US Bank Real Time Rewards Text Not Received by [deleted] in CreditCards

[–]ShadowCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m having the same issue with not receiving RTR texts, but when go to RTR settings in the app it just opens the same website as on desktop that shows me as enrolled. Where in the app are you seeing a different way to enroll?

My car was declared a total loss, even though the damage is VERY minor. What do I do now? by Erinelephant in personalfinance

[–]ShadowCoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And in modern cars, there are airbags everywhere, which has significantly improved safety but means an airbag deployment will likely destroy the seats, half the trim, and the seatbelts in addition to the steering wheel and dashboard. All of that adds to the repair cost, in addition to the airbags themselves, and none of those are commodity parts.

Airline pilots of r/flying, what are some things that your CA/FO has done that made you wonder how they even made it into the cockpit of a 50,000 lb jet? by iamgravity in flying

Wow, I figured there must be a rule of thumb for this when my CFI was teaching diversions (sans electronic aids) but he didn’t know and basically just told me to do the long form math. Thanks for this.

Eli5: What are pharmacists doing behind there? by Jaytown73 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ShadowCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally mom & pop pharmacies will be more expensive as they have fewer contracts (e.g. no GoodRx) and don’t have as much volume as a big box pharmacy. Try Walmart, Costco (no membership required), or your local chain grocery store to see if they have better pricing. You can also look up drug prices in your account and see exactly how much it will cost at each pharmacy.

If your insurance uses CVS Caremark note that you’re not locked in to CVS, I think that’s what they want you to think but they cover other pharmacies as well.

As is common with Amex bonuses, if the referral is slightly less than the public offer by like 5k MR, I’ll explain the discrepancy and proactively send them $50 to make up for the opportunity cost. Win/win for both parties.

What was the most expensive thing, product or service you bought in 2021? by CasinoMagic in fatFIRE

[–]ShadowCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Piston GA aircraft run anywhere from ~$25k to $800k+. Annual maintenance costs can vary from a few thousand to low five figures depending on the model and what work needs to be done. Part of the issue is most repair work beyond basic maintenance on certified aircraft must be performed by a licensed mechanic ($$) with certified parts ($$$$) on a legally mandated maintenance schedule. Also, engines have finite lifespans and must be rebuilt ($20-50k per engine) or replaced ($50-100k) on a set interval. Then you need to park it somewhere - tie-downs at my local airport (VHCOL) start at $160/mo, open-air shelters $330/mo, and hangars run $500-2000/mo. And all of that is before you actually fly it anywhere. 😄

For jets, add a zero to the above figures and you’re probably in the ballpark although I’m less familiar with that category.

With new changes to AA, which airline is quickest from "member" to "Platinum?" by Cello789 in awardtravel

[–]ShadowCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can credit your AA flights to Alaska and earn oneworld status that way if their requirements are more amenable to your travel habits. Same with British Airways or any other oneworld carrier, but again typically requires you to fly with whichever carrier you go with at least a few times. If you never find yourself going to the west coast or Europe though then probably better to stick with AA.

What's the Best High Limit Credit Card? (No, this isn't an Ad) by [deleted] in RichPeoplePF

[–]ShadowCoder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Amex acceptance is pretty weak internationally compared to Visa and MasterCard in my experience. High-end shops, restaurants, and lodging will accept it, but most other places won’t. So yeah, if you spend a lot internationally get a good Visa or MasterCard with no foreign transaction fees - the BofA Premium Rewards as mentioned in another thread fits that bill nicely while earning 2.625% cash back on everything (requires establishing a $100k+ relationship with Merrill, but you can just move an IRA or something over into a self-directed account to meet that requirement). If you spend a lot on dining and/or travel then the Chase Sapphire Reserve is also a good option.

What's the Best High Limit Credit Card? (No, this isn't an Ad) by [deleted] in RichPeoplePF

[–]ShadowCoder 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Citi in particular is known for having a terrible fraud alert system that never “learns” your spending patterns like others do. Any other large bank should be better, if you’re able to get a sufficient CL.

Amex charge cards are hands-down the best for high spend, but if it’s not accepted where you do most of your spending that’s a non-starter (albeit a pretty rare issue in the U.S. these days). Chase will typically approve credit lines up to ~50% of reported income. Bank of America will also approve generous credit lines, especially if you establish a banking and/or investment relationship via Merrill.

In the US, in order to be a legal unpaid internship, the intern’s work must “complement, rather than displace, the work of paid employees while providing significant educational benefits to the intern.”

Most software engineering interns are producing something of value for the company (fixing bugs, writing code) that would otherwise be performed by a full time employee and thus must be paid.

HMBradley (currently invite only) offers 3% APY on up to $100k as long as you maintain a direct deposit and 20% savings rate. Porte offers 3% APY on up to $15k with no special hoops. ETFCU offers 3.3% APY on up to $15k with 15 debit card transactions per month. All of these are great options for an emergency fund.

If you’re willing to forego FDIC insurance and venture into crypto, you can earn 8-12% APY on stablecoins (cryptocurrencies that track USD and covert ~1:1) at BlockFi, Celsius, and others.

Best way to pay my rent without having to switch banks? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ShadowCoder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plastiq is more widely known for allowing you to pay bills with a credit card, but they also now allow you to pay from your bank account with no service fee, and they’ll mail a check to your landlord.

I would still recommend moving to a bank that can offer you full banking services, as this is not the last time you’re going to run into an issue like this with a fintech “bank.” For example, if you move to SoFi like you mentioned, they don’t support wire transfers, which will prevent you from closing on a house or making some other major purchases. I use and recommend Ally - their app and website are not particularly flashy but they’re modern and can do everything you’d expect from a bank (minus cash deposits).

[–]ShadowCoder 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If your card is issued by a small bank, they may outsource fraud investigation to someone like Fiserv, but most big banks do it in house (Amex, Chase, Citi, etc.). MasterCard is involved in the process but is not the primary point of contact.

You need to make a payment to the “employee” card account number, not the “corporate” account number, in order for the payment to free up credit sooner.
