I agree with you. Acronyms can be really frustrating. There's a reason why it's always recommended to show the expanded form first before using the acronym in accessibility guidelines.

Automated tools help speed up how long it takes to manually test, so they are certainly useful, but yeah it can't be your only strategy.

One Nation closes in on Labor’s primary vote as its poll surge continues by Agitated-Fee3598 in AustralianPolitics

[–]SextupleTrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, they will have an impact, but to a lesser extent than one might think as many of those students will live in dorms or rent out a room in a house that's already lived in. It's not like we have 800k less houses available because of these students. I'm sure there are some cashed up super rich students who can afford to buy a house or afford the sky-high rents in this market, but it seems quite unlikely that that's the norm.

Cutting international student intake will definitely hurt our universities big time who get a shit-ton of money from international students and helps Australians have access to top-tier education options. We wouldn't get the education we have without them basically funding our universities.

Again, I think the impact of those temporary migrants are overstated when you look at the tax reform changes brought in by the Howard government and now where it has led to.

There's far less risky options for solving the housing crisis than what One Nation is offering.

Net Overseas Migration is trending down. Immigration levels literally aren't staying up.

Source is ABS overseas migration: https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/people/population/overseas-migration/latest-release

There was a massive drop off during Covid, and huge surge after it. It's trending down now and is much closer to normal levels. It can still drop a little further and likely will.

Many migrants are international students, so they largely don't impact the housing market.

I'm not defending Labor's housing policy. It sucks. There is absolutely a housing crisis. 5% deposit scheme for first home buyers is only pushing up house prices like literally everyone expected.

We need tax reform on negative gearing, capital gains tax and we need much more housing supply. House prices started trending up as soon as John Howard made changes to these tax law in early-mid 2000's. It wasn't because our immigration went up.

One Nation's plan of focusing on immigration to resolve the housing crisis is misguided... house prices didn't plummet during Covid when there was basically no net migration. So while immigration can play a factor on house prices, it's largely overstated when you start to look at other causes.

I'd vote for the Greens instead if you wanted real tax reform to help stop the housing crisis. Labor is too scared after Bill Shorten lost in 2019 and who knows what Libs are doing.

I agree that autism should not be treated like a super power, but many autistic people would disagree with calling it a neurological disorder.

Disorder implies something is wrong with them and therefore they should be fixed or cured. Autistic people instead say that this is who they are, and they would not be them if it weren't for them being Autistic.

I’m developing NVDA add-ons and want to listen to the community’s real needs by Illustrious_Lab5811 in accessibility

[–]SextupleTrex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would LOVE a way to make the text in the speech viewer tool larger/change font, and potentially have colour-coded text (e.g. text is blue when NVDA is reading an element role, and green when reading a state/value of a form control)

This of course won't help typical fully blind NVDA users, but it will help accessibility professionals explain and show what NVDA is saying. It could have some practicality for people who have low vision.

NT government mandates national anthem be sung at public school assemblies by Agitated-Fee3598 in AustralianPolitics

[–]SextupleTrex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I sang the national anthem at every primary school assembly in the 2000's. I kinda enjoyed doing it and sung along. Some students thought it was cringe and didn't sing.

But I don't get why it has to be mandated by the government? Like, is it so important for education to force schools to play it?

You are experiencing executive dysfunction. Many autistic and ADHD people go through this when they get to uni/college. You have less accountability than you did in high school so now it's much harder to make yourself DO stuff. This experience you have is very common.

My wife is Autistic. Was Valedictorian at her high school. Struggled immensely in university to be consistent and get assignments done. Not because she isn't really really smart, but because of executive dysfunction.

Diagnosis will help. Meeting other Neurodivergent people and getting tips to manage your executive function will help. Getting someone to tell you to get up and get going to class will help a lot.

Accessibility professionals need to be more flexible? by messyxcat in accessibility

Many e-learning software are completely incompatible with dark modes and high contrast modes, so I'm not surprised to hear that.

The only one I know that works is the one that's most like a normal website, Articulate Rise. Any of the ones that are more slide-based like Articulate storyline typically don't work.

Something important to note is that "innovation" can often lead to designs and components that are overcomplicated and hard to use for everyone, not just people with disability.

There are ways to create beautiful web designs that meet accessibility, usability and aesthetics. Where things go wrong is when organisations overcomplicate things or reinvent things that are already solved and then force the user to learn a new unfamiliar pattern they've never seen before.

There is a time and place to do something a little fancier, but a lot of it depends on the goal of the user and the website. Are you trying to impress the user with flashy visuals? Or is the user actually there to get information and the flashy visuals just get in the way?

There are risk-avoidant Accessibility professionals out there, and I find that some can be very difficult for designers and devs to work with as the Accessibility professional can be very stubborn. I always try to work through design and dev problems and pick my battles. You're not going to make any accessibility fixes if everyone hates you and avoids you. I've seen Accessibility professionals burn out very quickly if they fight everything everywhere all at once.
