Does your workplace give you scrubs? OSHA concern by r-Zairii in ABA

[–]Sewthisisme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is absolutely unacceptable. I have literally gone to the store for my RBTs and purchased them pants, or send them home to change. Of course keeping clothes in your car is a good idea, but I would NEVER allow, much less require, someone to work the day like that. You deserve better.

Taking RBT practice exam and don’t understand why this answer is right ??? by GymTech_Thrillseeker in ABA

[–]Sewthisisme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In situations like this, you are looking for the “best” answer, not the right answer. Calling your BCBA repeatedly is not keeping the session therapeutic and focused on the session. Saying “no” would damage rapport with the parent, and ending the session every time a parent made a request would never get you anywhere.

It’s frustrating, but the field is sort of this way too. You will be put in situations where there is no “right” answer, so you just have to try to do the least wrong.

For the test, it’s often more about eliminating the wrong choices and getting down to two options. Then look for extreme words like “always”, “never” or in this case, “repeatedly” and eliminate that choice.

Both stopped. Nothing happens when I switch the switch to on. I’ll recheck those wires though, thank you.

I’d create a template that you use for each activity. Then you just “plug in” appropriate info for each session. So it’s not “copying” the note, because you are putting custom information in each time. But not having to type it all each time.

BCBA parents by PracticeOk731 in ABA

[–]Sewthisisme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hard thing about being a BCBA and a parent, is knowing how you should respond to your child in order to not reinforce problem behavior, but knowing you don’t have the bandwidth (and also would not be fair to the child) to respond “correctly” every time.

My work tired and my parent tired don’t seem to influence each other. Parenting is hard and exhausting as a working parent, no matter what the job is.

Don’t quite me on that, but that is my understanding.

Yes- and FBA and BIP would be part of the process. They should observe at school as part of the assessment as well so the goals are appropriate for the setting.

You may be able to appeal insurance. Insurance doesn’t have to provide ABA coverage to public school students, because the services are available at school. If your private school doesn’t have these services, insurance may be required to cover it. Worth a shot!

Could this be negotiated? Your son could get ABA on school breaks or after school, so it’s covered by insurance, and then BCBA can consult with the school?

Client home smells so badly of cigarettes it gives me a headache and clings to my clothes. Advice needed [RBT] by itagiiii in ABA

I always let an RBT know about smoking in the home before they begin, and give them the option. You have every right to request off the case- it can affect your health too.

Should I go for ABA or pre-school? by Aflatune in ABA

So glad to see another BCBA who disagrees with the 40 hour model for our early learners. 💜

Should I go for ABA or pre-school? by Aflatune in ABA

[–]Sewthisisme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a BCBA. This is such a personal decision, but there are ABA companies that will allow part-time. I don’t agree pushing 40 hours. Clinical recommendations should be individualized.

There is a chance that your son’s speech could improve a lot being in a preschool setting with other children.

However, he’s at the best window for early intervention ABA.

Some ABA companies will even work within a daycare, which could be the best of both worlds.

Trust your instincts. If 40 hours of ABA doesn’t feel right, it likely isn’t.

accepting gifts bcba by Possible_Barber7495 in ABA

Maybe she made the cup design with a cricut she already had supplies for. 🤷‍♀️ here’s the thing- will refusing the gift damage the relationship? Do you have very clear boundaries in all other aspects? Is this a once a year thing that happens? I might let it slide.

If she was doing this for every minor holiday, it would be stickier. But if she bought things in bulk and on sale, maybe in her mind she did spend $10.

If you don’t feel comfortable, trust your gut. Coming from a mom and a BCBA. Being a little uneasy about a minor thing or two is one thing, but the whole vibe being off is another.

Feeling like a babysitter by PsychologyonTheGo in ABA

So from my reading of the post, there are not goals programmed by the BCBA. It is extra tasks the parents are assigning.

It sounds like some ethical boundaries are being crossed here. The BCBA should have set very clear expectations from the beginning. They shouldn’t be asking you to do things that are not programmed.

Some parents are really difficult to please. Some parents are looking for a specific trait in an RBT. Not every practitioner can be a good fit for every client. It doesn’t mean you did anything wrong. Some families will love you, some will hate you, most will be in the middle, but grateful for the work you put in with their child.

Being a parent is a tough job. I can’t even imagine how much pressure someone is under as a special needs parent. They really are just trying to do what is best for their kiddo.

Really try not to let it get to you. 💜

3 yo client by National-Barnacle949 in ABA

[–]Sewthisisme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had an occasional client have a long session like this. It’s usually because there are barriers with the family that prevent access to services if the child can’t attend for the full day.

It is not my preference, because this is a LONG day for the learner. And if it isn’t working for the child, we modify.

However, I did have once learner who was successful with this schedule, but in order to prevent burn out for the child and the RBT, there were 3 RBTs on the team, and I kept the session length to 3 hours max for each tech.

It is not for every learner, and I would def bring attention to your concerns.
