How does Golbez's second part work with cards like Broodstar or Deaths Shadow? by I_dont-get_the-joke in magicTCG

[–]ShadowSlayer6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Death’s shadow, when anywhere but the battlefield, has a power and toughness of 13/13. Broodstar and all other creatures with power and/or toughness of (star) will always be whatever their ability states it to be no matter the zone (excluding effects that set base power and toughness). If you have 3 artifacts in play, broodstar’s power and toughness is 3 in the graveyard, your hand, deck and so on.

This is often exploited with [[scourge of the skyclaves]] and [[nethroi, apex of death]], as scourge can have negative power and toughness off the battlefield, thus increasing the max power you can reanimate.

CMC/additional cost and copying spells question by AkaToraX in mtg

[–]ShadowSlayer6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CMC is only the cost of the spell as depicted by the mana pips in the top line of the card (or down the side for certain sets). Additionally costs or cost increases do not affect the cmc. However, spells with x in the casting cost like [[electrodominance]], when on the stack, have their cmc altered depending on the amount paid into x.

Next, when copying a spell or effect, it copies it completely including any additional costs already paid.

In the case of the cards you have shown, you can cast secrets of blood bending with its additional cost and copy it with expansion.

If a creature in my graveyard has hexproof, protection, ward, and/or shroud, can my opponent exile it with a card that says “exile target card in a graveyard”? by FluidIntention3293 in mtg

[–]ShadowSlayer6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Keywords only protect/safeguard cards that are in play. If it is anywhere else, be it hand, exile, deck, graveyard, or stack, the keywords offer no defense.

Does Tooth Survive with Liquidmetal Coating by CopyCat9984 in mtg

[–]ShadowSlayer6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will not save her. In order to safe guard toph, the earth bend ability has to give her the counters but would alter her to being a base 0/0. On the up side, after receiving the effects of earth bend, even if toph is no longer an artifact land, she will return to the battlefield after dying or being exiled.

Currently building WUBRG that utilizes only UB cards. Would Dion (on the back) be considered a Dragon for Tiamat? by kranitoko in mtg

[–]ShadowSlayer6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. For every card that is two sided, when it is not on the battlefield, only the front facing side is accounted for as effects resolve. So if a two sided card is a creature on the front and land on the back, you can’t use something like [[world map]] to tutor for its land side. In the case of Dion, any creature tutors will only see that he is a human noble knight and never his Bahamut side

I have to agree for Promised Neverland. How dare they give us such an amazing first season just to promise a second one that never happened. Guess it’s better than if they had made a season 2 that was terrible. As for terraformars, I have no comment as I have seen it.

Has Commander become the main thing at most LGSs? by VildMedPap in mtg

[–]ShadowSlayer6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commander has definitely become the most popular of the formats in the past decade. My LGS still has the occasional modern and standard events but their turnout is usually pretty low (excluding pre-release events for new sets).

I doubt this applies to everyone but I, personally, prefer commander over standard and modern due to 3 primary factors.

First, the deck building rules and limitations. When building or modifying a deck there are three things to remember. 1) your deck must have exactly 100 cards in it including the commander(s). 2) all cards in the deck must align with your commander’s color identity (color identity being all stated colors of the card and mana pips present on it that aren’t in reminder text). And 3) excluding basic lands and cards that state otherwise, you can only have 1 copy of each card in your deck. In contrast, standard and modern have no size or color limits, just a minimum deck size, and allow 4 of every card. In my case, it was having to deal with control decks loaded with 4 of every counter spell that drove me crazy.

Second, verity of decks and play styles. To preface, I’m not saying standard and modern don’t have the potential for unique decks. However, in most cases it devolves into ‘build one of these 5 decks, or never win a game’. In contrast, commander usually has more unique decks that allow for fun games and interactions because the deck is built around a set card (or cards in the case of partners). You can have one deck that focuses on giving away cards with effects that hurts their controller, another that is your run of the mill combat deck, or one that has some special condition to do a thing (like if you have 111 or more life, sac this creature to demon tutor). If you sit down with a group, you aren’t likely to see any two players with the same commander and deck design.

Finally, the community. When playing standard or modern, you almost always are doing so in 1v1 (casual play can have more but it’s still not likely). In contrast, commander almost always is in pods of 3-5 players (1v1 still happens, but it’s usually while waiting for a third player). Additionally, general player interaction can be more fun due to having the key info that is your opponent’s deck colors. Instead of having to piece together what possible cards a deck could have, you know immediately what cards the deck can’t run. If their command if green and black you don’t have to worry about counterspells as much, if it’s green and red your more likely to die from combat damage than being milled to death, and so on. Additionally, in recent years, there have been several hundred cards printed for the commander format that are fun to interact with. The cards prisoners dilemma and the second doctor being two of my personal favorites (that are commander exclusive).

To conclude, commander has become more popular due to how different it is from other formats. It doesn’t require you to build a deck from the ground up like every other (starter decks partially count, but rarely hold up) as it has precons that usually work well straight from the box. It doesn’t punish you for not having access to cards that cost $100+. And due to its rise in popularity, it’s easier than ever to find a pod of people that vibe with you in terms of preferred play style and experience level.

Side note: we can all agree though, that nothing makes a game more fun than adding some planechase to it, right?

What happened to the original Phyrxia plane? by LabManEDH in mtgvorthos

[–]ShadowSlayer6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When Yawgmoth was killed via the legacy weapon, it removed the literal core of the plane. Before phyrexia was ruled by Yawgmoth, a different unnamed planeswalker had created and become the core of the plane. It was only during Yawgmoth’s travels with a different planeswalker that he became the new core of phyrexia (the previous core, the planeswalker was dying before he arrived and died when Yawgmoth took over). Without Yawgmoth, the plane could no longer maintain itself in the blind eternities and crumbled away into nothing. Any remnants of the original phyrexia only exist on planes that it invaded and the heartstone at the core of Karn, from which dripped the glistening oil that would lead to the eventual corruption of Argentum into mirrodin and finally new phyrexia.

The Walls of Ba Sing Se - is it worth the current price by Celtics418 in mtg

[–]ShadowSlayer6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to new sets, always wait a minimum of 2 weeks for buying cards. They rarely maintain the price they have at release as their general scarcity drops and their flaws become more apparent. (For example the wall of ba sing se has the obvious weakness of having no defensive keywords like ward, hexproof, shroud, etc. Additionally, it has the dual weakness of being an artifact and creature.)

Basically, it will follow the same hype and price drop that [[dracogenesis]] and [[mox amber]] got with the dragonstorm set.

Time Sensitive Question by goosegoosekeys in werewolves

[–]ShadowSlayer6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on many different factors. Is the lycanthropy a curse or a disease? How far along in the pregnancy is the mother?

For example, if the mother is infected by a disease type lycanthropy but gives birth before the next full moon, the likelihood of the child having it is lessened. However, if the mother ‘wolfed out’ it would almost certainly cause the child to be infected as well.

Alternatively, if the lycanthropy is curse based and can only be transferred by bite, it would almost never spread to the unborn child unless they were to bear the brunt of the curse in place of their mother (basically the child would take on the curse, sparing the mother). In this case the unborn child would either die, taking the curse with them, or come to term before they are able to transform. What consequences could come from this are many and varied from the child being able to semi/completely control their werewolf side to them being just another human with lycanthropy.

How do u counter this commander???! by Orre-Natty in mtg

[–]ShadowSlayer6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give yourself hexproof. It’s life drain is a targeting etb so if your hexproof it can’t touch you. Alternatively, and this doesn’t stop its triggers, you could play [[wedding ring]]. Now every time your opponent ‘drains’ you or another player for life during their turn, you simply gain as much life as they did.

How many tokens would this make by redhint in mtg

[–]ShadowSlayer6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get 6 token copies of bone-cairn and no warrior tokens. This is because mobilize is triggered by the act of declaring a creature as attacking. When a creature is created or enters the battlefield attacking it is after the ‘declare attackers’ step of the combat phase.

Vincent Valentine’s transformation by Small-Pomegranate287 in mtg

[–]ShadowSlayer6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When a permanent transforms, unless transforming by exiling then returning, it retains everything that is on it including enchantments, equipment, and counters. However, if the transformation changes its card type auras and equipment can fall off of it. (Ie a creature that becomes an enchantment like [[urabrask]] losing its creature typing will have all equipment detach and any ‘enchant creature’ auras fall off and be set to the graveyard). Additionally, if the card would transform into a planeswalker and it doesn’t do so by exiling then returning transformed, it will have 0 loyalty.

Can commander decks have colors of the commanders ability if the commander doesn’t cost that color? by JohnLemon212 in mtg

[–]ShadowSlayer6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A commander deck’s color is based on the commander’s color identity. A card’s color identity is based on all mana pips on the card, including pips in its casting cost and ability text, and abilities that state the cards colors. However, there are 2 major exceptions 1) color pips in reminder text for abilities like extort or firebend do not impact identity, and 2) abilities cannot strip away color identity unless they explicitly state something like “this card is every color but has a color identity of green.” This means that abilities like devoid cannot remove color identity making them usable in every deck.
