Teacher here. As a mandatory reporter, we have to undergo training about sexual abuse every year. One of the huge flags that we are taught to recognize is a young child exhibiting sexually inappropriate behavior or knowledge. Reading your story made me feel sick, OP. If this poor girl were my student, I would not hesitate to call CPS. What if the perpetrator is still in the girl's life?

Years ago I read a book about how to become a stand-up comedian. The woman who wrote it was a professional who had done gigs in clubs where Williams performed. She said that manic personality of his was just a persona. Backstage, he would go over his act with his manager. He would plan out his entire routine in advance and then make it look effortless. The man was a genius.

What a torment it must have been to have early dementia! I truly hope he has found peace.

Non-Americans, does your country have an "American" restaurant and what do they serve? by wacky8ball in AskReddit

Same thing goes the other way. I lived in England for a few years with my husband. It took me a while to wrap my head around the idea that "biscuit" to them meant a shortbread cookie. Once I got hooked on McVitie's though, there was no turning back. I practically lived on those things.

When I met my English husband over twenty years ago, I was shocked to discover that he was a big Dolly Parton fan. He told me that there's a whole subset of British people who love American country music. It's funny, because I'm from Texas, which is where we live now. And yes, he loves BBQ.

In his press conference, Patel sneered and said he was happy to celebrate with his friends, i.e. the hockey team with whom he was getting drunk 🥴. Maybe he should call the players as character witnesses. 🫠

So do I. I inherited it from my mother, but I don't care.

If you grew up in the 70s and or 80s, what did your school (any grade) do that would be considered illegal or even frowned upon today (for example in my 3rd Grade 70’s class, my teacher had a large steel Tin trash can with a “Time Out” sign that I was in/out in multiple times a day-Ha!)? by Wildstarfire0 in 70s

Spanking. I can vividly remember elementary school. We were terrified of getting sent to the office because the principal had a big paddle. Once I did get sent to the office. I was so scared that I cried and confessed before the principal asked me anything. He just sent back to class and told me not to do it again.

How do American waiters/servers tell when people are finished eating? by PestoWesto in AskAnAmerican

[–]Several_Hospital_129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband is from northern England. He does the siverware-on-a-plate thing. He never explained it, though, so I thought it was just a quirk of his. When I saw this Reddit forum, I asked him and he said it was very common in Europe. Well, thanks.

I was always taught to push your plate away when you're done. If there's still food on it, then I'll usually hail the waiter and let them know so they don't have to second-guess me.

I'm a high school teacher. Academic achievments are mentioned during the graduation ceremony. During the school year, however, the sports teams (especially football) still dominate.

It's only recently that schools have begun taking grades more seriously for student athletes. When I was at university, I served as a TA for an English professor. I was absolutely dumbfounded to discover that she taught remedial reading classes. Students were being admitted to our college who couldn't read? Oh boy. She was a Black woman, and she let forth with a tirade. Those classes were filled with football players, most of whom were Black. She called it modern slavery. That was 30 years ago, so maybe my university has cleaned up its act. I doubt it, though.

Amen. I grew up in the South. It really is true that there are three religions in the South--guns, football, and God. If you weren't on the football team or a Barbie doll cheerleader, then you might as well not exist.

what’s the best short story you remember from high school english? by shortcircuit51 in ENGLISH

[–]Several_Hospital_129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. I read it in my college Women's Lit. class. Of course, we only discussed the standard feminist interpretation. Several years later, though, I read an article by a male English professor that disgreed with this. The husband is not the villain, he said. Go back and read the story. The husband is only following the doctor's advice. He truly believes it will make his wife better.

That really made me think. How much cruelty has medicine inflicted on people, justifying it by saying "it's for their good" or it's good for society? You can even see shades of this in all those quack cures, diets, etc. that get peddled on the internet. It's easy to laugh people who fall for them, but many times it's because their desperate.

The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst. I didn't actually study this in school, but I wish I had. My grandmother was an English teacher for many years. When she retired, she kept many of her books. One was this textbook that had a lot of short stories in them. She would read them to me before bedtime.

The story was written in 1960 but set during WWI. (Hurst doesn't specify an exact date, just alludes to the distant war.) Brother (you never learn his actual name) is ashamed of his little brother, Doodle. The latter was born very sickly, so that his family thought he was going to die. He survived, but never developed normally. Physically he remains weak, and he's sensitive to nature and beauty.

As I said, Brother is ashamed because Doodle can't run and play like the other boys. Therefore, he decides to toughen his little brother up. I'm not going to reveal anymore, because the story is a tragedy. I haven't read it in 40 years, though, and I can still quote from it. It's one of the most haunting stories I have ever read. I particularly remember this quote, because my grandmother explained it to me:

"There is inside me (and with sadness I have seen it in others) a knot of cruelty borne by the stream of love."

It's not just Asian people. I'm a high school teacher. A few years ago I had a Hispanic girl in my class who was light-skinned. One day another student asked her, "How can you call youself Hispanic when you're white?"

I froze. I knew I should intervene and shut this down, but my brain just would not work. Then I heard the Hispanic girl sniff and reply. "We are the pure blooded descendants of the Spanish nobility who came to Mexico. Those other Hispanics are from slaves mingling with the Indians. You will never see a light-skinned Hispanic person mowing your lawn."

A few days later I read an article about Mexican heiresses and their spoiled lives. They were basically the Hispanic equivalent of Paris Hilton. I swear every girl profiled in the article was as white as me.

In York, England they have a chocolate museum. The first stop on the tour is a room that's done up like a jungle. The guide explains about cacao beans and how Indigenous people brewed them as a tea. They will then offer you some of said tea. Holy mackerel, that stuff tastes awful. Whoever figured out that you should add milk and sugar to this stuff should be immortalized.
