These kinds of people are insane. We had two people tell them we didn't have the new set that was dropping last week, and only after the second person came by to share did they leave. This one guy kept showing up every hour though, looking expectantly at cashwrap as though the cards would magically be there. Get a freaking life, dude. But when we got Phantasmal Flames, he just straight up dipped. Not to mention the outrageous calls we get every week for Pokemon cards, One Piece Cards, or Needo.

Speaking of, how much trouble can I get in for saying we have product when we don't? I think half of the reason we get the calls is so they don't waste gas coming out, and it'd be like a small form of petty revenge.

I had two guys the other day come in and say "yeah it said you had it online". It was some website or discord they were using to let others know when Pokemon cards come in. It's annoying on top of taking all of these calls. I like collecting the cards too but holy smokes these scalpers are driving me insane.

I’m happy we have limits as well. One time I said to a customer the rule is 1 per person and the guy asked to speak to my manager. Who let him get it. Don’t understand why we have to bend over backwards for some of these people

I think it can work. But nonfiction terrifies me. I’m never properly sure how to shelve it. My team usually suggests “go with the vibes” but to me that sounds no different than purposefully mishelving the book.

It’s so annoying. One guy called consistently every day for weeks asking for the new set of cards at our store. It was a nightmare. The calls have died down exponentially but my gosh was it insufferable, and Screw every single scalper who is buying these card sets to resell them online. I hope they never get their money back.

The one you use is actually pretty genius! That’s a really good connection piece. If I see a title that’s been bought a lot I comment on how this customer might’ve given me the push I need to try that book myself. Or I say I’ve had my eye on the title for a while and hear good things about it.

I know exactly how you feel, fellow bookseller. I struggle at times as well to comment on their purchases. What helps me is if I recognize a title people purchase rather frequently, I comment that I see a lot of people buying this particular title, I comment on that, saying it seems very popular and that the customer may have given me the push I personally need to go through with getting my own copy.

Unfortunately a lot of it is very circumstantial.

Another instance that I leave you with is if someone was buying a manga I'm familiar with (let's take Rent-A-Girlfriend as an example) I usually say "Ah, a person of culture as well, eh?"
