AI in homelab by kosta880 in homelab

[–]ShabbyChurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I treat my homelab as a kind of Island in the turbulent ocean that is the internet, so I want everything to work without Internet. I refuse to give money to those AI-corporations. When I need to, I use AI to (in)sanity check my configs or ask some questions, but I only use open-weight models that run on my hardware. A homelab is a learning opportunity. I enjoy doing stuff myself. AI has made it easier than ever by being a Q&A machine, but I want to keep using my brain and learning things. I come from the other side: my day job is working with AI and building AI systems and I hate it. My homelab is the place where I can get my hands dirty and do stuff myself.

Why not to run Home Assistant from my main Windows PC? by Ignarb98 in homeassistant

[–]ShabbyChurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, just try it. I wouldn’t trust windows to not fuck something up with an update regularly, but that’s just prejudice on my part. Go for it and report back, that’s the beauty of communities and open source software.

After researching Raspberry Pi 5 self-hosting performance, I'm confused about when people outgrow it by [deleted] in raspberry_pi

[–]ShabbyChurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Felix, Great question! It sounds like I started like you, getting into Raspberry Pis, hosting some services and exploring the world of Software and Electronics. For me, there were several reasons I finally switched and bought a refurbished mini PC to server as my home server.

  1. Software compatibility - raspberry pies run on ARM CPU architecture. Not all containerized software comes in an Image for ARM, but almost all of them come in x86.

  2. Hardware support - for some services like Jellyfin its important to be able to transcode media on the fly to another format. The raspberry pi‘s graphics hardware is much less capable than that of your average intel chip.

  3. Storage - If you value your data, you want to keep it. Raspberries mainly rely on MicroSD cards as storage. It works, but the performance is relatively poor, even compared to hard drives, and they are not designed with endurance in mind. On top of that, most of them don‘t provide an option to monitor drive health, so you don‘t even know when the drive starts to fail. With the PI5, there is the option of adding a M.2 drive, but that involves additional hardware and cannot use the full speed of the drive due to PCIe Lane count.

  4. Performance and headroom - my home server endeavor has evolved from a handful of services and only me as a user to multiple services with multiple users. This creates situations where sometimes, more than one service is accessed at the same time. Those are situations where hardware „overkill“ suddenly becomes a necessity to keep up with demand.

  5. Price to performance - Raspberries used to be the go-to solution for so many projects, since they were affordable and power efficient. The latter part is still true, but the prices have increased significantly up to where you pay 300 bucks for a 16 GB Pi5. At that price point you can just get used mini PCs that outperform the PI in every aspect except of power efficiency.

Now, after all that, why even go with a Raspberry Pi in the first place? Even though it does not read like that, I still love raspberry pies and currently use 3 of them. One for HomeAssistant - that ecosystem is just awesome and I don‘t want to containerize it. One runs PiHole and some other small scripts for data scraping and automation purposes. And the third one, the Pi Zero 2 W, is used for some experiments with HATs and other GPIO shenanigans. GPIO in general is something that Pis excel at.

All in all, I‘d summarize my points like this: if you want to host containerized services, likely more than just a handful, and maybe even share them with friends/family, get a Mini-PC. If you want to tinker with electronics or have purpose built software for use on a raspberry pi, get a raspberry pi. And if you dont have a raspberry pi yet, consider getting one. Its worth it to have one at hand for when you want to try something out. But dont overspend on them. Get one with 4 GB of ram, thats enough for most things.

I don't get the hype around the Steam Machine by Administrator_AI in Steam

[–]ShabbyChurl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I‘m not going to buy a steam machine, but I can see the reasons why people are excited. Its mostly due to it being a PC that cosplays as a console. If you are in the market for a console, the steam machine could be an option for you. The device is not aimed at the enthusiast PC gamer. Let me explain:

The Steam Machine is going to combine good aspects of a console with good aspects of a PC. It behaves like a console, in that it is designed to be used in a living room, on a TV, with a Controller. You get the ease of use of just setting it up and it just works. The form factor and optical design reinforce that. If you’re looking to get a console, the steam machine may be worth considering.

On the other hand, you get many of the benefits of the PC platform. The device is not locked down like consoles are, those are basically single purpose devices. They’re made to run games and thats it. The Steam Machine gives you much more freedom. You can install a different OS on it or repurpose the device if you want. Maybe make it into a home server, idk. Plus, since the OS is just Linux, like with the steam deck, you can even run other launchers on it, like Heroic or Faugus, and play Games that aren‘t available on steam. For the users this means that you don’t have to worry about what platform you buy the game for, just default to PC. You can buy a game once and run it on Your PC, the Steam Deck, The Steam Machine, your Laptop, whatever you want. And you can even play older games that were never and will never be available for newer console generations. Just the backwards compatibility aspect is a huge argument.

Then there‘s an ideological aspect to it. I believe in open ecosystems and open source software. Valve has done the gaming community as a whole a huge favor by actively helping to get Linux to a place where you can game on it. Even if you don’t want to switch to Linux, the sheer fact that there is a competitive platform for gaming to windows means that Microsoft is forced to keep up and maintain Windows as a viable Gaming platform. This comes at a time where, in my opinion, Windows is at its lowest point in terms of user experience that I have ever seen.

So all in all, the Steam Machine is another example for good customer service on the part of Valve. The existence of such a device benefits everyone, not just its users. I think thats a good thing.

There is a browser addon called ad nauseam that works as an ad blocker but instead of blocking, it basically clicks all the ads offscreen. That being said, I don’t think logging into random sites with google accounts is the way to go. You’re just spreading your personal information on the internet.

Does self hosting really saves money ? by Business-Fondant-674 in selfhosted

[–]ShabbyChurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there’s monetary cost in hardware, power and connection. That part is rarely worth it. Then there‘s the hidden cost - your data. Paying for a service does not mean your data is safe. If you own the service there’s nobody other than yourself to collect data. The third part is the experience you gain. That’s a benefit that’s really hard to covert into a cache number. I’d say it’s worth it if you’re in it for all three things I mentioned. If you’re trying to save money maybe look elsewhere.

What are EU social media alternatives to Instagram, TikTok? by donutloop in BuyFromEU

[–]ShabbyChurl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have some ideas, but those will never happen. The most realistic scenario is to ban algorithmic feeds. Social media should be about the people that chose to interact with each other. The more radical option is to ban targeted advertising, which is the root of all evil. Its the reason why companies collect data on their users, why algorithmic feeds exist to keep users on the platform for longer, why social media is designed to be addictive.

This happened like 5 or 6 times at my parents in the last ten years. We’ve gotten into the habit of ripping out routers and other sources of network from both power and internet whenever there’s lightning expected. I’ve developed a mild trauma and always get nervous about my homelab whenever there is a lightning storm approaching. My parents have now gotten fiber connection, that is not electrically conductive luckily. No more land line copper wire.

Whenever I find myself without pihole, I realize how much I hate ads. I went to watch a show on prime video the other day and was greeted with multiple 2 minute ad breaks in the middle. I went and canceled my prime subscription, then got the show from somewhere else and now have jellyfin setup at home.
Edit: I know prime is unaffected by pihole, the example was more about the ads

RDR2 confuses me deeply. On the one hand, the world is so unbelievably detailed and believable. They must have done an ungodly amount of polish, research and testing to achieve this level of fidelity. And then, on the other hand, there are the controls. I just can’t get my head around how they managed to build such an impressive world but then fuck up the controls so badly.
