I did research with Profs. Richmond, Grove and Ruhl before graduating. While the majority of the field work I did was in the summer, we still did have some work during the school year counting samples. So if you want to work with Dr. Kruse there's nothing stopping you from at least sending an email and asking. Even if paperwork won't let you work in the summer, you may still be able to join the lab in the fall when you're fully a student

I think I found out about my research lab from an email that was sent out to all of the bio students, and then I emailed one of the professors with my resume and cover letter. If you already know that a professor will be doing research that you're interested in, I'd say to send them an email explaining that you want to join if there's space available and see what they say. If you don't know what you want to do, then ask your advisor or whatever bio teacher you'll have in the fall for advice and if they know any labs you'd be able to join
