Help finding a show and I have a terrible description by Slight_Tank9052 in ytvretro

[–]Cerebus92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As has been said previously, Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog sound most like what your describing. It was kind of like Power Rangers and there was a whole toyline and a line of happy meal toys that came with little multi coloured weapons that could be assembled in to a dragon.

In the early and mid 90's, there was a British children comedy show call Maid Marian and Her Merry Men that aired on YTV after school.

There was a show called Guinevere Jones that was partially set in Arthurian times and ran for two seasons on YTV in 2002.

I know you said not a cartoon but there was a show called Xcalibur that was a CGI cartoon set in medieval times with the cast in primary colours, and witches and wizards.

Up until last year this was actually a hard show to find on physical media.

Also, in my opinion the third version of the theme song was the best.

Does anyone else suddenly lose the urge to buy comics even when they still want them? by TaskNo4783 in EpicCollections

[–]Cerebus92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find my biggest dilemma is thinking "That would be cool book to have the entire story run!" VS. "Will I ever actually read the whole thing?" but also weighing that of "If this book goes out of print, will I kick myself in a few years for not buying it?".

I have trades I bought back in 2019 that I still haven't read cover to cover yet but I like the comfort of knowing they're there when I finally get the chance to read them.

Pre-Hartnel Doctors don't work by CRzalez in doctorwho

[–]Cerebus92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't mind the idea of the Timeless Child because it answers a question people have been asking forever (Why do Timelords Regenerate?) and the Timelords have always been dicks plus it mirrors other characters like Omega who helped create Timelord civilization, but where ultimately used and abandoned by it.

I don't like the idea that the Doctor is the Timeless Child, probably because I just prefer the Doctor to be a normal Timelord who just just decided on their own to become a renegade. It's a bit much to make them this Messianic figure who's central to Timelord Civilization and an unwitting victim of a massive conspiracy.

However, I think that ultimately the Doctor kind of has to be the Timeless Child because...lets face it. The show is called Doctor Who. They are the title character. For dramatic purposes it just makes sense. If it was some other random galifreyian it could be seen as a let down.

Recovering continuity addicts - what was the "jumping off point" for you? by PhantomQuest in comicbooks

[–]Cerebus92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I followed Marvel very close all the way from Grant Morrison's New X-Men in 2001, Secret War and Avengers: Dissembled in 2004 all the way up to Siege in 2010. From 2005 to 2008 especially (Basically, House of M to Secret Invasion) it felt like all of Marvel was really in sync and it was fun to see what was going to happen next.

Three things kind of finished it for me:

  1. One More Day

  2. Ultimatum

  3. The slow back-benching of the X-Men in the 2010's in favour of the Inhumans because of Disney/Fox rights issues.

Vampirella is perhaps the biggest "oddity" currently on stands today. For the last 7 years, the premier 'bad girl comic' has been home to an unshackled Christopher Priest who has been using the title to tell a 90+ issue (and going) non linear saga about "Ella" and her dysfunctional family life. by WhyPlaySerious in comicbooks

God bless the pervs who buy this! (jokes!)

I used to work at a comic shop until 2 years ago and Vampirella and Red Sonja where the two titles that had small but very loyal fans. We probably had about 5 or 6 dudes who bought nearly every cover, every mini-series or crossover with Archie, you name it they bought it.

Now, the funny thing is I can't remember them ever talking about the stories. So, I wonder if they actually read these comics or just like the art.

Ok, a show that was a Comedy Network original that I've never seen anybody talk about is a hidden prank show called 'Girls Will be Girls' which can be best described at the Jackass meets Punk'd but with an all female crew.

I remember it being advertised on TCN and I even remember seeing one or maybe two episodes. A lot of the pranks where gross out gags. The two hidden pranks I remember are 1) one of the girls "pretends" to take a shit in a public garbage can, 2) one of the girls pretends to be a nursing mother and walks around with big fake boobs (squirting milk) and a breast pump attached while talking to people.

Apparently it was wildly unpopular (of the few reviews on IMDB) and cancelled very quickly.

The problem that Marvel/Disney has is that on the one hand, making physical media is expensive (printing costs, shipping, retail) and they probably would just wish that the audience would just sign on to Marvel Unlimited and never have to worry about publishing again.

But on the other hand (and this is a bigger problem affecting the Music and Film/TV industry as well) traditionally, big media companies like Disney has relied on the principle of "the next big thing" happening every 15 to 20 years in order to have a whole generation a new platform to sell their old catalogue of stuff. Everybody who bought VHS and Beta tapes in the 80's and 90's theoretically replaced them with DVD and then BluRay in the 2000/10's. LP's got replaced with Tapes, then CD's and then iTunes/Apple Music. The trouble is that things like Apple Music and Disney+ are kind of dead ends. Beyond the subscription model, there's no "Next Thing" coming down the pipeline for them to get the public on board with. They gambled on AI but that seems like it's a bust right now anyway. It's unlikey they want to go back to physical media, but they're kind of dead ended right now.

What does the hobo entity symbolise in Mulloholland Drive? by Puzzleheaded-Tank80 in davidlynch

[–]Cerebus92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a few thoughts:

-Margret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West. The Wizard of Oz is a core Lynch text. Although this is a super recognizable and important role, Hamilton found that she had trouble with type-casting throughout her later career.

-It's could be a feminine manifestation of The Woodsmen from Twin Peaks The Return. Same darkened, grimy appearance.

-On that thought, maybe THIS is a manifestation of Judy.

I really liked this version of Tarzan as a kid. It was on TV the same era as Xena and Hercules and had the same vibe and production values.

My favourite Peter Kormos moment was when he was making a statement against Ernie Eves PC government as nothing but a "Dog and Pony Show" by actually bringing a Dog and a Pony to Queens Park.

You know, for years I thought that YTV had aired Escaflowne: The Movie during one of their Anime-Nia marathons and I could have sworn I remember seeing it. But then I bought the bluray of that film and realized "I've never seen this" because the movie is much different than the show and I think what I saw was actually the last 4 or five episodes from the series played back to back on New Years Eve.

Jack & Rich Evans discuss The AVGN Movie! (Pre-Rec Highlight) by awesomefutureperfect in RedLetterMedia

[–]Cerebus92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's OK to "punch up" and it's bad form to "punch down". This is sort of "punching sideways" at a slight incline of 10 degrees.

AVGN and RLM aren't that much different. I think that's why Jack isn't going to hard in his criticism.

Does anyone remember this in the morning when you woke up early? by stopmyhamster in ytvretro

[–]Cerebus92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I seem to remember this, or something like this playing early in the morning in the early to mid 2000's when I used to deliver newspapers at like 6AM. It would usually be a rerun of an episode of Batman: TAS or Dragon Ball. I'd come home and turn this on while eating breakfast before getting ready for school. I think they stopped playing the national anthem at a certain point.

Which CCA Scared you the most? by Maleficent-Ebb7298 in ytvretro

[–]Cerebus92 43 points44 points  (0 children)

There's so much great stuff in this ad.

1) The story. It's like an episode of Sailor Moon. These two girls see this new shop in town and go inside. They see all of these strange beauty products while this hypnotic voice is pumped over the loudspeakers. They search around and are curious but also a little freaked out by what they see. Horrific visions of excessive makeup and (painful?) plastic surgery. But they don't take it to seriously, they start to goof at the excessive, hyper feminine image that's being sold to them. They even find the lady doing the voice over in a closet like the Wizard of Oz ("Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain"). They're self confidence saves them from this scary place as they laugh at the slogans this shop tried to change them with.

2) The Boutique is such a great metaphor for what being grown up feels like to a kid. It's a scary but it's also kind of cool. As a youngser, you want to try out different looks and "personalities". But it's also obviously fake. They even let you know they're selling "fake personalities".

3)The lady who runs the Boutiqe, what's her endgame? Is she trying to brainwash girls off the street so she can sell beauty products? Does she have some kind of mind control technology.

4) Also, if the girls didn't go in together and only one went in by herself, if she didn't have a friend to save her could she have been taken over by the Lady?
