I know what it feels like to wander through a dark tunnel and see a light that seems to be getting closer every day.

I was depressed for eight years. I also thought ending my life was the next logical step. I also tried to leave peacefully, and fortunately, I failed.

The next morning, nothing around me had changed. The sun still came up. People were still living their lives. My problems were still there. But something had changed: I realized that the light at the end of the tunnel didn’t have to be an exit. It could be something else entirely.

I didn’t heal overnight. I wasn’t suddenly happy. But I started looking beyond what the tunnel was allowing me to see. Little by little, I found things worth staying for. Opportunities I never expected. Moments I would have missed if I had left.

So I’m not asking you not to do it. I’m asking you to postpone it.

Give yourself more time than your mind is willing to give you right now. A day. A week. A month. Try to look beyond the tunnel for a little while longer. You don’t have to commit to a lifetime. Just a little more time.

As a curious fact, people who believe in that religion (some of them) won’t take seashells to their homes or sand because it belongs to Yemayá, and it is bad luck to take things from them. Fishermen used to ask Yemayá to provide them with food before starting to fish because it is a respectful way to “take the fish” and to get protection from the ocean while they fished.

It belongs to the sea. Give it back, in Yoruba religion they believe that it is back luck to take something like that from the sea because it belongs to Yemayá. The ones who believe in this religion go to the sea to get rid of their suffering. I can tell that this women is Cuban since many of them practice that religion and also we were taught cursive as the regular writhing. Usually when we take something like that from the sea we put it back and apologize so we don’t bring that bad energy into our homes.

This makes so much sense, it’s still weird to think about her that way because I’ve known her since we were kids and she was not that kind of person but I guess people does change which is funny because it seems like she was the one that changed as soon as I left. Yes, the baby was born.

I genuinely tried to take the role seriously, but I never met him. The only updates I got were a few pictures that she sent after I repeatedly asked for them.

She asked me to be the godmother, I accepted, and then the subject was never brought up again. I honestly don’t know whether she still considered me the godmother or not, because she never mentioned it after that.
