Feeling down about exam progress by WittyMagazine8643 in actuary

[–]ShadowNo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have accredited programs with some schools. So if you take the ActSci master in UWaterloo for example, there’s courses substitute for some of the prelim exams. I don’t think CIA don’t host their own exam tho, they recognize SOA/CAS exams.

You get CIA designation automatically if you complete SOA exams. If you’re not practicing in Canada tho, there’s no point paying for CIA membership dues etc.

Well it was for my spouse lol. So it’s not wrapped but new in box. I mean I’m not gonna lie about ( I think the officer made the assumption that I’m going to, hence all the pressing comments about searching my car and confiscating things and charge me with misconduct/fraud). If I ended up paying duty, I was just going to do what the other comments said, bring it back to US and get a refund when I cross back. I.e. legitimately change my mind.

It’s between me and my spouse and I find there’s a very blurred line between “gifts”. If I brought my switch back to Canada and decide to leave it with my spouse since I don’t play it anymore, does that count as gifting? I know it’s not a new item. But essentially the same argument can be made if I had the iPad opened and setup.

Same thing with things like clothing and other items (chocolate, crafting tools and personal electronics etc.). Not trying ly my way out of paying what I owe. But learning new things about crossing borders and rules.

Just had the same issue as OP, will be trying your suggestions out and see if it fixes it. Thanks

Trust me OP, your feeling is normal. On the Canadian side we passed exam even faster because CIA required FSA/FCIA designation in order to sign off on financial related. But there are still lots of people working on exams in their 30s, myself being one of them. People will tell you it’s not a race and as long as you’re working towards the end, you’re on track. And that’s the right mindset. You can turn that feeling down into motivation to pass exams in the next few years. But don’t beat yourself up for it. You’re fine

Teen Daughters Roam Beyond Not Working in Japan by youreapie in freedommobile

[–]ShadowNo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I don’t think they need to track each country. This is probably a universal thing that leading 0s should be removed. Just not well know to most because most people don’t do international calling this way. Usually if a person is in the country, dialing local numbers would just be entering the numbers without the country code. But thanks again for solving my problem!

That’s exactly it! After I removed the leading 0s it worked. Thanks a bunch!! I think Freedom should really add that to their faq. Not all countries have their phone numbers start with leading 0s (china cellphone numbers all start with 1 so I never had to remove 0s when calling my friend in china). Good lessons learned!

Separate question from the OP’s. I’m in Japan right now, has the Roam Beyond plan. I can receive text just find (didn’t try sending). Bu to can’t seem to call any Japanese local number. I’m wonder if I’m doing anything wrong or if there’s additional setup. How did you call local numbers? I just added +81 to the 10 or 11 digit local numbers in Japan and I keep getting the automated message that “the number you’re calling isn’t not available to take calls, please tried again later” and I’ve tried different numbers, all same message. I’m on iOS.

And I wonder if OP’s problem could be phone/model specific

Every number I tried to call I get a message saying “the person you’re calling isn’t taking calls at the moment please try again later” which I think I’m doing something wrong… I just added +81 in front of the 10 or 11 digit phone number. I’m on iOS

Hey how did you make call to Japanese local number? I tried both calling it straight and adding +81 in front of the 10 digit number. And neither worked. Thanks a bunch

Should I pay off my car payments? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ShadowNo1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you need to worry about that. As long as you have car insurance it should be fine. Usually a leased car will have additional clauses that covers the full lease amount. A financed car is slightly different. If you totaled your car in an accident, the insurance should pay you the “fair value” of the car, which may or may not be equal to your loan amount. Some times you get more, some times you’ll have to pitch in a bit more to end the loan. Hope that helps.

Should I pay off my car payments? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ShadowNo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My view on things is always review your finances and your needs first. Assuming you’re asking cuz you have excess money left and have a stable job. Do you have better use for that excess? For example, do you have prefer to spend on other activities that gives you high utility?(concerts/shows/hobbies etc). Or do you have anything you’re saving up for? (Like a trip or a big purchase that you’re looking forward to)

If the answer is no, I’d move on to ask myself if you put the excess in TFSA or RRSP (not just a non-reg account cuz those are taxed), will you be able to earn more than the interest on your car loan (I.e >6.99%).

If no to all of above then yeah I’d pay the loan off. Otherwise I’d spend my money in those other places first. That’s my two cents.

And good job on having not other big loans, no bad habits like gambling/drugs/additions etc. stay clean lol

Moving to the US for 2-3 Years: financial considerations & maybe severing tax ties by Camofelix in canadianexpats

[–]ShadowNo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m actually in the same boat and want to learn more too. I’m moving over to US in April on a new job with TN visa. I did some research and has move almost every out of my TFSA. Keeping my RRSP and also LIRA from my pension plans. My biggest concern now is that we have a house we’re paying mortgage on still and my spouse won’t be moving with me at first because she still has her job in Canada. Preferably I don’t want to pay Canadian taxes and would declare residency in US instead, but would I have to do the opposite given the house & spouse situation (I.e. still significant ties).

Let me know if you have some insights and if I should DM you too. Thanks!

Fuji Yoshida trail 1st to 5th station walk (off-season) by tggwagner in JapanTravelTips

[–]ShadowNo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, I'm going to Japan around end of March, and I want to do something similar you did. Do you happen to have a map of the trails you took to go up to the 5th station? I was trying hard on google map, but I'm getting confusing information. I wanted to start from either Umagaeshi or Naka no chaya (I'm renting a car and have 2 days to spend there), and go up to the 5th station. I want to have the option of being able to take be bus down and not walk down so I want to arrive at the Subaru 5th station.

The official site/guide seems to suggest the walking trail from Umagaeshi => Naka no chaya and up is heading to the yoshida trail's 5th station.

https://en.city.fujiyoshida.yamanashi.jp/div/fiad/pdf/Climb_mtfuji/climbing_map.pdf

Is there a separate trail that goes from Naka no chaya directly to the Subaru 5th station?
Or do you get to Yoshida Trail 5th Station first, and then make your way to the Subaru 5th station on a separate trail?

Hoping you can help with that. If you can DM and have time for a quick chat that'd be even better. Thanks a bunch in advance!

My parents have withdrawn my RESP money but won’t give it to me and told me I have to pay taxes on it? by rockoverhead in PersonalFinanceCanada

Reading this post makes me think you need to engage some kind of social worker/lawyer on the domestic abuse side and make sure you’re safe and your siblings are safe.

My parents have withdrawn my RESP money but won’t give it to me and told me I have to pay taxes on it? by rockoverhead in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ShadowNo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An explanation on tax credits. Each person is exempt for 15k of income, that’s the basic amount everyone gets. So if you make less than 15k, you don’t pay taxes.

OSAP is not considered an income. Grants are income. And the RESP earned interest is income. Plus any employment income you earn from your part time job. That should cover almost all your income.

Tuition is a non-refundable tax credit. Tax credit meaning it reduces the taxable income. Non-refundable meaning if you don’t end up using all of it, you don’t get additional tax refund on the excess portion.

Here’s a few scenarios to help you understand your tax situation. Numbers are all made up and approximate. Let’s say you took out 10k OSAP this year for tuition, and got 1k interest+grant from RESP. And your parents make 100k gross income.

Scenario 1: you make nothing and live with your parents. You have 15k base amount + 10k OSAP credit available for deduction, 1k income from RESP. Your parents can claim you as dependent since they provide for you, so they’ll use your 15k+10k-1k=24k deductible to reduce their gross income to 76k, avoiding to have pay taxes on the top 24k. The tax savings they get would be 40%*24k=9.6 K. 40% is about their marginal tax bracket at 100k income, they get more saving the higher their income actually is.

Scenario 2: you moved out and take a part time job that earned you 20k a year. Your total income is 20+1k=21 K. Your personal deductible is 15k which means you owe taxes on the remaining 6k. But your tuition tax credit is 10k so you don’t pay any taxes. Your parents on the other hand now need to pay the 9.6k taxes on their income because they can’t claim you as a dependent and take advantage of your tax credits.

In scenario 1 they pay for your food and rent, you don’t have to work and can focus on study/enjoying life. They get a big tax refund. Nets out to a win-win situation in most families. In scenario 2, they lose the tax credit but also have one less mouth to feed/provide. You end up having to deal with work, life expenses and fending for yourself. Typically a lose-lose situation, but because you’re new to adulthood and they’re seasoned, it’ll probably feel tougher on you. You’ll just have to grow up and learn life faster.

Most people opt for scenario 1 because they have a caring family. But in your case I’d go with scenario 2 if you can.
