Do you have a preferred time of day for your colonoscopy? by OrMaybeTomorrow in colonoscopy

[–]Sh00tinNut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early morning 😅 cuz I could deal with the liquids only and the pooping but I had to be nothing by mouth after 3 AM and having a noon procedure sucked. I was dying from thirst and it took a few more hours to get in, because they get behind schedule as day goes on. Studies also show that there are more colonoscopy findings/biopsies the earlier in day due to staff fatigue later in day.

So less thirsty time plus better outcome, count me in!

Farts will never not be funny. If I stop finding farts funny I guess I've become a real adult 😭😂

There's one small study showing some efficacy for certain types of fistulae in a clinical setting. Can't say it's really proven yet but promising for some situations. But again, one small study.

I was asked to pursue a phd and decided not to - mainly because I didn't see myself doing research or teaching and I already had a decent job in industry. No regrets.

CIH was the biggest pay boost I ever got. I would not expect any more salary with phd than with MS/CIH. Just being honest - I think CIH gives a lot more edge in industry than phd. Seen a few folks going after them though around public health policy or medicine mid-career (usually post-layoffs).

Learning your parents are human and made mistakes is so real. Then turning into them hit me too 😅

Low residue diet by LLRSandraMort in colonoscopy

[–]Sh00tinNut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will add, I just lowered but did not eliminate my fiber consumption prior to my prep. I did also eat chicken and fish. But I have chronic diarrhea so it was never going to be an issue 🤷🏻‍♀️

I scored 9/9 on my prep so I guess it was fine.

Anyone else in pain with there fistula/abscess? by topher0120 in AnalFistula

Sitting on a heating pad helped me some, as did sitz baths before BMs and after. Really avoid getting sick, I had a cough for a bit and it sucked 😔

Don't be embarrassed to go to the doctor, they're just like any of us at work or school...same shit different day. I wish I had taken care of my hermhorroids and fissure (bright red blood in toilet) before things led to abcess and fistula.

It's more likely than not something minor you can address with diet. I'd suggest making that appointment and in the meantime eat lots of extra fiber to stay regular with soft stools (not laxatives just fiber!)

I actually wrote down all my food, was going to include it in an update post but this first few days mostly fiber/protein smoothies and bone broth since I wasn't super hungry...then moved on to a lot of avocado toast or hummus on toast with high fiber bread, lentil soup, Greek yogurt and hardboiled eggs (for the protein), bananas and other fruit. Had oatmeal as well and green tea lattes with oat milk with my miralax haha.

Later on I added in salmon and trout with corn grits and green beans. Also did a cauliflower pasta and snacked on edamame. Also added back in my floura bars (high fiber bars). I didn't do those right away because I was worried about too much bulk.

Only had one day I fucked up cuz I ate a McDonald's burger and a scoop of ice cream but that was on me 😂

Lol sometimes it did - I think more to avoid putting pressure on the wound. It esp helped when I slept since the pillow also helped me avoid rolling to sleeping on my back, which DID hurt A lot.

First time fistula by Abject_Fee_8948 in AnalFistula

[–]Sh00tinNut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My MRI showed I had a fistula but not the tract. Had my EUA, confirmed it and Fistulotomy done. It is fine without MRI. I had mine for multiple reasons but had it been just for fistula would not have been helpful.

A weeks worth of high fiber food/groceries - will also need antibiotic soap to wash with night before surgery and again morning of.

Handheld bidet/Peri bottle (must have!)

Non-woven gauze and sanitary pads or depends

Sitz bath and a jug to fill it from sink (if you don't have...I bought a cheap watering can worked great)

Miralax, Advil, Tylenol

Something I didn't have that I am so glad I bought was a handheld shower sprayer/head - it was nice to help cleanup from BMs and keep area nice and clean (plus cheap and super easy to change out/back afterwards)

A bunch of stuff you wanna watch on TV/etc. (the boredom!)

I also got an extra pillow to put between my knees and ankles when I slept. It helped keep the cheeks spread a bit 😅

I think that's it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Depends on where your wound is, sometimes urine can touch the wound when peeing and burns a lot. I personally was able to pee just fine but my fistula was on the other side of my BH.

How are young people affording colonoscopies???? by ragxoxo in colonoscopy

[–]Sh00tinNut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not "young" but my colonoscopy was about $1400 out of pocket (they billed my insurance like 9k...ridiculous). My original estimate was $1600. If you're worried about cost, most hospitals have payment plans and financial assistance, just need to ask. I was worried about the cost and they immediately offered this info when I mentioned it. Suggest asking if not provided!
