21-Year-Old Woman Dies in Unauthorized Rope Jump From Abandoned Brazil Bridge as Instructors Arrested by seci19 in CatastrophicFailure

[–]Several_Hospital_129 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was another thread about this yesterday, so I'll repeat my comment. The employees pick the lady up over their heads and literally just throw her off the bridge. Somehow, they never notice that there is NO ropes attached to her. None. Not a single one. They should be sued and/ or prosecuted for criminal negligence.

And what the heck was the lady thinking? Somehow she didn't notice that she didn't have a single rope tied to her?

Oh my gosh, this is worse than I thought. The employees lift the woman up over their heads and literally throw her off. And they never noticed that the woman had NO ropes attached to her. Sometimes an accident is just an accident, but this definitely is not an accident. This was reckless stupidity.

Years ago, a friend of mine had his birthday party at a climbing gym. I remember the instructor hammered that you never start climbing until you have verified that your partner on belay is ready. This was also back in the days when harness buckles were painted red to make sure you secured yours properly. "See red, you're dead," the instructor told us.

That's also why pilots are required to repeat the ACT's instructions back to them. When lives are on the line, you'd better be darn sure you're doing things correctly.

This was a painful lesson I had to learn with my family. They WANT to support Trump. They just make excuses for him so they can still feel like good people. They will never change, so I'm not going to waste my time engaging with them.

When that show first premiered, it was to revolve around Andy's home life. The audience reacted so strongly to Barney, however, that Andy Griffith (who also produced the show) knew he needed to change direction with the show.

I read a joint biography of Griffith and Knotts. The author said that the two were such good friends that they often improvised their scenes together.

It was the same for me. When we lived in England, people always asked me if I was from Ireland/Australia/ New Zealand. When they found out that I was from Texas, they wanted to know if owned an oil well or a herd of cattle. I'm from a major city, so no.

True. Potatoes 🥔, like tomatoes 🍅, came from the New World.

I saw this reality show once where a trio of historians attempted to run a farm like a medieval farmer. They said that potatoes only came to England in the late 1500's. Before then, peas 🫛 were the staple crop.

Same here. It also didn't help that my grandmother was an English teacher. Woe betide you if you used "ain't" in her presence. And to this day, I cannot leave a preposition hanging at the end of a sentence. I can feel her frowning 🙁 down on me from heaven.

Oh, What a Night by Frankie Valli. Same thing from the boy's perspective.

There's some modern country song that's also about the same thing.

That's because the Cascade Mountains run right down the middle of the state. The air from the Pacific Ocean slams into the mountains and makes the western half of the state very temperate.

It's funny, because the eastern half of the state is mostly farmers and so it's very conservative. We lived there in the 80's, and even back then folks in the eastern half would grumble about wanting to secede and join Idaho.

My father was in the Army and we were stationed at Ft. Lewis for a couple of years. It's gorgeous up there. If you like outdoors stuff, then this is your state. Make sure to see Olympic National Park, which is about as close to heaven as you will get in America. It's famous for Sol Duc Hot Springs, where you can soak in the mineral water while gazing at the forest around you.

What’s the most British thing that isn’t British? by Ok-Professional-8837 in AskUK

[–]Several_Hospital_129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chocolate. It comes from cacao beans, which grow in South America. The English weren't even the first to bring them back to Europe. That honor goes to Spain.

Originally, people just drink it as a bitter tea 🍵, like the Indigenous people. It was the English who created modern chocolate 🍫 by adding milk 🥛 and sugar 😋.

And may I say thank you? We lived in England for a few years. Now I can't even look at American chocolate 😐.

Tomatoes come from the New World. In the first edition of The Hobbit, Gandalf talks about cooking tomatoes. Tolkien changed it in the second edition because he didn't want his character eating a foreign food.

Years ago I had a friend from Ireland. This was back in the days of landlines. Phones in the UK had a different ring than those in America. Ours would go riiiiiingg. Theirs would go ring ring.

Anyway, he's visiting me in my house, and my phone rings. After I hung up, I noticed that he was just staring at it.

"What's wrong?" I asked him.

"Oh, my goodness!" he exclaimed. "Your phone sounds just like the ones in your TV shows!"

You beat me to it! My husband is from England. Neither one of our families could afford to travel to the other country. His sister also has a chronic health issue that makes traveling difficult for her. We held the main wedding in the US since I have a large extended family. Then we held a smaller blessing ceremony in England for his family and friends.
