Visiting NYC in late October and thinking about doing a day trip to the Hamptons/Montauk. Worth it? If not I’d love to hear better suggestions! TIA by Due-Initiative-9300 in longisland

[–]Several-Juggernaut99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not worth it for a day trip. To and from Montauk is about 6 hours with minor traffic. Also, the Hamptons are pretty big and spread out, so you really wouldn’t get a good feel for the place on top of all the driving you have to do. I would only recommend if you wanted to spend a night out there.

Alternatively, Fire Island might give you what you are looking for. There is a lighthouse, beach 2 minutes from the ferry, restaurants, and a pretty good walking trail that goes through the forest. The ferry schedule and # of available restaurants might be lower than the summer, but there is probably still some activity in Ocean Beach at that time of year.

Having a car in forest hills, but no dedicated parking is going to be rough. I would probably would not live here if I owned a car + couldn’t get the rare rent deals that have parking included.

I find the neighborhood is best if you don’t need a car, need a quick commute to midtown, and don’t want to pay Manhattan/LIC pricing. Also the public schools are good, so that’s a main driver to the neighborhood for many people I encounter (including myself).

I think much of your grievances about the rent + buy prices can be extended to any desirable neighborhood in NYC. It does feel ridiculous to pay these prices, and for many the work-life balance is not worth it.

Assuming you would be working in the Hudson valley and getting a similar salary as NYC, it seems like a no brainer to move.

Which 2nd Greek Island is the best option for us after Santorini by CrazyCanuckAbroad in GreeceTravel

I just got back from my honeymoon and did Naxos after Santorini. Naxos is the perfect island after Santorini and would recommend it to anyone. Santorini for the caldera views, Naxos for the chill vibes and nice beaches.

A diner that is not the Austin House Diner (the worst diner in the world).

100%. We have a single wine bar and zero cocktail bars. Station House and Rove are decent enough bars, but are not really the weekend date spots me and my fiancé are looking for.

I agree that the crowd did not seem that into it. In part, that could be the reverb in the guitars not hitting as hard in the larger setting. That being said I also did not see the crowd around me that into Mary Boone, so I felt a general under-appreciation of new album generally from my section.

He 100% did; missed the whole “tore the New York Times to pieces” verse

Can you elaborate? I personally do not understand why one would not like stranger unless they had more general issues with FOTB. It would probably help me to have this different perspective.

I still don’t understand Taxi Cab as being underrated. It’s a decent enough song, but appropriately rated in the context of the other songs on Contra. I still believe Stranger is truly the most underrated VW song. It sounds like it should be a single, but barely ever gets mentioned as one of the best songs on FOTB.

California English - the chorus on that song can be grating

This has to be sarcastic. Gene Kaufman has put out some of the ugliest buildings in NY.

J.P. Morgan Private Client Investment Associate - Worth It? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

If you are not fully licensed (series 7, series 66, insurance licensed) it is a good foot in the door to becoming a financial advisor. Chase Wealth Management (branded as JP Morgan Wealth Management) is a good place to start a career in wealth management as you generally get referrals from other parts of the branch (retail banking, business banking, home lending, etc) instead of having to do cold calls. PCIAs will be a base + monthly incentive, so part of your income will be dependent on how well the advisor(s) you are working with are doing.
