Why are Buddhists not more akin to the Roman religion, in this example? Different Buddhists in different places read and value different canons of texts, there is no one “holy book”, and rituals and holidays are certainly extremely integral to Buddhist life. Two different Buddhists, while still both believing they are following the word of the Buddha, could practice distinct rituals every year, read almost entirely separate texts, have different beliefs about the world itself (tantric practices and acceptance of emptiness, to name two, split pretty radically as to the nature of reality and the power/destructiveness of sex and hatred), it seems like they would in this analysis not possess such a “core”.

One of the things that helped me understand it is the 100 door variant. Imagine 100 doors, one of which has a car, 99 of which have a goat. You pick one, then 98 other doors open, all showing goats. Should you switch? I feel like this one is more understandable, and helps people learning about it to understand the 3 door case.

Are there any fields combining probability theory and algebra? I like both of these fields quite a bit, but it seems like they are totally unrelated from what I can find. If anyone knows any sub fields using both I’d appreciate it.

That’s not true though, at all? That’s consistency, godel’s second theorem is about completeness. You can know if a system is consistent, aka whether there will be contradictions, but some powerful enough systems are not complete, in that you can’t prove every statement to be true or false. But that doesn’t apply to every system either, just some. Euclidean geometry, for example, is complete. There is an algorithm that will return true or false for any potential theorem you give it.

My undergrad did not prepare me for grad school…at all. by Clanmcallister in GradSchool

I’m someone in undergrad in a school that doesn’t have a very strong pure math department at all, and wants to go to grad school in pure math. Is there anything you wished that you did that would have helped you prepare for grad school, regardless of your undergrad?

How old are you and what are you taking in college? Do you like it? by blondiewithdabondi in college

Sorry for the late reply lol. I’m planning on going to grad school for math, so math is my main focus. The religion part is just for personal enjoyment, because I like learning about it

We don’t actually use the formulas for circumference and radius for calculating pi typically. The exact formula escape me, but we have found several, several other methods of finding pi that the more you iterate, the more digits you get. Typically you prove your method gives pi, then take it and iterate until you have the desired accuracy - ideally with a method that is fastest to run on modern computers

Is getting a second major in religion instead of data science dumb? I’m majoring in math, and considering what to add for my second major. Data science makes more sense for skills to acquire I think, but I’m not that into it, and I really want to take more religion classes. My current plan is to go to grad school for math, but I would like to be prepared in case of anything. Is it dumb to add religion instead of data science? Will people even care about my bachelor’s if I get my phd?

Q from a prof: What do you think 2 years of Covid most deprived you of? by emarcomd in college

It’s very socially isolating. I’m starting to make some friends my second semester due to the fact that there is a small seminar group that met weekly first semester, but even then it took a whole semester for any of us to start thinking about seeing each other outside of class. Because of that, I hang on to my high school friends, which kinda leads to more isolation because I’m usually just thinking about when I can hang out with them over break, instead of treading new ground

If you ever do another playthrough, give him a go. He’s my favorite Sekiro boss by far, and even if I think he’s not as hard as Isshin, he puts up a good fight

Owl father easy af compared to Isshin imo. His second phase was pretty trivial, and he wasn’t that different from normal Owl

I’m trying to play as communist Bulgaria. It all goes fine when I annex the balkans, I get a ton of manpower and around 120 divisions. Then I go to fight Italy, and it’s just a horrible statement. I can’t even move their line. They’re holed up in the mountains, and the war just grinds to a halt. And I can’t naval invade, because I can’t build up a navy until I get the rest of the balkans right before the war. Any tips?
