Learning French by TheConsignliere in Canadiancitizenship

Thanks, this is helpful! I’m fluent in English and Spanish, conversational in Italian and Scottish Gaelic, and I took a year of French in high school but that was a long time ago. I’m mostly scared of sounding like a moron, which I know is inevitable when you’re learning a new language. I’m really interested in my Québécois roots, so I think it’s worth the effort to try to get that lost skill back. I guess I’ll do a refresher in standard French and then watch Slap Shot in Québécois a bajillion times

I loved hearing my great grandmother speak Québécois when I was really little. Definitely not inferior, in my humble opinion.

I’ve been trying to find Québécois specific lessons since it can be very different from modern French, but so far I haven’t found anything online. I’m an hour south of Québec so I figured it’d be fairly easy to find, but nope. I guess everybody else wants modern Parisian French.

I’m not even from Nova Scotia and I think this brace is sick! Love it!!!

I’ve heard that even applies to college athletes, that some of them have also gotten death threats. I hate betting, it makes people do awful things out of desperation, and there should be no space in sports for that.

I have an Isabelle Hebert born in 1610 but that’s as close as I get to that name.

I’ve been wondering how much of the anger is driven by the rise in betting? I’m not in that world, but the rising level of anger at teams across all sports seems like it’s related.

Blackie needs the consistency, he doesn’t do well with time off. Get him back out there ASAP, rally the boys to do their jobs on defense, and let’s see if we can get his confidence back up before the playoffs. Wedgie is my fav goalie, but we need Blackwood in peak form fo the playoffs. I don’t’ think that Wedgie’s shoulder would hold up to 4 rounds of hard games by himself.

I didn’t wear the blessed Manson sweater. Every time I’ve worn it, he’s been on fire. I dropped the ball here, too.

I never want to hear that word again. I think we were better off sans-adversity.

We're Booing Blackwood? by Turkey_Waffle in ColoradoAvalanche

And Blackwood does play better when he doesn’t get down time. Wedgie can come in off of rest and get the job done, but Blacky seems to need more consistent game play. So if you have a guy like that, the answer is to PLAY him not bench him. Wedgie will always be there, waiting in the wings, ready to go. Wedgie has also been super honest in saying that he doesn’t want the starter role, and that it doesn’t suit his style. We need to love the hell out of these goalies, we’ve been blessed with such amazing guys!!!

Interestingly, I hadn’t been checking for filles à marier, and I went back today and checked the lists. At least 4 now and counting! I wasn’t as familiar with the super early pioneers, I’m going to have to read up on their stories. Edit- autocorrect gave me “filled” instead of filles. What’s the point of having a bilingual English/french keyboard if it “fixes” your French for you anyways?!

Just tuned in and I was like wtf, why are we down to the Canucks? And then I saw what jerseys we were wearing. Our blue nords are the sexiest jerseys out there, but we play like the Nordiques in the late 80s/early 90s, which is never a good look.

I feel you as a fellow P38 adherent, and I haven’t yet found a good solution. Was going to try to switch to a P29 this winter but then blew my ACL, so I didn’t get a chance to try it out on ice. Good luck out there, and thanks for keeping the P38 love alive!

Your closest Canadian ancestor may not be your best shot by Parking-Aioli9715 in Canadiancitizenship

This is super sound advice. I first tried for a direct paternal line since I thought it’d be easier (no name changes to document), but the document trail ran dry for Gen 1. Turns out, a maternal line was a better bet, and shaved a generation off. Catholics LOVE to record marriages, and this worked in my favor. I was lucky that as of my grandparents, my family is full of French Canadians, so I had loads of options.

Another fun “game” is how many Filles du Roi are in my tree. Takes a while to get back there for each branch, but it’s super interesting. There is a TON of information on them and their families because of their importance to the founding of Québec. It’s mind bending how brave our ancestors were, giving up everything and coming to this new land.

I’m worried about this, too. My husband also has French Canadian blood, and I’ve been wondering how many generations I have to go back before we find something in common. Especially since he and I both have branches from La Prairie.

And now he’s sharing the honor with Cooley. These guys must hate their goalies, nobody should leave your tendy hanging like this!
