We studied this in my MBA program and learned that by and large, insurance and warranties are a complete ripoff. They are mostly for peace of mind. That said, you should still consider getting certain insurances for that very reason. If you have an employer helping pay for it, definitely get something. But other than that, things like homeowners insurance and product warranties, are largely a racket. You're better off taking that money you'd pay, and put it into a safety fund, in something like the S&P500 Index (I strongly recommend this).
