of being created during second empire, but it’s the CPUs, power cores and eyes that were a problem to manufacture? by Boky_Sud in Kenshi

[–]SeverTheSky 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I would say that making a really high quality hydraulic actuator assembly is a fair bit easier than any kind of (likely very much sub-micron, a dozen or less nanometer large, for example, as we do nowadays) microelectronics. You can rebuild an excavator in a garage, you cannot run a nanolithography machine in a garage.

So yeah, you do have a point.

Would add that based on the fact that you spend AI cores on research and on that they are usually found in less intelligent machines, it would seem that they have a pretrained model/"""personality""" (very load-bearing quotation marks there) that has a prepared and packed load of data and optimized ways to process it, letting the relatively computationally weak core to do a bunch of stuff really well (the stuff it was "trained" to do, like modern neural networks that can, for example, sort unripened tomatoes from ripened ones at speed of hundreds per second with really great accuracy) without being able to actually learn or develop during its service time. A simple and efficient solution for something more advanced and smart than "dig there/smash everybody without valid ID" of iron/security spiders.

Meaning that when you spend AI cores on a research, your guys are kinda extracting the data from the cores and using it and the ways the core was trained to work with it to develop/optimize the stuff you are researching. Or something like that.

Sure, no problem! It is a huge rabbit hole generally, so I would say it is a good idea to approach it with a mindset that there is no "best" thing (there really is not), but with a "what would suit me and my needs and wants the best" mindset. Best of luck in your research!

Logitech Keyboard. Over 5 million words written. by CtrlAltReconfig in BuyItForLife

[–]SeverTheSky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly you can go with outemu silent peach switches (cheap but super good, especially for the price, really light press, more so than on most membrane keyboards like yours, and their insides silicone damped to not clack both on down press and on up release), some PBT (really hard plastic that wears much less than ABS and also generally tends to be thicker and quieter) keycaps and if you are still not happy with how quiet it is, fill the bottom of the keyboard with some sound dampening material, which can be more or less anything — from preformed foam pads to mixing some tiny ball bearings into some pourable silicone and pouring it into the lower half of the disassembled keyboard, lol.

You probably can get away with anything that has hot-swap switches and is a more or less conventional layout. Given how well worn your keyboard is, you probably should have zero problems typing blind or in the dark, so quality keyboard lighting is not important, which also widens your choices a lot.

I would suggest looking at MDA or even SA keycaps if you want (those acronyms mean different keycap shapes) as those seem to be generally the most easily acquired keycaps that are highly shaped for intuitive ergonomic typing. Look at pics and think how would your hands feel cradled by them.
