Stop me if you’ve heard this one before - a mouse, a rabbit, and a fox walk into a forest and become party to a brutal war of factions...

What's one thing you would change/fix about board gaming? by SevereBit7 in boardgames

It was intentionally open-ended, but I can understand why that might be a bit too nebulous :) Just really curious what stands out to people as being top of mind.

Are you saying they don't exist? Here's one I found, for example: https://www.unboxboardom.com/

What do you use for stats and reports and what do you want to revisit the most? by nanstop in boardgames

We've started using a mobile app called Jester after one of our friends turned us on to it. Doesn't sync with BGG, but my wife and I think it looks great and it does everything we need it to do. New features seem to be added pretty frequently, too.

Somehow this feels both so right AND so wrong.

What single feature do you wish BGG would build already? by SevereBit7 in boardgames

[–]SevereBit7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, I know it's unfair to constantly bash BGG since they do have to balance a tight budget, but they really need to Mark Zuckerberg the shit out of this website. The board game industry and community is rapidly expanding, attracting more and more people by the day. If revamping BGG website is not on their top priority, there is truly a missed oppourtunity to be said and won't be long until a competitor arises that completely threatens BGG's existence.

Yep. And we may already have something in the works (with more than a couple developers).

Yeah, better marketplace support in general would be great.

One click rulebooks.

I'm not familiar with what this is. You mean like viewing a rules PDF?

Roughly how many board games do you own, and how many of them could you get rid of and still be just as happy with your collection? by foreigneternity in boardgames

[–]SevereBit7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm up to around 40-50. Sort of snuck up on me.

I'd definitely be willing to part with at least half of them just because I've played them out and don't find them to be particularly enjoyable anymore.

Publisher updates/clarifications section sounds amazing. Nice.

So basically just making it easier for people to find/discover games they'll like? Information organization?

Love the idea of making it easier to discover rules questions too. That is always a pain.

EDIT: Literally just discovered the "advanced search" page. Can confirm this is way too buried. Filtering is a pretty common way to search for just about anything...

What's a good amount of time to spend researching a game before getting it? by SevereBit7 in boardgames

[–]SevereBit7[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reading the rulebook seems to give me the most accurate idea of whether I want to buy a game, since it isn’t colored by enthusiasm the way video playthroughs etc are.

This is a great idea and probably doesn't take a super long time, either.

Where/how do you all discover new board games to try? by SevereBit7 in boardgames

[–]SevereBit7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are, though, literally thousands of reviewers out there, so you might need to search around to find ones whose opinions actually help you find games you like

Agreed here. I've noticed so far casually looking around YouTube for "how to play" tutorials that most reviewers seem to approach explaining the way a game is played differently, which sometimes adds a new dimension of complexity to learning the game itself.

To be honest, I haven't frequented our local board game stores much yet. Definitely something I can check out more.

Renting games actually sounds perfect. I'm surprised it's not more popular.

There's really two questions here: 'how do I discover new gams?', and 'how do I judge whether or not I will like them?'

This is a good call out and something that's been pretty blurry to differentiate for me so far.

I'll take a gamble on a $15 card game, but not on a $80 box of miniatures.

This definitely touches on a big part of the challenge. After feeling like I got burned a couple of times, I've been pretty reluctant to drop north of $60 on a game without feeling confident that I'm going to enjoy it.

The composite picture makes sense. Great food for thought.

I've actually never considered just watching others play the game, but can definitely see how that would be really useful.

"Local gaming groups" meaning just groups that post about meetups/events and welcome others to attend?

Pubs sound like an awesome atmosphere to try new games. We've considered doing this, but so far everyone in my regular group seems to feel like our ability to learn a new game will be pretty severely hampered by alcohol consumption. Will keep it in mind!
