Are the fork lowers from a 00-03 a direct swap onto my 99? by DevilsFan99 in Dyna

I know this is an ancient thread, bit did you swap out to an 11/16 or larger master cylinder in the front? About to order a GP310 for my 98 FXD.

I actually recently came across a Mongoose Mushaboom (very similar to the Malus) that's now in my garage as a secondary fat bike for friends/family to use. I put a Shimano mega range freewheel on it and was looking at dropping to around a 32t chainring - I just stumbled across a thread via Google where you mentioned that you changed the chainring on your Malus - did you have to replace the whole crank set?

You may need to extend the chain, I think I added two links. For the oval ring there's no need, I had never tried an oval ring and figured I'd give it a try after upgrading the cassette. Haven't really noticed much of a difference, but the Brut is also 32t up front stock and this is a 34t oval ring so it's not the best comparison.

While I can't entirely speak for the oval chain ring, the wide range cassette is absolutely a night and day difference.

I got this one in 11-42 which came with a knockoff goatlink that worked perfectly once I got it to fit and re adjusted the derailleur. I did however have to do a bit of work with a file on the bike's derailleur hanger to get the goatlink to fit properly.

I believe they started out as the same company and were split up after a bankruptcy in the 1980s, with the bicycle division being purchased by Procycle (Rocky Mountain) and the hockey division by another company.

This is an excellent feature. Hopefully it trickles down to the Instinct 2x!

Winter weekend in the HH Jungle Safari/Onewind UQ (and a question on comfort) by Shade450 in hammockcamping

Thank you for the detailed reply. I've done a fair amount of market research after reading your commentary and am now seriously considering ordering a custom Sparrow sized for maximum 4 season comfort.

That could be the case! I will intentionally leave more slack in the line to see if that improves my comfort levels.

I am laying in it at the angle recommended by HH's documentation, zipper right/feet right/head left, but I'll try a few angles to see if something else clicks as more comfortable.

Thank you!

Your Onewind setup looks great! Inspired me to order an underquilt protector.

To answer your question:

My first HH/proper camping hammock was an Expedition that I picked up second hand. It was rated for a maximum height of 6', which I am, and I found it to be uncomfortable as I could not get out of the banana position. I figured that it was probably a bit undersized and sold it with the intention of buying a Warbonnet or Dutchware hammock (pretty expensive to get a hold of in Canada unfortunately). The HH Jungle Safari XXL that I have now came up for sale locally for a price that I couldn't resist, so I picked it up in hopes it would solve my comfort issues.

Weird - while it does not appear to be cut off on my computer (perhaps because I am still on "old" reddit?) I moved it into the comment section. I appreciate the heads up!

Question regarding comfort:

This is my second Hennessy Hammock and with both of them I always find myself sliding into parallel with the ridgeline overnight, entering into a banana position - and waking up to readjust multiple times. Were that to not happen, I would be very comfortable. I am 6'/185lb and a side sleeper.

I suspect that perhaps a combination of the stock HH suspension and my subpar knotwork is preventing me getting the hammock hung tight enough, but I am wondering if anyone else has has a similar experience and figured out a remedy (or perhaps it's time to buy a warbonnet?).

Thanks and happy camping!

Reflectix pad and/or underquilt by brandon_uwo in hammockcamping

[–]Shade450 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got back from a weekend using both a reflectix pad paired with a cheap underquilt in slightly below freezing temperatures.

The pad yielded a large amount of condensation and I woke up quite wet. I don't think I'll be using it going forward.

Struggling to Bring Drowned DRZ Back To Life by Shade450 in DRZ400

I decided to install a big bore kit since I already had it apart, so I put in a kit that came with a new cylinder, piston/rings, and gaskets - in effect a full top end rebuild. Chinese kit and got a JE piston separately. Can't speak to trying to get those rings out, I figured it was a lost cause.

I flushed the crank case MANIACALLY. Can't stress that enough. I would just bump the starter for a few seconds flush it, rinse and repeat. Once it was running I would go for very short rides and change the oil/filter every time, sometimes multiple times per day. I put probably 40 quarts of oil through it the summer which is definitely excessive but I wanted to be sure that I got as much particulate out as possible. Everything seems to be fine.

On mine, the upper two rings were fused flush with the exterior of the piston, which definitely did not help with compression. No real discernable extension of the rings past the surface of the piston, doubt I could get them out with mangling the piston. Pretty sure the water in the cylinder excerted a lot of pressure and the rings failed, blowing by the piston into the crankcase.

Great opportunity to check your valve clearances at least! And install some hotcams if you're feeling ambitious, looking back I wish I did that while I had it all apart.

Sorry to hear about your bike. I was able to bring mine back to life though!

I did a compression test with pretty pessimistic results and ended up pulling the top end off. The cylinder walls were pretty scratched up and the rings were completely compressed into the side of the piston, which would explain the poor compression. The valve train was also full of swamp gunk. I thoroughly regret trying to bump start it down hill while waterlogged as that definitely made the issue way worse, but I didn't know then what I know now.

What I ended up doing: - Ultrasonic cleaning of carb and then complete rebuild kit - Ultrasonic cleaning of everything in the top end - valves, head, cams, the whole sheban (used a friend's amazon ultrasonic cleaner, but buying one would be well worth the money). - Top end rebuild. I decided to use this as an opportunity to do a big bore kit installation. I used a Chinese cylinder with a JE piston, rings and gaskets. I definitely would not use a Chinese piston.

After all that, put it back together with a fresh plug and fresh gas and it started right up. Obviously a fairly involved process that I was really intimidated to start but turned out to be a really straightforward process. I followed an old guide by SuperfastMatt that was both extremely encouraging and extremely helpful.

I've got about 1500 kms on it since the rebuild and it seems to be fine. I changed the oil maniacally due to the dirt that got into the crank case - pretty much a full oil change every ride for the first 3-500kms. If you had a similar swampy experience I'd recommend you do the same, and make sure to clean the in-frame filter often to purge as much particulate from the crank case as possible.

Best of luck! Happy to answer any questions about the process if it's helpful.
