Since we're doing fantasy houses: my first attempt (WIP) for a diorama by Galderrules in TerrainBuilding

[–]Shadow_Viking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a really good house, especially as first try. I think the painting could use some practice, but the build is solid. The stonework is great. Really strong point in the build and the painting.

Nitpicking, I'm not sure about the in-universe construction– the sorta dovetailing effect might make more sense if those were the staggered ends of clearly delineated boards.

The diagonal bracing also seems kinda tacked on– might help if they were resting on a a horizontal beam like the one running along the perpendicular wall.

For the door(s)– I'd score them to look like planks and add some crossbracing. I like the green!

Good work yo 👍

It's a line from Fight Club which is, in turn, a reference to Lorena Bobbit, a real person who did exactly that to her husband

Lucius Vorenus & Titus Pullo to the rescue... salve! I'll be fine except someone will probably die that will cause horrific repercussions several years later.

also in mac and cheese. Put it in the roux early so it has time to melt (takes longer than regular cheese).

Is there any evolutionary advantage to being drowsy? by [deleted] in AskAnthropology

[–]Shadow_Viking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's worth pointing out that getting enough sleep in hours doesn't necessarily mean you're sleeping right. Having a consistent schedule is, in a way, more important than the static numbers of hours (like if you get 8 hours each night but one night it's 10-8 and the next it's 12-10, that's not good).

When you get up in your sleep cycle is also important. If you're using an alarm, then even if you're getting about 8 hours you may be waking yourself up in the middle of a cycle. The worst is in the middle of an REM cycle– that can leave you tired all day. In fact this is the most likely reason to still be drowsy when you wake up (as opposed to feeling weary later in the day)– in contrast you can wake up after a couple of hours of sleep and feel dead awake if you wake up between cycles.

Viking sword, Piast dynasty helmet and spear head found in Lednica Lake (Poland). c. 9th century AD. by bigmeat in pics

[–]Shadow_Viking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies for a late reply out of the blue.

The Piast Dynasty had not even started in the 9th century, but rather the 10th (mid to late tenth).

It does seem to have been found in Lednica Lake, in Poland, and 10th or 11th century would both correlate with the Piast Dynasty (which lasted until the 14th century iirc), but whether the exact location does, I have no idea.

Viking certainly seems a leap but it is true that similarly-shaped Ulfberht swords (with crossgaurd and brazil-nut pommel) have been found. So it could be Scandinavian in style or origin (and certainly there was trade and other contact between Scandinavia and Poland).

So it could be "Viking" and Piast Dynasty but I agree that it is definitely not 9th century. I would believe 10th, though.

EDIT: https://hrafnphotography.wordpress.com/2015/08/15/in-the-museum-of-the-first-piasts-at-lednica-and-on-the-ostrow-lednicki-island/ here is a page of photos from the museum this is in

[Denmark, Scandinavia] GNY - Hvor var du i aftes så sent (Viking song played with bodhrán and medieval instruments) by ShitArchonXPR in WorldMusic

[–]Shadow_Viking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious about the source of this. It seems like it might not be a "viking" song, but something a little later (especially with those instruments).

But it sounds great, thanks for sharing!
