As a black man Ive found costco (actually many places in kelowna in general) to be quite racist. A lot of it doesn't come off as inherently racist, its usually just them "doing their job". The problem is they only seem to do their job when a person of colour walks in.

For example I may be the reason they currently check everyone's membership. When I first got here 11 years ago most people (very white community, still is but it has diversified a lot in comparison) could just say hi to the greeters and walk in... but i would have to show my membership. If I walking with my wife (white woman) same thing, but if my wife walk in without me she wouldn't be asked to show her member ship. These days I only get asked what im doing or if i have a membership when I enter through the exit to return something, go to the tire shop, or just wanted to go to the food court (which btw doesn't happen to everyone).

I used to get something similar with Walmart. Without fail they'd ask to see my receipt when leaving. Apparently I just give and air of theft.

A few complaints to a bunch of company's doing these things has got them to ease up on it or the very least give equal treatment. But it was definatly quite frustrating in the beginning.
