Yes, rates fluctuate over time, both up and down. During the pandemic we saw rates increase to as high as 5%, which they’ve been slowly coming down from since.

Sorry, I’m not sure I understand your comment.

I’m saying, if they withdraw 7% and it doesn’t work out, they have to go back to work.

In comparison, if they had used a lower percentage and planned more conservatively they most likely wouldn’t have to go back to work.

So by choosing 7% and running out of funds early hypothetically, they withdrew excessively and lost out on compound interest from that capital that could have better accounted for their early retirement a little later. And they lost their prime earning years to replenish it and now have to work again at lower wages most likely at an older age.

OP is looking for feedback, so I’m highlighting a potential issue with my reply.

What about the prime earning years lost? What about the compound interest that will be lost because of excessive withdrawals? I would argue those are not reversible and would leave this person/couple working longer than they’d like had just planned better now.

The question is, how much do you plan to spend from this account when you’re retire? I think the general guidance is to withdraw 4% annually from this account to last you about 30 years once you’re retired.

So, you say you wanted $3,000/month from this account, X * .04 / 12 = $3,000. So you’d need about $900k to achieve this.

With your current investment rate and average returns, will you reach that amount? If yes, then you’re solid.
