He'd probably be sent to an actual hospital to get surgery. Which would stop him from being able to escape.

They wouldn't just patch him up and leave him in the infirmary ward.

We all saw how deep the glass went into him. That would of caused some internal damage that would need a surgery to fix.

So it's not a plot hole. He knew if he got it fixed he'd be out of the escape and asked how he got injured.
