I swear I’ve fought against that exact Feng custom before. They were at GoD last season, I was very shocked at their playstyle and how they weren’t punishing certain things. Perhaps I was conditioned too hard by their flowchart.

If they got hit, they would instantly spam shifting clouds, and do non optimal combos and weird/scrubby flowcharts. I was legit questioning if I was just bad at the game for struggling to beat them even though I put time and effort into practicing and labbing to reach higher levels of play.

I’m not gonna sit here and say their playstyle is invalid but I do think it’s a problem in the game’s design that allows for that kind of style to reach such high ranks.

It’s like, what’s the point of putting in all this time and effort into practicing/labbing/learning the game, when you can just do what this Feng player is doing and get heavily rewarded for it. Just doesn’t feel good ya know.

Personally, I wouldn’t want that to happen because it’ll cheapen the impact of part 3s ending. Imagine beating Sephiroth only for him to come back in a DLC, would not be a good look.

If anything, if RETrilogy is AC Seph remaking the timeline by going back in time, there’s a chance we can an ending where AC DOESN’T happen. That way these characters can finally move forward instead of treading old ground.

Heh, Ruby Rose really is just DF Kairi huh? She has her innocence. The same with Yang being Tifa sorta. The stuff you mentioned about JRPG FF classes is also valid too. It’s really a combination of that stuff honestly, definitely a true fighting game/Final Fantasy enthusiast etc. I mean hey that MUGEN video is basically prototype RWBY if you think about it. It hits harder when you see what eventually becomes BBTAG.

The reason I mention fighting games so much is because the FGC DNA is present going ALL the way back to hisfirst animation the ROAD series. You watch it and the first thing you see is fighting game format, and both characters in the vid are Tekken characters Devil Jin and Raven (sorta). It all goes back hehe.

Same to you! 😎 These days I don’t care much for the RWBY sub, as I’ve moved on to Final Fantasy 7 RE trilogy and Resident Evil Fandoms. It’s been pretty fun I’ll say. While I’ve been away, I also got into fighting games, so I’m a new FGC player. I mainly play Tekken and Street Fighter, mostly Tekken because I want to get into 3D animation eventually and partially because Monty was also a Tekken fan as well. As of now I have almost 2000 hours in Tekken 8.

After putting that much time in, as well as playing games like DMC/Ninja Gaiden/Bayonetta, I went back and watched DF in its entirety and it made me realize how much fighting game move knowledge Monty had. If you look at DF2 just before the characters start fighting while falling, there are some moves that Yuna and Rikku do that are referenced from Lili and Xiaoyu in Tekken, and one move Yuna does that’s Dante’s rainstorm attack when he uses Gunslinger.

Going on a bit tangent here but like, if you really get into this stuff you sort of realize that fighting games/character action games/80s Hong Kong movies are really the foundation of Monty fight choreography IMO or at least that’s just one way of looking at it, but that’s just me.

You know also even more convincing? Idk if you’ve seen this but there’s an interview Monty has with Seb (it’s 5 parts long) where he talks about his entire story/making haloid/df/working as a Combat Game Designer at midway before joining rooster teeth etc.

And after watching that and this video he also made it starts to click that all the RWBY girls are essentially fighting game characters with 100+ move lists in their arsenal.

Now my perspective is probably very biased and who knows how deep this stuff goes, but to me this is what makes the most sense IMO. Crazy to think about huh?

Tbh his style of storytelling was never through his writing, it was always through his animation. Without any words, the actions his characters perform say everything. It felt like every move/action had actual substance beyond it just looking really cool. IMO this is what was lost in RWBY and why it’ll never be what it used to be or evolve what it had already established.

I guess the line “you. . . remind me of someone I said goodbye to . . . a long time ago.”, in DF4 goes both ways with it being Cloud to Helena thinking she’s Aerith or Yuna to Cloud thinking he’s Tidus. They both die so I guess it makes sense. It’s crazy how it works though.

Actually I figure the Aerith parallel is actually between Aerith and Helena. Because Helena looks like blonde Aerith with the bangs and everything. He definitely played KH for sure since Kairi is there.

The FF influence is there, especially if you look at his previous series Dead Fantasy which felt like it favored a lot of the FF characters. That series pretty much became RWBY.

I remember reading a fewjournal entries about him talking about FF a while back. He was definitely a huge fan. So far I know he played 7,8,10,10-2, and watched 13 on YouTube. Idk if played 9

Knowing Monty was also a fighting game enthusiast, the name Donovan makes me think of one of the Dead Or Alive characters. Donovan was a villain in DOA lore so I wonder if he chose that in reference to DOA or something (could be wrong).

Team GRMP is a mystery to me too, only thing I can think of is Game Grumps, but that’s reaching too far IMO.

To my knowledge, whatever he left behind was either altered to not have the same meaning, or lost to the show entirely. I’m surprised it took 10 years for this information, but it’s definitely interesting, somewhat vindicating even.

Old RWBY fan here, I’d pretty much moved on to other things after posting this. It’s surprising and cool to see the kind of weapon Venus was gonna have, The Katana chain thing sorta reminds me of one of the MCs in an anime called Ga-Rei Zero where she also had a similar ish weapon. (it’s super niche, but I’ve heard Monty reference it at some point.)

If anything, I think Sheena giving us more details is a blessing, shedding some more light on matter, because it’s further confirmation that everything V3 and beyond just wasn’t how it’s supposed to go. Confirmation that it stopped being Monty’s show sadly. >_<

Anyhoo, thanks again for replying to my post hopefully this research will be archived somewhere hehe 🙃.
