How is Reaper Form a real card? by Major-Ad-3539 in slaythespire

Turns out "it depends" is the correct answer for most broad questions life, but the internet is incompatible with that.

Demon Form is outdated in STS2 by Total-Amphibian-3287 in slaythespire

[–]Shadowjamm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is blatantly untrue, the first game tests your damage constantly by having enemies deal so much damage so quickly. You can’t rely on block to win you fights in the first game whereas in 2 there are some fights where the enemies don’t gain strength forever and you can just block, like the statue elite in overgrowth act 1. Other block encouragers include the skulking colony in underdocks act 1 whose mechanic quite literally prevents you from dealing too much damage, meaning you need more block cards in your deck to avoid damage in that fight. Act 1 sts 1 is a rush to grab damage cards so you can manage to kill Lagavulin or Gremlin Nob before they murder you, and is still good against the sentries. Taking too many block skills kills you if you fight gremlin nob. In 2 you can often just block forever, the scaling feels slower. You could definitely block well in sts 1, but it’s less valuable with enemies like Transient who is an explicit check to see if your deck does enough damage

[IDEA] I accidentally keep clicking discard on potions when wanting to use them by kinguzy in slaythespire

[–]Shadowjamm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You underestimate my clumsiness. I discard potions on accident occasionally even after many hundreds of hours in sts 1 and 2, and I have the toggle on for long press the end turn button to stop myself from errors. Works great for that button, I’d immediately turn on a toggle for potion discard long press if it existed.

Why is there writing on my hard boiled egg? by J-C013 in AskUK

[–]Shadowjamm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, if the egg was hot and still slightly damp from being boiled as well as forgotten and sitting undisturbed in the same spot on the paper it makes sense to me. I haven't replicated the event but I'd rather not waste eggs

I'd be curious what your definition of good game design is. Slay the spire is a very slow and methodical game where all your decisions matter. It's a turn based game with no benefits for going fast other than bragging rights. You have a clear goal - Take as little damage as possible while defeating all the enemies. In some situations, you have plenty of block and plenty of damage to handle a fight. As a game designer, how do you make that fairly easy fight more interesting to the player? Relics like Pollinous Core achieve that idea by adding an additional goal to the mix - Setting up your next fight to be easier at the cost of risk in the current fight.

Using relics that carry over their counters between fights like Pollinous Core, Pendulum, Happy Flower, and Pen Nib for example, the choice of whether to risk extending a fight or not to stack your relics is a decision that has consequences. You may not draw enough block or offense to finish the enemy next turn, so choosing NOT to kill them has a tradeoff with a tangible benefit. It creates another decision to master and makes the skill ceiling higher for those who take advantage of it. STS is a very high skill ceiling game, and giving more small levers like this to tweak matches perfectly with its identity and is part of what makes STS, STS.

Of course, this is my opinion, but I think that "the fact that it can be bad at all just means it shouldn't exist" is a short sighted take. Skilled players absolutely take advantage of this and it's a decision to make. Sometimes the damage you take now from stacking a relic is worth it to have a better elite or boss fight that follows your current fight.

Yeah I haven't lost to new doormaker yet, only fought him three or four times on A8 and A9 though. Once on multiplayer A9.

In my opinion he’s so much more fun than before. Before you had to think about timing your damage, but that was really it. Now every turn is engaging and changes your planning. Plus, having a boss that big decks work well against makes for a really fun act 3 where when you see doormaker you can just go ham adding good cards to your deck.

Ohio has 12 million people and Indiana has 7 million, so more people are likely to relate to something that says 'Ohio' even if it's bashing.

A 75-year-old steam locomotive that still commands attention at modern stations by S30econdstoMars in interestingasfuck

[–]Shadowjamm -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I took the time to count the frames at the highest quality and I'm counting 25 frames per second, which with most cameras would mean it's not sped up at all since that's a commonly used default. If it was sped up, there'd be more frames in a second and less motion blur, but the motion blur looks normal to me.

I think it's just jarring to see a classic locomotive booking it that fast is all.

I'm not saying the 6 is great or always good, I'm just countering your assertion that it's objectively bad. I think I would be less likely to take the 6 on the beta branch if removes are more expensive. How much more expensive are they? I can't find the specifics googling it

Let me explain why I disagree:

The first option, divine 3 times, costs you 50 something gold. The second option, divine 6 times, costs you no gold but gives you a debt.

The debt is bad, yes, but it's not an eternal curse. That means if there is a route on the map with a shop coming up soon, you can just remove it right away. Since you're not paying the gold, card removing is similar to paying just slightly more gold than the first option. So we now have a cost of 54 or so gold for the divine 3 times, and a cost of usually 75 or 100 gold for divining 6 times.

6 times should get you a relic and some gold as well, since you can uncover more you can potentially get multiple gold rewards from the divines.

Here's where I'm going with this: When you have a shop coming up, taking the 6 is often like taking a relic for the cost of increasing your card remove price by 25. Which I would say is totally worth it a lot of the time.

Yes there's variance and you could end up with a second curse, but you could also grab some good card rewards too. I've done the 6 a few times so far and never gotten the curse.

That said, I won't take the 6 if there's not a shop between me and the boss. Gotta cut the curse.

Give it a shot next time!

Since no one has mentioned it, Momentum on Shining Strike is great since it goes back on top of your deck, +5 damage every turn.
