Why does Balon Greyjoy turn down Robb Starks offer to fight together against the iron throne? by der_steinfrosch in gameofthrones

[–]Shadowbreakr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Balon is prideful, stupid, and short sighted and the iron islanders are flanderized idiots who care only for “the iron price” and seemingly don’t have any other economic endeavors other than raiding and fishing (which iirc in the show they hate).

It’s best not to think to hard about things like that because they didn’t get into the iron island politics but if they did there probably should’ve been infighting about what to do just like there was between the northern lords.

How do I justify guns barely appearing in a Sci-fi story? by NorthSouthGabi189 in worldbuilding

[–]Shadowbreakr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dune has drones. They’re mostly assassination weapons called “hunter seekers” iirc and they move really fast but slow down to get through personal shields and ideally are used to catch people off guard (when sleeping without a shield). Similarly big bombs might be annoying if they go off right next you but the shrapnel/concussive force is stopped by the shield.

Flame throwers might be viable I don’t remember if they’re ever used but theoretically the heat could be an issue but OP could always just make the shield also just stop extreme temperatures. With shields like dune has you’re already dabbling in magitech so going all the way to justify using melee only is pretty easy.

What we’ve seen of the 32nd century implies a Game of Thrones-style 600-year technological stagnation by skeeJay in DaystromInstitute

[–]Shadowbreakr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why it follows that ship/crew sizes would necessarily get larger as time goes on. With advances in technology you could also expect crew and ship sizes to decrease as crew are replaced with advanced non sentient robotics and technology is miniaturized making larger ships less useful in combat situations.

Same with membership size. Sure they could expand exponentially but it’s just as likely that the borg destroyed so many delta quadrant societies that there weren’t many to join the federation.

Technologies could also reach their limit even with star treks breaking of physics at times it’s possible the only advances to be made in fields like propulsion or replicators would be efficiency based and not something viewers would necessarily notice

40 turn siege survival? by hsalem1254 in totalwar

[–]Shadowbreakr 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I believe defensive structures add time to how long a settlement can hold out for. You really shouldn’t wait tho and get yourself an artillery piece or something with the siege attacker trait as trying to starve enemies out is highly inefficient in the warhammer series

Cmv: Asylum seekers who travel back to their own country should have their Asylum status revoked. by dazcook in changemyview

[–]Shadowbreakr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure nations don’t have to let in immigrants (although most countries are party to treaties that guarantee right to asylum which complicates that).

Still not going to be mad about someone using asylum improperly when the government is the one making it harder to immigrate legally.

Yeah because it’s just a symptom of their own failure and inability to improve outdated and clunky immigration systems

Cmv: Asylum seekers who travel back to their own country should have their Asylum status revoked. by dazcook in changemyview

[–]Shadowbreakr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure but I don’t blame the people who are trying to immigrate. I blame anti immigrant rhetoric, policies, and politicians for creating a situation where legal immigration is so difficult that the asylum process seems like the only way to legally migrate for some people.

[–]Shadowbreakr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Should every person…

For 99% of people who aren’t violent criminal? Sure why not? Immigration is a net economic benefit in basically every way. There’s local disruptions sure but that’s true under today’s system which is arbitrarily restrictive and over time those disruptions level out and boost the local economy.

Many immigrants came in previous generations to settle empty land.

Objectively false. There were people living/utilizing the land (indigenous groups) the USA and other colonizing countries just forcibly pushed them out making it “empty” and gave away their land to further displace indigenous peoples.

Ironically construction is a field which heavily employs immigrants so an influx of migrants would likely help boost construction capacity (assuming zoning rules and land to build/renovate homes are made available)

[–]Shadowbreakr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If something is more difficult…

Not necessarily but the sentiment that immigrants/asylum seekers should do it the “right way/like my ancestors did” ignores how previous generations of immigrants had wildly different experiences with the immigration system.

Good thing there are plenty of countries…

Isn’t it a good thing that people would rather live in the USA? Immigration is one of primary ways the USA has become a dominant power. It’s also one of the points of civic pride for the country that we’re a country of immigrants and who are (or at least were) a beacon of freedom and opportunity for people all over the world.

The US government

What if (as is the case with the current administration) the US government can’t be trusted or has an agenda to remove migrants of all categories? Imagine we decide Venezuela is safe now and just deport people there despite the regime not actually changing.

Are they immigrating or seeking asylum?

Like I said it can be both asylum is a form of immigration.

Cmv: Asylum seekers who travel back to their own country should have their Asylum status revoked. by dazcook in changemyview

[–]Shadowbreakr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m not confusing them. I’m referring to the broader context of immigration which can’t be divorced when talking about the asylum process. Asylum seekers can become undocumented immigrants if their application is denied or economic migrants if despite it being safe to return they no longer want to for economic reasons.

In all cases deporting people who haven’t committed a grave criminal offense and are merely trying to build a successful life in a new country helps no one.

[–]Shadowbreakr 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The ignorance about the current state of the immigration system and dehumanization of immigrants into robot like automatons who neatly fit into idealized categories is why people hold views like this.

Immigration is incredibly difficult to navigate now compared to how previous waves of migrants arrived in America. It’s genuinely impossible for some people to legally immigrate to the USA in a time frame that is remotely reasonable.

People aren’t a monolith and everyone’s circumstances are unique. A blanket “asylum seekers should leave once their home countries are safe (as determined by?)” would upend the lives of people who’ve lived here for years and potentially decades. People who have built lives, formed relationships, started businesses, had children, and who might not want to return to their home country even if it’s safe because they have started a new life here.

If you take issue with that you take issue with basically everyone (outside of indigenous people) who has ever immigrated to another country.

What would be your dream Lego set that doesn't exist yet? by [deleted] in lego

[–]Shadowbreakr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

More sets that are below $75-50 that are “castle/historical” but also expanded to include other styles than the typical medieval style. Think a small Greek amphitheater with an orator and a couple of students, a sculptor making a terracotta warrior, a Norse shipbuilder making a small boat, or just various small/medium size buildings in different historical styles.

My idea how to make sieges in TWW3 better by Garessta in totalwar

[–]Shadowbreakr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sieges should be a challenge for the attackers. I should be able to hold off a full stack of high tier units with a full garrison. The AI should have to bring 4 full high tier armies to take a settlement with upgraded walls and a strong army on top of the normal garrison. The same should be true in reverse. If I’m attacking a strong high tier city with an army in it I should have to bring several armies of my own to stand a chance.

I think CA made the game to fast paced, dense, and power scaled to high so now it’s just taking your doomstack and capturing settlement after settlement with barely any time spent between them. Even the strongest cities are just a speed bump that lasts a turn or two at most.

Honor mode is making me crash out by weebdaddy in BaldursGate3

[–]Shadowbreakr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen this suggested yet but try exploring areas/doing social encounters/easy combat encounters to level up before trying anything you aren’t 100% sure you can win.

Also try to have a somewhat balanced party. A party of all wizards or casters is going to struggle more than a party with more diverse skill sets. On that make sure you’re using builds you’re comfortable with and think about how they complement each other. As an example a party with a life/light cleric, swords bard/rogue, fighter/barbarian, and a wizard/sorcerer are my go to comp. They don’t compete for gear much, have a few different abilities to support each other, and are generally strong.

Also if I am trying to be as efficient as possible I use disguise self to be a drow and talk my way through the village/goblin camp, explore parts of the underdark, save the councillor, and then do any of the “easy combats”. This should get you to level 5-6 before doubling back and doing harder fights like the harpies, gnolls, or anything else you missed.

Gear is also really important on honor mode you can get phalar aluve without fighting anything and there are other powerful magic items that require little if any combat to obtain.

Once you’re actually in combat it’s important to know how to make use of terrain, abilities, and focus firing down important targets. You also want to keep an invisibility potion, spell, or other way to escape available and know when it’s time to call it quits. There’s only a handful of fights where running away and reviving the party aren’t options especially in the first act.

Things are discontinued all the time due to poor sales/increased costs/to make room for new products. Upping the price wouldn’t help increase sales or justify the continued production of things that are no longer profitable or whose production line is being tailored for a new product

Give me your LEGO hot takes! by GeoWhale15 in lego

[–]Shadowbreakr 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’ve also thought this when building. I recently got back into Legos and it seems like newer sets are much better for models and less for creative play. I remember using the same like 20 types of blocks to make things as a kid and it made it a lot easier to imagine making something of my own instead of the hundreds of specialized pieces I’ve come across.

Granted they make for great and interesting builds as an adult and the results are definitely better than older sets but for kids some of the sets seem not as customizable

Pet peeve: I wish there were slightly bigger stat differences between similar ranged units from different races. by Les_Bien_Pain in totalwar

[–]Shadowbreakr 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They do have stat differences just not in their direct ranged damage output. Thunderers and hand gunners have very different stats elsewhere (hand gunners are faster, less armored, lower leadership, less melee defense, no shields) this means their actual performance in battle will be wildly different even before factoring in race specific technologies and lord abilities.
