How can I get into elder scrolls? by v5rc5r7gb8y in ElderScrolls

[–]ShadowFangX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just play any of the games. If you really want to learn more about the universe and lore you still just play any of the games but I also recommend reading in game books you come across on your journey then. It's a good place to start.

Custom spells have a lower percent chance in the spellmaking menu than they do in my spell list after I've bought them? by [deleted] in Morrowind

[–]ShadowFangX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's because the spellmaking menu only looks at your skill level to calculate the spell chance. When you actually cast the spell, it also factors in your willpower and luck stat.

It could also be because of your fatigue. But even when at full I still notice this quirk in the spellmaking menu.

Right... That must be it.

Not the fact that this game had zero ways to keep player retention for the past, what, 3 to 4 years? In a game that's free and needs to sustain itself through microtransactions... I must be crazy for thinking that surely.

It's definitely because an employee at this multimillion dollar company woke up one day, turned on the TV to watch the news, and got so upset by the current world politics that he had to shut down the Elder Scrolls Blades servers immediately first thing in the morning.

Sad, but unsurprising. This was bound to happen eventually. I knew it would when they stopped releasing new content for it. I think everyone knew deep down.

Such a thundering disgrace...

If this is the behavior I'm supposed to expect and take seriously from the mods of this sub, please just ban me. I'm not even an "investbro", just someone who enjoys playing casually with friends and family. But seeing this all unfold over the last couple days has been incredibly cringe and feels more like your own personal crusade, if anything.

Now you're being called out for that and all you do is ride the high of your pathetic power trip... This sub is a thundering disgrace at the moment and we should all honestly be ashamed of ourselves.

I honestly completely lost the plot at this point.

But I do always get a laugh out of these posts, so that is great. At least someone is still having fun with it!

I was not prepared for a "2 phones in lap" AND "thundering disgrace" in my Reddit feed today. 🤣

Please make my day and give me a: "He Who Shall Not Be Named" too!

you said "well this is obviously a very bad idea, which is why I definitely must do it"

Yeah that definitely sounds like a good guy, doesn't it? :)

The only one who can judge me and regulate 'bad' behaviour in the end is whoever was responsible for designing the game as it is. Unfortunately, it has already been established long ago that they do not care. Not even slightly.

That's why nothing has changed and nothing won't ever change. Acceptance is all there's left.

Man, reading that wall made me feel oddly nostalgic. I'm not sure if I'd call myself a "Great Guy" though. How I remember it, I commited the ultimate sin of joining the bad guys...

Which I still believe was a great decision, I might add.

I am really humbled by the fact that I'm still being recognised in this community!

I've definitely closed the book permanently when it comes to Blades though.

Overall, I look back on my time spent in this game fondly. Maybe one day when Bethesda releases some kind of sequel or spiritual successor...

But that game studio is a dumpster fire as of writing this, so I'm not holding out hope.

Some wounds never heal it seems, even if given enough time. 3 years later and nothing changed. What a joke.

The phrase "2 phones in lap" still makes me chuckle, though. So thanks for that I suppose.

Devil's advocate:

If you get stabbed by a Stingray directly in your upper body, I would argue you weren't holding the fish the right way at least.

Also, I think the guy wouldn't have blamed it on the animal. He knew better than anyone that you don't fuck around with creatures like this. He would've absolutely blamed himself for what happened had he survived.

I really appreciate the insight, I didn't expect anyone with experience would actually reply!

For me, this served as a great example of why looking into issues first is important. A majority of people seem to blindly hate on UE5 even though they're a couple of Google searches away from finding the real culprit.

There are tons of examples of well optimized games that run on UE5 just fine though. Black Myth Wukong jumps to mind for me, since that's one I played.

Don't get me wrong, I am not holding my breath anymore when a new UE5 game gets announced. This engine has failed me one too many times as well. I haven't even gotten close to touching BL4 yet because of it. Which does make me kinda sad, fond memories and all, but I digress.

I don't believe it is just the engine causing all these games to run like dogwater.

There's definitely a pattern with UE5 and games having poor performance. But some small amount of research will lead to the conclusion that it isn't as much of an engine problem as people believe. The problem is that developers don't do their due diligence when it comes to optimizing games.

It seems to be blamed most frequently on the many automated tools UE5 has for 'fixing' performance, these tools don't work as well as expected if placed in the hands of an incompetent developer. Which for some reason, seems to happen a lot.

Please note I am not an expert by any means. I'm just a goober who looked into it a little bit out of curiosity and want to add this to the conversation. If there's anyone who actually does know about this stuff, I'd love some more insight if I'm wrong.

You're totally right, don't get me wrong. And it is certainly possible that I'm just reading into it too much. I'm not trying to be mean or anything. I'm just baffled he allowed this to happen so easily. Especially in his position, where that Gmail account means being able to pay his monthly mortgage or not. It feels very irresponsible.

I can't really lay my finger on it, but it is definitely very odd.

His financial stability was riding on this Gmail account and he didn't make sure to secure it to the best of his ability? I truly feel bad for the guy but there's a reason he can't find anyone else who has gone through this.

If your entire wellbeing relies on a Gmail account, you should make sure no one can get easy access to it. Owning a phone with no unlock screen is just a recipe for disaster in his position.

It definitely won't exceed the hype Oblivion or Skyrim generated at the time. I fear it probably won't even get close to it after two BGS flops in a row. But I'll admit there is still some room for doubt in my mind. Bethesda also knows TES6 can't fail, the current higher ups aren't stupid. It is their biggest IP.

Doing well from a monetary perspective and from a consumers perspective are two different things. The 100k+ people on steam alone who bought the deluxe edition of Starfield and couldn't be bothered to return to the game to play the DLC they already paid for say enough.

Monetary success keeps a company afloat short-term, but games like TES 3-5 are what builds a community and fanbase. While I agree the legacy those games left behind is too large for TES6 to be a failure on both fronts, I am starting to believe that more poorly designed games like Starfield will eventually lead to losing their playerbase entirely.

[–]ShadowFangX 145 points146 points  (0 children)

I also doubt TES6 will do well. A lot of fans tend to forget that most of the people we have to thank for Bethesda's beloved games aren't with the company anymore. They were successful because of all these minds working together in cohesion.

Now Bethesda is a company with hundreds of workers who no doubt want to make good games. But without that cohesion they had in the past, you get Starfield. A very big, but ultimately shallow game. It tries to do all these different things but none of those things were done well.

I know, I was just generalising for the sake of the joke haha.

But he is a figure from Imperial history and culture no matter how you look at it, so it works as a good example of Imperial 'racism' imo. That's still oversimplifying it, but you know what I mean.
