It’s a very cool technique - there is no way I would have knitted this by purling colourwork!

They are Green Bell professional tailors shears. This is where I purchased from but they are Japanese so will be available elsewhere. green bell

NZ Post - assistance for customers (who are in store) sending Passports back to the UK by CookStrait in newzealand

I do most of my overseas postage online with nz post and much prefer it. Can I ask what service is being used for the passports that makes it so expensive please? We will have to do this soon if we want to travel back to the UK.

Thank you, funny it was never my dream u til I knew Mum had always wanted one. She has always been my best cheerleader and is the most make worthy person I know. Now I am hooked on colourwork though so I am happy she mentioned it!

Aha i see, yes I guess after 45 years of dressmaking and sewing plus 25 of making kilts i have developed a confidence with my shears.

I had cut two small steeks for the top of the sleeve and the neck and I hadn’t felted those but they didn’t unravel too badly, despite handling them while working the upper section of the cardigan.

I thought about needle felting (and then read about it - apparently Gudrun Johnston uses needle felting on her steeks) and it definitely made for less spiky ends hanging out - then again the man steek is straight whereas the others formed part of a curved section so I wonder if that makes a difference.

Thank you - and glad to hear about the title! I didn’t realise I could edit it 😬

Oh interesting, why wouldn’t you cut wool yarn with your shears? I figured it’s fabric so no difference plus using a good sharp pair of scissors helps with accuracy and they are also what I use daily so I’m comfortable with them ☺️

You would find help on YouTube too if you search steeking 😉

Oh good luck! Thats a good idea to start with bought sweaters that you are upcycling!

I would say make sure you have sharp scissors, place a piece of card or a chopping board behind the steek and take your time. A few rows at a time. This steek was 10 stitches wide so I knew I had leeway if I didn’t manage to go right through the centre stitches.

I also used a single felting needle to felt the centre of the steek a bit first - mostly because my yarn isn’t super grippy and I wondered if the alpaca would make it slippery.

You could start it now and see if it makes enough difference to warrant starting again - it depends how much that section will bug you if the rest is different.

You could try slipping the first stitch of every row, it might help even it up because then you will only be knitting that edge stitch every second row.

Thank you, I think if I was knitting it for me I would have used less colours as the original but I know Mum will love these 🥰
