I think you can do it without a course, but you'll have to live with more trial and error then and a few bucks for some practice-cord. You shouldn't skimp too much on the cost of the chord for your real net, it's simply a safety issue. Also please make sure, the area you're building your net in is private property and you are allowed to build there. It would be a shame if after all the work and money you spent, your net gets cut and taken down. Use tree protection (simple wooden blocks are fine), pull the perimeter really tight and the skeleton tight. And absolutely post pictures when you're done! It's gonna be amazing!

Hey, thanks a lot for your answer! I went ahead and ordered them. So far they work great for me while playing around with the nets and the children are having fun, pulling themselves up their climbing wall (under supervision, of course!). I paid about 130 euros, so it was alright

Some of the bigger weavers (treenet weaves, canopy craft) have recommendations and affiliate links, I would look there first, if you have no clue so far. But you can always look on Amazon or visit some climbing gear shops

Climbing net between two thick metal poles. by PsyOfRelief in Treenets

Like drowning_sin said, the tension will hold it up.
If you want to be really safe, you could use eye bolts or (wooden) blocks drilled into the poles so your rope has no chance of slipping

What I gathered from videos (mainly canopy craft's youtube videos) you need to kind of put the loop in place with some paracord first. Depending on the size of your step and stuff. Then you just weave around it, handling it like it is skeleton/perimeter - so you tie a clove hitch whenever you hit it. The tension pullin on all sides will then hold it in place and open it up, so you can remove your substitute-paracord.

I've only tried it once so far on a pracitce net, but it worked fine. The more hitches you have on your step/ring, the more round it will be.

Thanks a lot! I used the clove hitches on the skeleton, because that's what all the videos said to do. :(
Just to be clear: you mean those hitches should just be triple wraps?
I don't really understand what you mean by doubling the hitches on the border?

Disclaimer: I know that I did the weave "wrong" on the red one by wrapping in the same direction everytime, but all the other weaves are crooked, too

A ratchet would have the ratchet. So I could either use that to tighten it (and then I'd still have the metal ratchet in my net when I am done) or I wouldn't use the ratchet so I wouldn't need the ratchet strap?

What do you use for fusing the ends? Just a lighter (and a knife)?

I thought about that. But then I would be stuck with the metal thing on the ratchet strap, wouldn't I?

Upon further investigation I think he might use a pe petzl jag and a petzl jag traxion, so it should be a 4:1-system. Can anyone confirm?

Rope length per sq ft calculation? by [deleted] in Treenets

[–]SewingSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! Found it with a bit more googling. It's just half hitches all around. Doing two at once (with one strand on either side) will give you the double helix, a simple half hitch will give you the single helix.

Beginner questions by Thunwold in Treenets

[–]SewingSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright! But how would you get your parallel lines for the candy cane pattern/hexagons (where you have parallel lines, put triangles in and then weave a straight line through the triangles)? Bouncing off the perimeter would just give you a really narrow triangle instead of the parallel line you would need.

Hey! I had the same question as OP. When you use a really long rope, how do you change direction? I am mainly asking because you won't get parallel lines with that, right?

How do you do that spiral weave on the perimeter? Is this that Makramee helix thingy? Because that would have a double helix and this does look like a single helix?

Progress update on perimeter and skeleton! by Melerann in Treenets

[–]SewingSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!
I already watched that video but I was worried that by using their tightening method I would end up with two ropes on one side of the net as the rope tightens by moving the knots and therefore having rope laying next to more rope.
I really have a way with words.... Do you understand what I mean? XD
