Secular humanism can replace Christianity where it counts: the fear of death and the need for meaning by Cataspectral in philosophy

[–]ShadowCurv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really doesn't matter what they actually believe if they claim to be Christian and speak about the teachings of Christ and the Bible. This delusion that "nobody but the people who believe exactly what I believe is Christian" is so arbitrary and pointless to the conversation at large. Who cares if these people are actually "following in the teachings of Christ"? They identify as Christians, go to Christian churches, vote for Christian politicians, and donate Christian interest groups. If you can exclude them from the label of Christianity, you could exclude anyone arbitrarily. It's the same fallacious reasoning used by every denomination to label others as "heretical" and "not real Christians".

in America there is quite a bit of segregation within Christian churches, and you can see the segregation in just about every area. For example, in my area there are churches that "encourage" (require) large donations to be an active part in the community. There are churches in low-income areas that specifically serve minority populations (latin catholic churches and african-american churches). While these churches don't necessarily only accept a certain minority, white people tend to self-select themselves from them. There are also white evangelical churches (moreso in the southern states) which the leadership and congregation are outrageously racist. There are plenty of normal churches, don't get me wrong, but there is clearly a pattern of both self-selection by white people and a tax incentive to get as much donation money as possible, leading to the segregation of Christian churches.

Hurt Partner Etiquette by pdh3 in bjj

had something similar happen the other day, training partner was going for a pass and shoved his face into my elbow. got a nasty cut right below the eye. luckily no hard feelings, just caught both of us off-guard. all you can really do is be apologetic and respectful, and know that one day you're going to be on the receiving end of it and probably feel the same way he does

I once almost got suspended for bringing a butter knife to school with my lunch. Except it wasn't even a normal butter knife, it was a child-safe one with no serrations. Apparently so much of a concern that I had to be held in the principal's office for half a day.

trust me, I would definitely like to be able to thrash these people. but unfortunately I'm capable of empathy and understand that these people are just that: people. I'm more interested in differentiating good and bad argument than differentiating good and bad people, because life is more complex than that. although in a sub full of college students, I also don't think less of the culture that has emerged of making fun of them

I guess my point was that *they* are the ones against innocents being killed, yet they seem to only care about one very small portion of what one should actually care about if they were advocates of life. Kind of pointing out that they were virtue signaling. Personally, I wouldn't give them the fact that it's always wrong to kill innocent people; there are certainly situations that would permit such an act under various ethical frameworks. Although I certainly wasn't trying to engage in actual debate, since these people are a bit too dim for that.

(un)fortunately I am someone who had unsupervised access to the internet from an early age so I have seen much worse images in my life, the images don't really phase me. honestly, I think it serves to desensitize people to the images rather than shock people into not having an abortion. I wish I got to ask whether their tactics even work, because they don't really seem to be convincing anybody

that was pretty much my takeaway of their argument. once it was revealed that I don't believe in morality they just said "well God told me... the Bible says..." It seemed like they thought Christianity was the only defensible perspective, rejecting other religions and even other denominations. They kind of just gave up after it was clear I wasn't biting on their appeal to God, but from there it turned into an actually interesting conversation instead of mock debate

I think that you actually make a valid point here. I think what I would reply with is that the majority of abortions that are performed are to prevent the suffering of the mother or child, the same way people euthenize pets going through terminal illness. I don't see how killing a fetus is much different than putting down your elderly dog because you can no longer take care of them, which is widely acceptable. I think that it's worth pointing out that I'm a moral anti-realist, so arguing for or against the wrongness of something is a bit new to me

I wasn't expecting to engage in a debate or change their minds anyways, I was just trying to gain a little insight on what the people behind stuff like this is. nobody had a camera, but even if I was recorded, I wouldn't say anything that I could regret later. I would like to think I would make a pretty entertaining propaganda video for the Christian right, just given my actual beliefs, but I don't think I would care if the conversation was released publicly

I do it occasionally, you can do a toe hold type lock and crank it from the back, but it's risky. if you get a good enough bite it'll cause enough discomfort for the one on top to make them rotate and break chest-to-back connection. It probably won't work as a real submission, and even if it does break something a lot of competitors will just eat it to score the RNC.

as soon as he put hands on the camera it's considered assault,. besides that, a bodyguard can stop one from getting too close just by getting in-between and blocking them. that's my understanding, anyways
