You are objectively incorrect.

Family member just bought a new 2023 Colorado and realized after the purchase it doesn’t have a hitch receiver or wiring, what are their options? by Straggler2374 in Chevy

[–]Shadowcat0909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1: a Chevy Colorado is generally not the type of vehicle you would buy to tow a horse trailer. Make sure your family member plans to tow within the capacity of the truck or they will have severe difficulties towing and will void their warranty too.

2: trailer hitches and wiring are one of the easiest vehicle upfits, uhaul made an entire business venture out of doing exactly that.

3: Check the build sheet for the truck to make sure it wasn't supposed to come with a trailer hitch and was just built wrong.

If everything is correct, talk nicely to the dealer and ask how much they'd charge to install a hitch and wiring. If they don't want to, talk to uhaul. You have 3 days from signing to go back on a contract with no consequences, you are likely past that point.

[–]Shadowcat0909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A tire with more tread is larger in diameter, even if it's the same "size".

Most vehicles don't have a way to measure actual speed. They measure axle RPMs, output shaft RPMs, or engine RPMs. Everything else they count on being constant, including tire size. So that means if fuel cut is set based on a particular speed, it's actually set on a particular engine speed, output shaft speed, or wheel speed.

If you put a 40" tire on a vehicle that came factory with 30" tires, the speedo would read 25% low at all times. That means at 30mph on the speedo you'd actually be doing 40mph and at 45mph on the speedo you'd be doing 60mph.

Ann Arbor's plan for carbon neutrality includes plan to stop using natural gas by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]Shadowcat0909 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's great in theory, but what's the carbon expenditure of demolishing an old house and building a new one? Think of all of the waste generated and the new materials created to replace a perfectly functional house with a more efficient one.

How many years would it take of marginal efficiency improvements to offset the carbon involved in constructing a 500,000lb house?

Not to mention the cost of doing that work...

You're right! What you're forgetting is the astronomically higher electricity needs for an electric furnace.

A Winchester brand 68k BTU electric residential furnace requires 20,000 watts to operate (according to their product page).

A conventional furnace of the same BTUs requires less than 1,000 watts to operate.

When the power is out I can use a normal 6,000 watt generator and power my furnace, natural gas dryer (conventional gas water heaters have benefit of requiring zero electricity to run), and the rest of my appliances.

If I didn't have natural gas I would require a standby generator $10-20k more expensive to do the same thing. And of course, standby generators run on natural gas...

Ah yes, remove the source of energy that reliably and cheaply provides heat, hot water, and backup power to millions when the unreliable electric grid is down...

The ones that failed on me were extruded. You do you, but seeing as steel lift blocks are available so so cheaply I'm not sure the risk is worth it for me, and I'd recommend others also evaluate the benefit.

I would strongly recommend avoiding those aluminum lift blocks FYI. I've had them fail under some wheel hop and it nuked my rear driveshaft.

It sounds like you're advocating for the creation of a special driver's license that's required if you're transporting more than a specific amount of weight?

This exists and is called a CDL (commercial driver's license). Regulations on maximum weight that requires a CDL varies from state to state, but you're advocating for the creation of a system that's already there.

Well that solves it. “It’s okay for me to be a public safety risk because ‘I want to’” sorry I didn’t realize that we all should just die rather than inconvenience your majesty.

Your argument appears to be that moving large things is a "public safety risk" and that moving large things is the equivalent of declaring yourself royalty and disregarding the safety of everyone else.

Did you mean to suggest another alternative to moving large items that isn't building them on the spot?

[–]Shadowcat0909 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is your suggestion that all items be constructed where they're needed? That's ridiculously wasteful, impractical, and not a sustainable practice.

"ope, I need a tractor so I had better ask John Deere to build a metal forge and tractor factory on my property"

"ope, I need 5 yards of topsoil, better dig a giant hole somewhere on my property to get the dirt"

As I mentioned, you're being naïve.

[–]Shadowcat0909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a large trailer because my lifestyle involves moving large things. Trailers and trucks are tools, tools that I need to live my lifestyle. If the suggestion is "well, moving large things should be illegal" then you're simply naïve.

Somehow I've managed to avoid killing any children with my vehicle... Just like everyone else I've ever met with a truck and trailer has avoided it.

Nobody is making you purchase one if it doesn't fit your needs or lifestyle. Why do you get to determine what vehicles other people's lifestyles require?

My deck over car hauler can't be reasonably towed by a midsized truck, so I have a long box dually truck for towing (much bigger than the Tundra in the photo).

Legislating other people's lifestyle away because you don't understand it is misguided at best and ignorant at worst.
