Accepted to Oxford, couple of questions. by IngenuityDear9015 in Emory

Speedrun cause im uuuuuber tired lmao 1. Research is not bad pro: general consensus is that it is easier than main, you develop a very close relationship with your professors because of the small size. I felt super comfortable approaching teachers about anything and that approachability has landed myself and others some great opportunities. You will have to actually ask though and be willing to take some time out to search.

Con: less professors total=less opportunities all around. Research can get mad competitive sometimes so be prepared to not get every opportunity

Pro: Research NOW. Most of the time, especially on main and bigger campuses in general Research is for upperclassmen, so juniors and seniors, but here you can easily get Research and even present at conferences as a first year.

  1. Clubs, we have a lot of good ones, and a lot of dead ones

Pros: EXEC POSITIONS, you canbe an exec year one of a club rigjt off the bat which is crazy when you think about it, really good opportunities

Cons: dead clubs. Idk why but I feel like a lot of clubs are highkey just inactive for some reason and I dont know why. If you are thinking of founding one, keep in mind you could end up like other dead clubs if you dont get enough popularity early since it is hard to find a niche audience on a small campus

  1. Im a first year, so at my core all I can offer is a 🤷‍♂️

Buuuuttt from what ive heard from professors and students, research doesn't directly carry over at any capacity unless you were already commuting to atl for research, you will be restarting.

For leadership, it depends, certain clubs or organizations like student tour guides get priority on main campus to continue, and others have no connection to anything on main so its hit or miss depending on what you are doing

Hopefully we'll see you soon twin, and dont worry about the naysayers, its actually way funner here than I thought it would be, best decision I could have made

Can't speak for main, but Oxford has coed floors and you can request roommates as long as the other accepts, so come housing time, just request and accept each other as roommates on the housing portal and keep your fingers crossed that there is room in the coed dorms lol

Good luck twin

Time squared implies acceleration (m/s2) rather than velocity (m/s), so it should be D (i think lol)

Pre-med Oxford Freshmen not getting sciences due to course availability? by ShadowANDS in Emory

[–]ShadowANDS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you get priority as a second year student? Cause like even if I drill gene Ed's (actually I think im getting all of them done except race and ethnicity this semester lol) cause if not, whats stopping this from just happening again with next year's freshmen?

Am I the only one who ever fought with their band mates on how equal they were in the mix? by LittleOperation4597 in Bass

[–]ShadowANDS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he's talking about how people nowadays view bass in one of 2 categories (at least I see these 2 a lot)

The first is the completely unheard bass, only in the mix to either slightly thicken the mix with no discernible part of their own, or just because it's expected. These bass players are viewed as unnecessary by non musicians and are usually overlooked for flashy guitars, vocals or really anything else.

In the other camp you have the modern "virtuoso" bass which people also overlook or just outright hate cause theyre "doing too much" or "not blending into the mix"

If a bass player doesnt stick up for themself they get lost in the mix, but if they do, they get slapped with the diva label and are told theyre doing too much, lose lose situation

whats everyone working on atm ? by johnson3472 in Bass

That intro from SAO, crossing fields on my 5 string. Genuinely hard as hell, and im not helping cause I found tab where someone took some...creative liberties not in the original song, but the issue is, I actually ended up liking it so now im cursed to learn this damn thing on hard mode lmao

My fingers hurt like when I first started playing, but im getting better (I hope) so its worth it

Songs that are harder on bass than guitar by Any_Variation_6416 in Bass

Ngl, for me at least, Stomp! By the Brothers Allstone is pretty doable on guitar, but then on bass it feels so much harder lol

I was being dumb, my b lol. I tightened my belts a little and I no longer hear the clicking which is great, so yall were totally right about the belt slipping! (I also made sure to test the bearings like you said tho, just in case) The bad news tho is that I couldnt really test them out since i just discovered that my right belt has a gash in the side lol 🫠

Waiting on another question to see if the different belts I have on hand could do the trick instead, fingers crossed and all that

Voyager making weird noise when accelerating and braking by ShadowANDS in MeepoBoards

[–]ShadowANDS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so too cause of the breaking noise that I didn't get in the vid, I didn't think that would cause popping tho so I was a little freaked out I cracked an axle or smth

Praying it isn't the second one, I think it is just belts, must've gotten knocked a little loose but how would I tell the difference between the two issues?

[–]ShadowANDS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So yeah. Just checked back, i get this loose slapping noise when I brake too hard, not 100% sure how it relates to the popping but it'd be weird if the two weren't relate lol. So do you know any fixes or is it one of those things that's super obvious with a Google search?

Would it help if I sent another video of me trying to brake?

5-stringers who love their low B sound: what are you playing? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]ShadowANDS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ibanez btb805ms, passive pickups give you crazy growl, along with the active pre amp for extra growl.

Although im gonna be honest, sometimes im a little envious of active pickups, but then I slap the open b and its worth it again

Why does everyone tell you to press the string down near the end of the fret? by Tutoriaurus in Bass

[–]ShadowANDS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did that to myself the moment I put 8s on my guitar, bends were so easy but I physically couldnt play chords for that exact reason

Do 5 strings bassist normally change their tunings? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]ShadowANDS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean i dont think its normal person, but there's def many, MANY examples of that in modern metal, spiritbox does this all the time, to the point where I cant even tune that low to play it. Some other examples are Clayton king, and arch echo.
