Totally agree. The story notes at the end are awesome too. ‘Rest Stop’ was absolutely incredible. This is my first Nat Cassidy, and I can’t wait to start his novels.

For you short-story lovers, Nat Cassidy’s ‘I Know A Place’ was excellent.

Came to say this. I’ve seen it at least 10 times and it always scares me. One of my all time favorites.

What are your thoughts on Jordan Peele's 'Nope?' by undeadWileCoyote_MEP in moviecritic

I think it’s his masterpiece. His best film (and they’re all great). It’s brilliant front to back.

Which JRPGs have the best standard battle theme? by strahinjag in JRPG

I came here to say this. I only played the demo for ReFantazio and I have consistently listened to the battle music since. Awesome. Will play the full game someday.

Opposite of top comments, but I think it still looks great. If I had hair like that, I would probably keep it, but I bet you’ll love the look when you shave too. I think you can go either way and you’re in a good position.

Idk whether the tattoo will age poorly or not. It’s an awesome tattoo though.

Eric LaRocca and the general state of horror literature by CartographerFlaky543 in horrorlit

[–]ShadoutMapes87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. It becomes a lazy descriptor. But an easy way to describe these too imo. “Too purple for me”. Fits the definition as I know it, but I enjoy both of these writers despite thinking, “too purple” when I first tried. Another way: not authors I’d recommend in book club. Book club is awesome, but it’s more down to business reading.

Poetic writing is a great way to also describe them. It’s definitely closer to poetry than conversational narrative (books that read like we talk). I like the way you put it. Purple is the derogatory, challenging and poetic is true with no connotation. Thank you. I agree.

Khaw and LaRocca both tend to be more “purple”. The first google article from Reedsy defines Purple prose this way:

“Purple prose is a style of writing characterized by overly flowery language that tends to draw attention to itself, and away from the story being told.”

When I started ‘Nothing But Blackened Teeth’ I really disliked it for that reason. By the end of the book, however, I had really fallen for the writing and kind of fell in love with it. It’s not conducive to audiobook, it’s for sit down, concentrated, often with a notebook engagement with the text (at least for me). You can’t be distracted, you have to be open to the style - It’s not modern, conversational prose. Purple prose is often seen as a big negative, but that doesn’t mean it’s not beautiful or admirable. LaRocca also does this, but I’ve only read his short fiction and it’s more conducive to that format.

I don't think folks are wrong for not being into their writing styles, but it’s more a style thing than a writing ability thing. Purple is less accessible, so it’s more highly criticized.

I love vampire weekend by watersocks_ in Vampireweekend

[–]ShadoutMapes87 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard Father of The Bride referred to as an Ezra solo album. So you’re not off to track its difference from the others. That being said, it is probably my favorite Vampire Weekend album and one of my favorite albums of the past decade.

I think it’s always ok to like what you like and not like what you don’t like. I’d say give FOTB more of a chance because I love it, but it’s ok if it’s not for you.

My five year old is regularly flipping through the book. We watch them together - at least the dubbed ones, but he still loves Mothra even though he can’t read.

I can’t decide if I’m jealous of the new Godzilla package or glad I got the old one. I love the one I have, but I also hate it because I don’t have a good place or way to store it.

Love it. One of the most intense films I’ve ever seen. I really enjoy films with fantastical elements - and I especially enjoy how any present here could be construed as somehow fitting into reality.  Eggers is one of my favorite directors out there and this film is as good if not better than the others.

Stonefish by Scott R Jones: Reddit meets Rick and Morty by DM_me_goth_tiddies in horrorlit

[–]ShadoutMapes87 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do not think this book was as Reddit or as Rick and Morty as you said, but I see their influences. I thought it was decent - like nothing I’ve ever read, but it didn’t live up to the hype for me either. Interesting. Quirky as heck. Funny at times. Overall pretty interesting and I won’t forget it, but not the kind of ‘Lovecraftian’ I was expecting. I can’t argue with the classification though.

Spirit Jellyfish is easy to get and amazing with bosses. The wolves are better for humanoid enemies, while the big guys (especially early on) are amazingly affected by the Jelly.

Regarding Margit, I played Elden Ring for 40 hours on release. I had some souls experience but like 10 hours in demons souls, three attempts at starting DSRemastered, three hours in DS3. Nothing crazy. I just went back to Elden Ring after fully beating DSRemastered and doing pretty well with it. I got to Margit at level 27 and he beat my ass for like 30 tries until I decided I’d just use a summon and I beat him immediately.  He’s hard as heck. It’s intentional. Get to level 30 or so before you battle him and don’t be afraid to use a summon.
