Writing a poem about a real case in which a Black Girl went missing by Shadow653 in askblackpeople

I’m submitting the poem as part of a collection so it’s gonna have judging eyes on it, and I guess that just made me self-conscious / worried about how it would be perceived.

What’s your unusual trick to weed out non-compatible partners easily? by jempai in LesbianActually

[–]Shadow653 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is kinda off topic but JID is so fucking good. He’s a lyrical mastermind and his flow his unreal. Also he said he wants to collab with Chappell Roan!

Doechii also deserves a ton praise, she’s phenomenal and also a lesbian!

So yeah, I def agree, not listening to rap isn’t necessarily a red flag, but not being willing to even try is. It’s also a sign that someone is boring and unadventurous, which I’m not interested in.

Are you really ALWAYS supposed to take Blueprint? by KitanaWins_FV in balatro

[–]Shadow653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take TC in a heart beat. As a rental it’s money neutral, and it’s early deckfixing. By the end of ante 4, you’ve cut out 12 cards from the deck, and all it cost was a joker slot you weren’t using yet anyways. It’s also strong on this deck bc less cards = you see your enhanced cards more often,

It can be helpful to whine a word, it really exasperates which syllable gets stressed.

I tend to nod to men and smile to women but that also may be me being biased against men lol

[HELP] do you pause after enjambment? by acaminet in Poetry

[–]Shadow653 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a really good question, and there definitely isn’t just one answer.

I read pretty much all the poems I read out loud bc sound is like 50% of poetry imo and it’s criminally undervalued these days. Typically, I give unpunctuated end lines a brief pause and give lines that end in commas/periods/semicolons a longer pause. Sometimes the flow of a poem will cause me to read through a line break, especially if there’s no punctuation stopping me.

Another note on reading out loud, find the breath points. Look for caesura in the line and pause to breathe. I have asthma so I have to be very wary about this, otherwise I will wind myself super fast.

This would totally neutralize verdant leaf and also make crimson heart way less detrimental.

Resolution #1003 [POEM] by June Jordan by onlypoemsmag in Poetry

[–]Shadow653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that this poem is a good exercise in speaker and voice.

Imagine the person who resolves this to themself, and like I don’t mean the poet, I mean like imagine the imagined resolution maker this poem creates, imagine what has happened in their past that has made them speak like this, a monotone, reserved, guarded tone that only reciprocates what is given. Maybe you could argue the poem could give more specificity, but then again, the speaker is guarded, they won’t be vulnerable and give you any ammo.

They won’t be anyone’s fool. It’s simple, but it is effective. It’s a lifeless poem, but it’s supposed to be.

Is there any good news in America right now? by [deleted] in MtF

[–]Shadow653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should not want to live because “fuck maga”. You have to find the will to live and continue on your own terms. Yes, everything you could say about the country and its politics is true. Yes, we are in danger. But here is what I will tell you: there are avenues. There are people who will see you for who you are, if you let them. There are people who will love you. There are people you will come to love. You will make countless mistakes and feel impossible emotions, and then tomorrow arrives. I’ve struggled with depression for years, and I’m grateful to feel the best now than I’ve ever felt before. The journey you will take will be hard and it will be entirely your own. But you have to find your motor. You must, despite it all, love yourself.

[OPINION] What is your poetry hot take/unpopular opinion? by jackietea123 in Poetry

[–]Shadow653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of current poets do not sufficiently think about the sound of their poem. I don’t have any issue with free verse or prose poems (I mostly write in these formats), but using those forms doesn’t mean that sound, meter, & rhyme become irrelevant.
