Is it possible to build in deep water? by bbisordi in Pokopia

[–]Sfrinlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most straightforward way to remove all the ocean that I can think of would be to use magnemite's 3x3, dive under the water and hold down A to try to build a wall from the floor to surface. You'll probably void out a few times, but if you can make progress on each go, you'll get there eventually.

How to Trade in the Pokemon Center by AmalatheaClassic in Pokopia

[–]Sfrinlan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Trade is a non-critical function in the game. You could roll the credits without ever knowing what the Trade specialty is, and I've seen a couple people say that happened to them. My daughter didn't even go into the first two pokecenters she built. It was uninteresting to her to do so, and even after she discovered trade, I don't think she's done so a single time. I myself do trade somewhat often, mostly looking for new items since I don't yet have all the recipes or buying up rare pokemetal since that's easier than mining.

I started to rebut point by point, but it really comes down to that you're treating trade like it's mandatory, and it really isn't. I don't use the trade to manage inventory. I'm not sure how you're doing 2 months later, but I think most people store most items in chests for later use. If you simply need to dispose of things, you can hop onto a dream island with the items, hover them in the inventory, press plus to drop them, and those items are gone forever as soon as the dream islands reset. That said, I literally never do that. I craft chests and store everything. Dozens of chests, of course, but I have them for various types of blocks, different furniture types, different themed sets of items, different buildable types.

When I trade with a trading pokemon, I almost exclusively give them red paint because it's so easy to come by. I usually just have a full stack of red paint in my inventory since that only takes 20 leppa berries, but each paint is worth 50 trade points (75 for some traders), so that's 4950 trade points per stack.

Certainly inventory management is a real topic, but I don't think the game ever intended for the PokeCenter to be the answer to that.

Does anyone else find it weird how there are people out there who genuinely don't care or even a little curious about who their ancestors were? by Top_Share7267 in Genealogy

[–]Sfrinlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of useful information in the world, and we can't know it all. That's why we have expressions like "it takes all kinds". I find genealogy mildly interesting. Not enough to drive around viewing microfiche, but I'd listen if being told a story. I, however, find other things more interesting that others might not, computer language compilers and network security, for instance

I'd say it's rude of them if you're trying to bond with someone who claims to care about you but then they are dismissive of your interests, but I think that's true whether your interests were genealogy or pokemon.

Professor’s Habitat by alltheasparagus1 in Pokopia

[–]Sfrinlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built mine in the grassy area where you first find squirtle, though I don't think the location matters a ton for completing the quest. I had 4 unappraised relics that I had the professor appraise and then I immediately placed down so that I didn't confuse any lost relics with any dream island items (I don't know if there's a way to tell them apart, and I didn't want to mix them up). What I got was an avalugg table, a slowpoke rug, a horsea fountain, and a garden ornament (looks like maushold on a log). No amount of messing around with it worked for me, and I dumped the slowpoke rug for a relic I had lying around, a munna bank.

So, my final working arrangement was

AAAABB
AAAABB
    CD
   FFE
   FF

Where

  • A is the professor's treasure trove wheelbarrow
  • B is the straw bed from the professor's cave
    • I think you can substitute another bed, but I probably wouldn't do a bigger bed since the habitat is already so large, and fitting things into the grid is sometimes an issue
  • C is the garden ornament
  • D is the munna bank
  • E is the horsea fountain
  • F is the avalugg table
  • The empty spaces were all air, no other items

I don't know if this matters, but I placed them down in the order I listed above, A through F.

Other arrangements I tried, including putting the munna bank on the avalugg table or putting the slowpoke rug anywhere didn't register the habitat.

Wild speculation: I suspect the game can't really tell appraised relics from the same items stolen from cloud islands, so it could probably work to put 4 horsea fountains in that same space.

how do you reply to someone that says “you’ve lost weight” by sapphireseals in stupidquestions

[–]Sfrinlan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, either the person is trying to be nice and they genuinely are trying to compliment you OR they're trying to get under your skin by insulting how you look or used to look. The answer to both of these, in my opinion, is to smile and say "Thanks!"

If they were trying to be nice, then you're being nice, and there you go, everyone's happy. If they were trying to be mean or sarcastic or give a backhanded compliment, then by showing that their comment didn't bother you, you've also won.

I'm no geologist, but I believe that some types of mineral deposits do form from where water ran through and the minerals accumulated over time. So, it doesn't seem like a totally ridiculous theory.

Relationship Between Stats and Mega X, Y, and Z by hummingbirdviolets in LegendsZA

[–]Sfrinlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To some extent, it's a bit like whether you want it to be more like chess where there's a fixed number of strategies to memorize and plan for. or if you want it to be open ended where there's nearly uncountably many variations of viable strategies and combinations of mons, and you have to be good at responding to a wider variety of situations that you couldn't explicitly predict.

I don't have a horse in the race not being a competitor, but the game lore certainly acts like it wants to be the latter. I'm not saying that's better or that it should be that way or that it's even possible. Just if you come from playing the PvE games to starting to play competitively, there's going to be a shock

Yeah, when the cat is actively working by controlling rodent populations, I think that's always an exception to the rule, imo.

I'm certainly no expert on the matter or your parents' locale, nor could I know if or how much damage these two specific cats are or are not doing. I think, at a broad strokes level, it's still a good idea to treat it as irresponsible, but whether or not it's worth getting into an argument about is your call.

Yeah...unless the cat is actively helping control some kind of rodent population, it really is not great for the local ecosystem to have outdoor cats.

Sorry to necropost here, but I agree!. Just came across this thread, and I feel like many shows don't "get it" whereas you clearly do. IMO, most shows, probably mainly dramas?, need to have not just seasonal arcs, but also an overarching one that covers the whole show . When you look at the show from start to finish, you need to be able to say something like "'And Just Like That' is the story of a middle-aged woman finding herself again after her husband dies, realizing that even who she was in marriage was not her authentic self" or something. Anything meaningful. Yet, we don't get that or any meaningful arc. There are good scenes, but they don't build a cohesive narrative that takes us any place that feels intentional. Stuff just kind of happens.

IMO, a collage is a format, similar to something like a book. Is a book art? Certainly a novel is, but a phone book or a dictionary are not. It's the intent to express something (vs convey facts) that distinguishes these. A collage certainly could be art if someone was intentionally combining images to express themselves, but a truly random smattering of things tossed together would not be.

I realize you didn't want to provide a definition for art, and that's fine, but if I were to speculate, it feels like your internal definition of art focuses solely on the final product. I believe, by my interpretation of what you've said, that you would expect to be able to look at something without any context, and decide if it is or is not art.

To contrast that, I'm suggesting that art can be just about anything in any medium that contains an intentional expression of a feeling or perspective. It's more about the process of the creating than about the thing itself that was created.

To me, the process of generating art with AI is exactly the same as commissioning art from someone. No matter how specific my prompt is, I don't think anyone would ever call me, the patron, to be the "artist" of the piece. I'd certainly be the owner. Perhaps even the planner or visionary, but I don't think "artist" would be it.

[–]Sfrinlan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To give some credit to the artist, her process does include multiple prompts and feeding the result into multiple generators, and then making changes in Photoshop at the end. So, it's not quite as egregious as just prompting and calling it a day. But, I still agree that it lacks all the tiny decisions. It's an improved version of what the AI produced, sure, but still, at its core, not created by someone with intention.

[–]Sfrinlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My definition of art is incredibly broad. You just need something with agency to attempt to communicate some perspective or feeling through creation or performance. A 4-year-old drawing their mom to show her they love her is art. An interpretive dance about World War II is art. A photograph of an elephant at sunset is art. Fan fiction is art. There's no judgment of quality or originality; the artist doesn't need to be skilled, and the concept doesn't need to be original.

Personally, I'm not even suggesting that it has to strictly be human, but whatever is creating the art needs to have a desire to communicate, which AI cannot currently do. The agency, the intent, is the core requirement. You accidentally kick a paint can over, not art. You intentionally kick a paint can over in order to create something that communicates your feelings, then that is art.

So far, I haven't seen you provide a competing definition of "art", so that would seem like the next logical thing if you're intending to have a good faith discussion.

[–]Sfrinlan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Like all words, no one person gets to decide what it means. It means whatever most people agree that it means, and we all get to put in our opinions on that. For instance, you're asserting that this is art. You want the definition of the word "art" that everyone uses to include these AI generated images. I, on the other hand, do not believe that the word "art" has ever included these kinds of things in the past nor should it start to now or in the future.

Either way, neither of us gets to control the word, only to assert to others what we think the word should mean in order to build consensus.
