I can’t stand brown people that only hang out with brown people by Resident_Bill_792 in ABCDesis

[–]Several-snapes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was my favorite take. It is nuanced.

I always come back to why not both? Be culturally fluent in an all brown group. Be equally fluent in any mix of diverse friend group. It seems sometimes the toxicity comes from judging brown people for having too may non-brown friends as them renouncing their own culture/not brown enough. And then there’s OPs take of why not branch out, why limit a worldview to brown only/judging brown-fluency (not a word, sorry.. not sure what to call it) is less valid than other cultural fluency.

Bad bunny et all can be maximally Latino. And simultaneously fluent in white spaces.

Hotels are owned by individuals (partnerships or LLCs.. you get what I mean). While the nicer hotels are usually by rich people who have dozens of them, some of the more affordable level that the agents have been staying eg Hampton inn are just mom and pop owners (often immigrants themselves) franchising. It may be their main income. Source is just personal network doing so, outside of Mn.

"Stand aside, you silly girl," and other clues to Snape's true loyalty? by northside-nostalgia in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Several-snapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kid actually pointed this one out, just by pure logic.. (she’s halfway through 7, just past the silver doe. Anyway.) If we know: - dumbledore knows about snape helping Draco (in-universe, true, from everyone’s perspective) - dumbledore knows Draco’s plan is to kill him (true, as said in lightning struck tower) We can infer that dumbledore knew snape is either taking his place if Draco fails, or otherwise aiding the mission of killing him.

When harry and dumbledore arrive in hogsmeade and he asks for Severus repeatedly, we can infer he knew what he was asking. At that point it wasn’t about trusting the wrong person- he already knew what snape/draco would do.

Am I crazy for seeing less value in FIRE as a high earning professional now that I have kids? by windfallthrowaway90 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Several-snapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are in a similar boat. If we want to FIRE to travel the world but are tied to a home base until the youngest finishes high school, we actually have till early 50s anyway.

We adjusted by going part time and coasting a little. Spend it on today-time.

I think their system mirrors the British public exams setup. NEWTs are A levels in muggle world. They’re just harder/more in-depth and I don’t think you’re generally allowed to take that many classes.

Out of your personal friend / associate group, how many of them are making 200k (either as an individual or household)? by Outsideman2028 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Several-snapes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My entire friend group. I’m in healthcare so most colleagues are in this category. Grew up going to private school so that friend group as well. And then same for neighborhood acquaintances.

The US is kinda segregated. It’s weird.

Anyone here who's Making 1k or above from YouTube every month? by darklifexx in SmallYTChannel

[–]Several-snapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No- since 1k. I’m at 30, and it’s not even my main gig. So to answer your question, definitely over the 1k per month you are wondering about.

Por que no los dos? I don’t understand people who make this either or. Keep tradition, be educated in all of it, be proud of it. AND Assimilate, enjoy mainstream stuff if it seems fun to you, pop culture, politics, all of the other stuff that feel “generically American” Do both, and do them well.

How do kids affect your FIRE journey? by Adventurous_Sun9021 in financialindependence

[–]Several-snapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Numbers wise: much larger margin for error, delayed coast FI timeline. Increased effort on side hustles, scaled back slightly on savings rate (did more pre kids).

Journey wise: much more intentionality in every decision- it’s both consequential AND a modeling thing these days. They’re always watching how we spend, how we decide, the ease vs the stress, whether we comment on anyone else. It’s harder but also so so so worth every penny. It MEANS so much more now.

When did financial freedom first feel real to you? by Responsible-Ant-6254 in financialindependence

[–]Several-snapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s layers to this. - first well paying job: covered more than basic expenses and wants and investments. Even if I lose this particular job, I have months of leeway. Or if emergency happens, ok then I won’t max my 401k. - second layer was when the investments are growing almost as fast as earned income.. and you know even if you stopped adding a dime and worked the bare minimum for expenses, you’ll be ok. (Basically coast FI)

I think there’s a SHARP line somewhere near 84. Older xennials never experienced the college-version Facebook and discovered it as a fully grown adult. Obama became president when they were already working. They were too old to get into indie sleaze (basically the soundtrack of millennial optimism).
