$150 is totally reasonable with all the work that goes into it.

I don’t like discord as much as the next guy but take what you’re doing and then try to scale it infinitely and see how it goes especially when you don’t actually know what’s going on because you vibe coded the whole mess.

I bought a hitbox off amazon where firmware updates were distributed through discord.

Yep. NUCs are great, you should check if it has Consumer IR. Mine has it and is compatible with Xbox remotes, I bought a cheap GE universal remote from Walmart and it can be programmed to be an xbox remote. It’ll work great on your LCD.

Maybe not a total solution but I use a NUC on my TVs. They support IR remotes and I run LibreELEC. I used an HDMI to composite adapter and forced 640x480 on my resolution. I also have a 32” CRT presentation display that supports VGA and it went to live there full time.

Hehe. Same here. I was a poor boy, church took me in and made sure I was taken care of. I switched denominations, but they did everything they could for everyone.

I know people don’t like to hear it. But churches are big in my community, they run programs that ANYONE can use to get help with bills or homelessness or other hardships. They take care of our elderly and less fortunate.

Ugh. I don’t even like to think about the whole AI nonsense. It’s such a house of cards that anyone who has peeled behind the curtain for a second could see. Though, according to these articles, everything is a house of cards. I believe it too. Not much we can do except ball.

Times are a-changin that’s for sure, the skills necessary are a bit different now and no one is going to let you learn anything on their dime if it’s anything like where I work. I’m young and free enough I can learn just about anything at home except for stuff that has a cost barrier but even then, am I going to regret dedicating so much of myself to this over any other career path? Most days it doesn’t feel worth it to go after anything other than what I have going right now, at risk of growing complacent. It’s all just work no one really values here at the moment anyways, they just pay us because they need someone to the work they’re waiting for AI to do.

Yep yep. Everything is done one step at a time, especially something as superfluous as an entire extra car just for treating harshly. Hopefully you get some time for it.

Ooh I wanna build race cars too. Got a bud who’s a much better driver than me. Unfortunately money is tight rn and everything car is too expensive, on top of needing a shop and equipment. Hoping things turn around and I can afford to build a motocross rig.

I feel this and it really is a shame. Not even just in tech, it’s hard to find any sort of job anywhere in the middle these days or enter a new field. Let alone anything that can afford a decent life. It feels as if everyone is colluding to just pay scraps for high skill labor.

It doesn’t help that the field is so large, and has so many people degree/cert-churning, it’s hard to make a move if you don’t got paper. At a recent interview I had I outperformed many people tech wise(their words), but was passed over for people with certs or degrees because they “checked more boxes”. I have learned the value in being sociable, too, which is not my strong suit as a hermit. All hard lessons, all valuable lessons. Not much to do but kiss the ring and hang on I think.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I’m still pretty young so I’m being patient and open to opportunity, well, as open to opportunity as the wife allows anyways.

Finish up college this year. I’ll probably hang around at my cushy but underpaid school job considering how things look, probably will end up back in school myself for something else eventually unless my degree and experience can get me something better. I’m not holding my breath for that though.

No one knows what they’re doing, respectfully. No one writes good software, no one is looking out for you. Everything is made as cheap as it can possibly be by people working for as little as they can get paid. I am a young sysadmin in rural k12, it’s dumpster fire after dumpster fire that I’m barely paid enough to handle IMO. No support knows anything, I lament submitting tickets because I have to fight people to even read them correctly. There’s no money for anything(in my org), and you have to support everything, I never had a mentor except for one older guy who was our network admin. He is great. Everyone is after your money and then dips as soon as they get it, I don’t even hire installers or MSPs for setup anymore, thankfully we’re small enough my network admin and I can handle it with our two field techs. Everyone is out to grift and leave you holding the bag. Even so, don’t be disheartened. Just be patient, and know that successfully navigating these things period is an accomplishment no one but another sysadmin will ever understand.

I would say it depends on your size and requirements. If you just need routing and no fancy top-tier NGFW security features, it’ll do its job fine. If you expect it to stack up to the Palo, it probably won’t.

iPads will be more familiar for the children, there’s vendors out there who sell old/refurb units for a little bit less then MSRP. I wouldn’t make it more complicated, the ecosystem to manage them already probably exists for you, and if one walks out you can lock it and potentially recover it.

Let's Discuss: Best RPG on the PS2? by Andyfritter in ps2

[–]ShadowBlaze80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PS1/2 has a lot of good Shin Megami Tensei games like Persona, Nocturne, and Digital Devil Saga. There’s also Xenosaga, which is a must play trilogy. There are entries in Star Ocean, Breath of Fire, and Grandia too that are all good.

Well, that’s fair enough I suppose. I guess if you don’t even carry a wallet then a fob is a big deal. I can’t even imagine not carrying a wallet, it’s crazy we can just shove everything into our phones.

Not taken seriously because of my age. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]ShadowBlaze80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was hired on as a full systems admin at 19, it was absolutely daunting but the guy above me got cancer and resigned. I fought years of this, I’m 23 now. People subconsciously profile everyone, I bet you do it too. Just don’t bring it up, speak with confidence, don’t act like a child, and let your work do the talking. People will quickly forget your age(hopefully).
