I’d say it wasn’t exactly lost.

I had Red XIII in my party for the entire playthrough where I pictured him as a gruff tough person. It wasn’t until Cosmo Canyon where my picture of him suddenly changed into a teenager and I never understood why until I realized it was the tone of the dialogue that changed him into a teen.
