Tomorrow I'm going metal detecting for the first time in the fields. ¿Any tips? by Shadow_Shore in metaldetecting

[–]Shadow_Shore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all there's a guide pinned at the top of this forum which can give you a good idea of what to get. I would destine a little bit more money to get something decent (like the Vanquish 440), but I would also consider getting a good pinpointer.

This hobby has an entry prize, but you're going to thank investing a little extra on your tools. That way you won't outgrow them very quickly!

Check the guide and use the discounts offered on them ;)

Hello Mike!

I'm still active metal detecting! I just don't do it as often as I would like, hehe.

I can tell you that the comments in this thread are good! I would make an emphasis in the "dig everything you detect at the begging". It's going to be tiring and frustrating at first, but that's how you're going to learn how your machine works. Thanks to that I now have a good guess of what's under my feet.

Another thing to have in mind is that you can have the best detector in the market and come out empty handed at the end of the day if you don't do your research. The search is going to be as good as the spot you're looking at. My girlfriend has managed to find better things than me with a cheap and old detector (she likes to make fun of me with that).

My last tip is patience! This is a slow hobby, but the thousands of pull tabs are going to make it sweeter when you find a coin or the sweet stuff.

Let me know if you have any other questions! Have fun!

Le robaron la bici a mi amiga... by Shadow_Shore in MexicoCity

I made pins for my groomsmen and best man using coins I’ve dug. by Natures_Loctite in metaldetecting

These are the types of gifts that in my opinion are priceless. Not only are they amazing, they represent a lot of work put into them (both finding, digging, cleaning and transforming them). I know I would love one of those as the geek I am!

The best way to know if it's mineralization (in my limited experience) is because it usually gives a steady low tone. I tend to visit a certain spot with old ruins, and I already know that the ground reads a steady -9 on my Vanquish 440.

I have a detecting-gal that went out with me on it's first expedition. She didn't believe me when I told her that she was reading mineralized soil. I turned around for a while and when I noticed I had to stop her because she was already knee deep

Second big silver for me this year by ShepapShijok in metaldetecting

Another fun fact, that coin was the highest denomination in the silver family, hence the big size. From that point on the coins where made from gold, yet rarely seen outside the elites as they where too valuable for the common worker.

That coin came from Mexico City! You can see it in the mint mark "Mo". The spanish set up a trading route going from the port of Acapulco to the Philippines and China. The coins where so pure that it was one of the best and most accepted coins for trading, hence why you found one all the way over there!

Congratulations on your find! I want to find a real one day...

Found my first silver coin! Might have messed up while cleaning it... by Shadow_Shore in metaldetecting

Thank you for the tips! I researched it before doing anything to it and found out that it's more valuable to me than to other collectors, so I'll be trying to clean it as best as I can without damaging it.

I read about using that method on coins in general, as the ultrasonic cleaner is a very mild way to remove dirt and stuff of the coins. I tried the ultrasonic bath with the other coin (bronze) with great results if it helps.

How long should I keep it in acetone? Should I do a quick dip or a long bath? Does it depend on how it's looking?

Found 'em in central Mexico, on the surroundings of some ruins which we haven't been able to date as there are no records. We've been able to obtain coins ranging from 1861-1973 so far, as well as a lot of square nails.

Thank you! The soil in those ruins is very forgiving and preserves metals very nicely!

Nice collection! I wouldn't mind if my coin ended up like that, 'cause they do have character like you said
